Those were George O'leary's players, he was HC coached there 11 years he retired Frost had a 1 season as HC at UCF so he went 13- 0) with O'leary's players. Also Gabriel who is QB at Okie now had a season ending injury while Hype was there and their team was littered with injuries but facts I guess don't matter. I actually think we have some real good raw talent since Hueple started recruiting still young in this age versus 5th & 6th year players everywhere. We where and are just one or 2 bad breaks of losing almost any game. We just don't have a deep roster and the winning experience to overcome bad hiccups. We have some good players sprinkled in here and there but with Pili & Mays out vs UF hurt a lot, no one to just step up like the top teams have. We were very fortunate last year a lot of things went our way e.g. the called back pick 6 vs Bama. Things like that nearly never happen to UT, you have to go back to 98 were we had around 4 miracle plays that won games for us. Pruitt left these teams in a fragile state example are some games this years especially 2nd half Bama , UF & Miz and USCe game last year. This team is still a fragile piece of work, that is better than most years we've had in last 20 years.I have never really paid attention to it, but it was just called to my attention. With coach Frost players he went 12-1, 10-2 at UCF. His first year with his recruits went 6-4. This, IMO isn’t a great look. We saw what a qb (Dobbs, for example) can do for a coach. I think Hooker was that qb. I would be lying if I wasn’t worried. Great coaches do not get obliterated like this in year 3. Great coaches don’t struggle with Virginia and Austin Peay.
We have some of the greatest, most loyal fans on the planet. But we also have a large number that are knee-jerk, immature and just not very bright.Ungrateful? Games are sold out, Vol Walk is a zoo and the guy is a top 10 paid coach. However, no coach is above appropriate critique. Hell, some Pats fans are ready to run Bill Belichick, one of the greatest ever.
yes it is. in 2021, and 2022, we had the 19th most talent, to Bama #1 & Georgia #2 2021 College Football Team Talent CompositeI said the roster is getting better but it needs to get better quicker.
We are currently recruiting decent but it's not closing the gap between us and the top tier in the SEC. The team talent will get better the next two years as we graduate the current senior class and Junior class and replace thm with higher ranked recruiting classes.
Heupel has built a program that has done a great job retaining talent. Which is an underlooked part of college football in the transfer portal area.
I think he will need to land 2 or 3 difference makers in the portal each of the next two years to compete for championships. I'm not saying fire Heupel if he's not winning championships in year 5, I remember the coaches before him. But expectations should be fielding a team that can win championships.
With 5 SEC teams in front of us in recruiting ranking this gap isn't closing that quickly. We are recovering from the talent that left when the coaches changed and a couple not great recruiting classes are graduating.yes it is. in 2021, and 2022, we had the 19th most talent, to Bama #1 & Georgia #2 2021 College Football Team Talent Composite
We are #16th now in 2023. but beyond the ranking the total talent has gone up as well.
we were behind Georgia 223 "talent points" in 2022, for 2023 we are 156 "talent points"
Bama we were 250 "talent points" behind in 2022, and are 194 points behind in 2023.
as long as our recruiting classes are higher than #16 we are improving, currently #11.
but more so than that #11, the quality we are bringing in is great, we are just behind in terms of the number of recruits we have. our current average player is 88.4, this '24 recruiting class is 91.40. which would have us #5 in the composite if we can keep up that quality.
