Is Mike Hamilton the greatest AD of all time?

Do you really think Missouri St. wouldn't give back that regular season championship in exchange for a tournament championship and a shot to go to the NCAA tourney?

That's the difference in college basketball and football. In basketball the regular season means almost nothing. All that matters is reserving your seat at that final table. That's why I'd hate to see college football go to a playoff system. It's one of the few sports where the regular season truly matters.
I'll take the season as evidence of coaching opposed to a 3 or 4 game conference tournament.

I agree and it's the reason VCU is basically a sham. They aren't good enough to get in on their performance but now have a shot to win it all. Play well for a couple weeks and your season failures are wiped away. Not to mention your coach is suddenly the best anywhere

What took Moore so long to start ponying up the money? Maybe it's that he took 4 tries to find anyone worth that kind of money. By that logic, Hamilton should get another attempt. He already hired his Franchione and his Shula. Surely his Saban is next.

Huh? Both Franchione and Shula beat Tennessee. When did Kiffin or Dooley beat Alabama?

Nah, no way he'd spend the money. Probably just hire Fulmer back and raise ticket prices again.

Not necessarily the best anywhere, but he did what it took to get them into the dance. Martin's supposedly "better" team choked their opportunity away.

MH is a bottom line kind of guy. UT made more profit from its basketball program than UK did from a post I saw this week. Cheap may equal profit.

Most are a little slow, yeah you might have a point. By the time they all figure it out bam he's got your money. Man he's not as dumb as i thought.

We've had that guy here for the past 6 years, and plenty of people complained when we choked year after year in the "meaningless" conference tournament.
He won one conference regular season title with by far the best team in the conference, and he's only gone because his own stupidity with regards to NCAA issues.

they choked? Interesting

Well, they were the best team in the conference all year yet didn't win the tournament to get into the NCAAT. Sounds like a choke to me.

Either way, I'm not even 1/10 as down on this hire as I am on the DD hire last year. I'd still like to think we had raised our status during the Pearl years a little bit, but if not so be it. It's not like UT is a traditional basketball power, so attracting elite coaches probably wasn't going to happen. This is a decent fallback.

However, there isn't now, nor will there ever be a viable excuse for why Tennessee has one of the 3-4 worst football coaches in the SEC. That's my main beef with Hamilton. Football is the true moneymaker for the AD, and it's pathetic that he's allowed it to fall to these depths.

You wouldn't take Dooley over more than 3 or 4 other coaches in the SEC? I'm not overly optimistic about Dooley, but I can certainly name more than 4 I'd take him over.

Clearly I wouldn't trade him for UK or Vandy's coach. We'll see if Chizik can win without paying players, and Muschamp is also a wait and see, but I have a feeling he's going to kill DD in recruiting at the end of the day. Other than those, everyone else in the conference has had at least some success. Les Miles seems like a fool, but he's clearly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for getting every break EVER to go his way, so I'd take him as well. DD is in the bottom third for sure.

I mean, I don't know of anyone else who can hire both a football coach and a basketball coach, and manage to please both diehard Vol fans as well as the fans of all their rivals.

I don't know about you, but personally, I can't wait to see what this guy does next.

Force Pat Summitt into early retirement, so he can hire the fat girl from Facts of Life?

Try to buy Kentucky out of the annual football match-up so Dooley can keep the streak alive?

Track down Fulmer and give him a few more million for his retirement?

Who can say? The only thing that's certain, is that most of this board will get behind him.

You left out all the millions of dollars he saved the university by hiring all these coaches we've never heard of before.
Going after a big name coach would have cost UT millions.

Not to mention all the money he saved in concessions by hiring cheap vendors.

I wouldn't want Petrino within 300 miles of Knoxville.

I'm glad Miles isn't coaching in Knoxville too. Teams win in spite of his coaching, not because of it.

Chizik can keep his stupid ass in Auburn. He's surrounded himself with a bunch of jokes and one up and coming OC (that's a slimeball POS too).

Joker and James Franklin are jokes.

That's six.

I don't know if DD will ever win a SEC Championship here but I can guarantee he'll leave Knoxville in better shape for the next guy than the 6 other coaches leave their respective schools.

You're giving Muschamp a lot of praise without anything to really back it up too. He's going to clash with Weiss.
