DT has historically been one of our strengths. We will have to get after it next class hard and hope we can stay healthy this year. Copeland hurt quite a bit.

And why don't we all get to date the Victoria's Secret models? Sometimes, we have to settle for the lingerie models in the Sears catalog.

I agree 1000%. There is NO excuse for not being able to at LEAST get Chuck Smith on board. He would have solidified a couple recruits we lost. He is engaging and good at what he does. I think Crump is a wasted scholarship IMO. His offers were from some weak A$$ programs.

Brown is a JUCO also.

This won't hurt this year, but in 3 years we won't have many upperclassmen there.

So next year we get 3-4, but they will need to play early.

we definately needed some dt commits. it is easier to take a chance on a lower ranked skill player than a d lineman in my opinion though.

Exactly. If a DT doesn't pan out, isn't good enough to start, not versatile enough to try on OL, where else can he play? If a LB or DB isn't good enough to start, maybe at least they can contribute on special teams.

The Vols are currently 8 on Rivals and USC just rocketed to 5th. Sapp and Crump might fit into the Wilcox model.
Looking at the top classes on Rivals most everyone in the top ten has all of their commitments signed to LOIs. USC only has two in their class signed according to Rivals. Are these kids waiting to see how the NCAA is going to rule? And could we conceivably pull any of them after NSD if the NCAA comes down hard on USC?

If you want to go this route with your analogy, I would say Crump is a model for the big and tall section. No attraction at all. I hope like heck I am wrong on this one.

We are goin to be running a 3-4 defense.. meaning we really only need 1 DT at the time on the field. We have 4 to 5 DTs on roster not including if we get John Brown still.

While you are technically correct and we only need 1 NT, I wonder if you realize how a 3-4 defense really works. We don't exactly have the personnel for it.

That's been my thought also, which gets consistently shot down by the numerous unemployed defensive coordinators on this forum. True, quality DT are hard to find. Speed is the name of the game now, and IMO, the 3-4 is only going to gain in prominence.

I read that Wilcox mainly ran the 4-3 and some 4-2-5 defenses at Boise St. Why does everyone think we will be switching to a 3-4?

We don't have a defensive coordinator either. IMO that's no excuse. It's a hindrance, but if you are taking guys like Crump and Sapp -- surely there's an under-recruited 3 star DT out there more deserving of a scholarship.

absolutely agree!

Boise St guy and Chuck Smith will probably be announced in the next few days I'm guessing. Just a feeling, no sources.

On the way to work this morning, guys on rivals radio, sirius channel sportcentral, said that Wilcox looked like a done deal to be Tenn DC. No mention of Chuck Smith. They did a whole segment on how great of a hire it was.

We didn't exactly kill it at LB either today.

NSD is over. I'm going to lunch now and plan on working the rest of the day.

Kiffin wiffed on Rubio, so he's busy forwarding the paperwork himself.

The athletic department is out of money, as you know.

The 3-4 utilizes one huge NT and two larger DE that could conceivably play UT in a 4-3 scheme. You aren't getting around the need for big interior Dlinemen by going to the 3-4.

I'm going to laugh in your face when Crump is the next Al Wilson or something.

I'm big enough to admit when I am wrong and I truly hope I am on Crump. But for NO SEC school to be recruiting him...and NO ACC school...and NO OTHER MAJOR DIVISION 1 schools....that says SOMETHING doesn't it? Can they ALL be wrong? Maybe...
