Is Finebaum a UT fan, a UT hater or something else?

He’s honest. Rocky Top criticism over the past decade has been well warranted. Our winning tradition was essentially forfeited and now we’re trying to claw back into relevancy.

From time to time he will reiterate that the Bama radio market is what made him a regional media personality and he remains grateful to that market and his long-time (pre-SEC network) callers. If you listened to his show back in the days of the Mikes and the Logan Young/Albert Means saga, you'd have heard him go after UA coaches and decision makers much the same as guys like Basilio have turned on such people at UTK when it became apparent they were not succeeding. If you only know him from the time when ESPN/SECN picked up his show for simulcast then you wouldn't have ever had the opportunity to hear that side of him.

Been following Finebaum since the 90’s he’s never really changed. He was very critical of Bama back then when they were going thru coaches like toilet paper and on probation. He plays to his crowd much like Jerry Springer his crazy callers made him famous as much as anything.

Paul makes a living poking the lower and mid-tier fanbases, and kissing the top tier, where the viewers are.
Paul plays the television game very well. He plays the show like a wrestling gimmick. You sell the babyface champion to the yokels who love the show, and then creates a ton of heat with all the consolation prize fanbases.
Nailed it!

The wrestling angle is a damn fine analogy.

Pawl is a Tennessee alumnus, but unlike a lot of graduates, he is painfully much more objective from his entertainment platform than the homer media piled up in Knoxville that have to have local advertisers to turn sports conversation into dollars, Pawl doesn't have that issue and has never been afraid to point out how turned around the Tennessee athletic programs have been over the last decade. He's never really been afraid to point out the problems, the failings and the lack of success within the SEC when it is relevant and entertaining.

Pawl is one of the few SEC/ESPN shows that actually has a sustained and growing audience from time to time, which mirrors the success and popularity of the SEC sports brands, particularly football, during the school year.

Pawl is an SEC guy and the noise he makes, draws listeners and viewers to all things SEC, win and he'll point out the things you are doing well, fail, tank it, break the rules, go Jimbo, end up in front of the NCAA committee on infractions, he'll razz your program until something more sensational comes across his desk.

He’s neither, but he gets a sparkle in his eyes when UT does well. He was on Heupel’s jock hard last year.

Paul is playing for nothing more than likes or viewership. He sold out just like Doering…Booger…and all of them. They can’t show their true colors, if he has any, or that would show bias, and we can’t have any of that in today’s world.

I know he's an alumnus, but it doesn't feel like he loves his alma mater.
He lives in Alabama. His show is taped in Alabama. He’s aware of how hated UT is in Alabama and doesn’t want to encourage the Harvey Updyke’s of the world to harass him where he lives. You don’t have to be a homer for wherever you went to school if it would affect your livelihood.

Paul is a clown only with satellite ears instead of a big nose. He was front and center during the firing of Butch / hiring of Schiano saying some nasty things about Tenn. Will never forgive him for what he did and said.

He's a pompous, pontificating blowhard who is too in love with his own voice. He is the white Stephen A. Smith.

He’s a front runner, he’s a fan of Tennessee (or anyone else) when they’re on top and a detractor when they’re not. His football IQ is pretty pedestrian for a so called College football expert and insider. Never been a fan of his or his takes, his show is garbage.

He's painful to watch...he looks like such a dork. Personally I turn it off when he's on. He's about s exciting as a plain hotdog bun.

Yeah well, Finebaum has parlayed his smooth voice into a multi million dollar career; with fans from all over the Country. Pretty he ain't, but Smart & Rich he is. There is a place for everyone, Finebaum proves that. (Oh and He doesn't need a football neck to do his job)
