Yeah...helicopter accidents almost never end well. Neither do Ospreys for that matter. The odds of him surviving are probably really slim IMO.

Helicopters can shoot instrument approaches and at slower speeds, which helps. My guess is they had a mechanical issue and the fog exacerbated the problem if they were not close enough to a suitable airport to shoot an instrument approach to get on the ground.

Based on the photos it looks like they just flew straight into the side of a mountain. Very similar to Kobe's helicopter incident.

It’s an older helicopter, so I doubt they had an autopilot. Most likely were hand flying in IFR. CFIT because of poor flight planning or spatial disorientation and they Kobe’d it.
