Interesting stat on CJH

You realize he’s had 10 less scholarships his first two years, don’t you?

I see people cry “he’s gotta get in the portal more”. Hell, I’m sure he would have if he’d had more scholarships. 10 less is a pretty significant number.
Yeah I realize that. It. Also supports him inheriting a bad roster. Why are you so defensive when I was agreeing he inherited a bad roster. He significantly put preformed in year 2.

He's been in the portal and has done some good things. 1 of the 2 five stars on the team came out of the portal. Between the portal and recruiting classes we will need to make ground on Bama, UGA, LSU, Florida, and now Texas and Oklahoma if we want to have consistent results.

I hear nothing in this interview to make me think CJH has lost any control or anything else, other than a young man who is very uncomfortable in public speaking situations.
Because there wasn’t anything to hear.
Low football IQ negavols are always posting dumb stuff.

Heupel has been playing with his players since day one here. Everybody left through the portal. Those previous stops do not compare to his job here on any level whatsoever.
BS. You need to do research and check your facts before you post false information.

You made the statement the “roster must change and change quick”. I just pointed out the restrictions CJH had that other coaches didn’t have during the last 2 yrs.

Exactly let's clarify. They kick a late field goal to take the lead or UT is trying to drive for the winning TD in the last 2 minutes and you loose it still stings, but it is not the crap we saw last night...or at Florida.... or 2nd half Bama....or SC last year. There's loosing a road game and then there's not competing on a road game. Give us a fight or some effort. Wolfing at the players on the other team as they kick your butt is not effort. I really think this team is soft.
💯

I said the roster is getting better but it needs to get better quicker.

We are currently recruiting decent but it's not closing the gap between us and the top tier in the SEC. The team talent will get better the next two years as we graduate the current senior class and Junior class and replace thm with higher ranked recruiting classes.

Heupel has built a program that has done a great job retaining talent. Which is an underlooked part of college football in the transfer portal area.

I think he will need to land 2 or 3 difference makers in the portal each of the next two years to compete for championships. I'm not saying fire Heupel if he's not winning championships in year 5, I remember the coaches before him. But expectations should be fielding a team that can win championships.

If Nico is half as good as fans think he is, there is no way we win less than 8 no matter what the D looks like.
Nico reminds me of a tall Bryce Young. I think he can be that good, I’m just concerned he’ll be so green next year from lack of snaps this season. Maybe he’ll start in the bowl game if Milton sits out.

I don’t think Joe will skip the bowl. He’s not going to be more than a mid to late round pick anyway due to his age, and if he gets drafted at all it’ll be entirely based on his arm. I think he will stick it out for his teammates and try to finish on a positive note with a bowl win.

A loss is a loss. We don't have elite speed on defense. A RB matched up against any LB is a bad match up, and yesterday it was exploited.
What perplexed me is that we had the #1 run defense in the SEC before this game. I think the loss boils down to game plan, lack of motivation, lack of leadership, poor execution, and injuries.

Before the season, Dari said that we would take a step back because opposing coaches would have figured us out by year three. At the time I thought he was crazy; maybe I was wrong.
I don't think they have figured Hype offense out, we are just playing much more conservative this year with play calling. No near as many downfield passes as last year, not near as many passes to the middle of the field. Why? I really don't know only speculation. Is it the new oc, the lack of trust in the qb?

Many of the sec teams if they focus on stopping the run can do that. We didn't have a good game plan in case the run was stopped, which they did shut the run game down. We could have planned for short passes using the rb more. Quick 3 step drops and pass. We came back out the start of the 3rd qtr with the same offensive scheme we started with, no change at all.

Ungrateful? Games are sold out, Vol Walk is a zoo and the guy is a top 10 paid coach. However, no coach is above appropriate critique. Hell, some Pats fans are ready to run Bill Belichick, one of the greatest ever.
Appropriate critique? Go through this thread or look through the various ones post-Mizzou and tell me Heupel, after the success he’s had since the fiasco that was Pruitt’s departure, is receiving appropriate criticism. You have people calling for his head or saying ignorant things like “he’s just not the guy. Give him two years then hire Golesh.” That’s not appropriate criticism, that’s full blown ignorance.

This confuses me as well.

I have never really paid attention to it, but it was just called to my attention. With coach Frost players he went 12-1, 10-2 at UCF. His first year with his recruits went 6-4. This, IMO isn’t a great look. We saw what a qb (Dobbs, for example) can do for a coach. I think Hooker was that qb. I would be lying if I wasn’t worried. Great coaches do not get obliterated like this in year 3. Great coaches don’t struggle with Virginia and Austin Peay.
did you actually type "Stuggle with Virginia"? Jesus H Christ.

I've pointed it out before and got railed on for it..Coach Heupel just isn't a very road warrior.

His record on away games is .500 and even worse when those games are played at 330 or 7 o'clock.

He's even said it himself that he prefers to play at Noon on away games because it's easier to hold to the preparation routine for the entire team and maintain focus.
I think unless u have a serious juggernaut team, most coaches are aiming for .500 on the road. If u do that and win your home games u will consistently be in play for a 10 win season. We didn't go .500 on the road this year so we're looking at 9 wins if we don't go undefeated at home.

We had a bad game, we have plenty to address. But the folks whining about Heupel over a loss. Heupel didn’t takeover a loaded team at Tennessee, we were at the bottom of the barrel. He took that team and went 7-6 and actually almost did better. Nobody was expecting much at all the first year but we did better than expected. Last year most folks were only expecting 7-8 wins, I did pick 9. And we ended up 11-2. Now in the 3rd year we are going to finish either 9-3 or 8-4. Anybody ready to fire Heupel at this stage needs to frankly just shut up. Yes, the staff can improve and that goes for the head coach. We have to get deeper on both sides of the trenches. Run or pass, in the SEC the team that wins the trenches wins most of the games. Number 2 is the quarterback position, this was a tough year in that Milton was the epitome of waiting his turn a big arm and a great teammate. Nico is a very young true freshman with a great future, we have a lot of young talented freshman and sophomores and a future great quarterback. This year was the get over hump year with quarterbacks. I do expect a few changes to staff but not a major overhaul. I have great faith that the coming years will be very good ones for the Vols! But we have to develop what the elite teams have, good teams don’t let you up when they have you down and they don’t quit when they are down. Elite teams are consistently consistent. We have to become a mentally tougher team, we have to bring confidence and focus when we play on the road. We can’t be lax, we have to develop a killer instinct that refuses to be denied. We got bullied yesterday, and if we feel sorry for ourselves we are going to get bullied again this week in front of the home crowd. This team needs to find it’s mean streak. No doubt about 1 thing between this year and next this entire team needs to get stronger and faster and a lot tougher if it wants to be elite. No matter what next week if we don’t play with fire and effort I will be highly disappointed, I know Missouri was all set fire ready for us after the last few years. Losing a hard fought battle would have been no shame, but to unravel in the 4th quarter was disappointing but sometimes it happens. What is most important now is making the most of our chance this week. Georgia hasn’t lost in a long time, and we know we are capable of being a very dangerous team. Let’s go out there and lay it all on the line. To go get the win next week would be a huge statement and also disrupt Georgia’s pursuit for a title. It would also prove what we can do when we play 4 quarters with no let up. At the end of the day it’s a chance to beat undefeated number 1 who is going for a 3 peat national championship. Time for us to throw it all at the bulldogs and give them that loss, the perfect time for a big time win is next week in Neyland!!!!! GBO

38 transfers and a total of 28 scholarship reductions. What are you calling bs on? Your only argument is taking my statement literally. Literally, there were some bodies left.

This is pretty much my assessment as well. I have a real concern about Heupal's ability to coach to a championship level.
Who has the ability to coach to a championship level?, Saban, Smart? Who else do you want?

I don't think that 6-4 season was indicative of who he was as a coach. He had a down year, sure. But his 4 losses were to :

8-3 Memphis team
6-3 Tulane team - who had two narrow losses to #11 OKstate and #9 Cincinnati and another narrow loss to MSST on their bowl game
9-1 Cincinatti - the #7 team at the time of the game and went on to play UGA in the CFP.
11-1 BYU - #16 in the nation and had Zach Wilson at QB. Bowl game as well.

My conclusion is that Huepel didn't lose to bad teams. It was a down year with wonky circumstances due to Covid. Some teams had alot more rest, some players opted out, there were less fans, and for a while we didn't even know if there was going to be a season.

Its not like his offense was slowing down either. Dillon Gabriel had a great season and his offense scored 40+ most games. Only two losses where his team didn't reach 30. Maybe you can conclude his defenses were getting exposed. But here at Tennessee he is more equipped to field and sustain a formiddable defense.
