Is Mike Hamilton the greatest AD of all time?

Exactly. But then there are also hires that no decent SEC program would make, like Derek Dooley.
Or Mike Shula, but people forget about him as soon as Moore gets a lucky break. Tennessee didn't have a lot of options when they hired Dooley. If we wanted to do better than Dooley, we were probably going to have to get an interim coach.

No doubt. However, that still makes his tenure wildly more successful than that of Mike Price.

How much better? Considering the alternative was there for about 2 weeks and a lap dance.

Price wasn't in Tuscaloser long enough to even put a dent in that hell hole.

No, but it did take opening the checkbook to a level that MH has proven he's too cheap to do. In his opinion it's better to have a crappy coach and thus an awful team for the sake of saving a little money on the front end. How he can't grasp that the added revenue generated by fielding a winner will more than cover the added cost of hiring decent coaches still blows my mind.

You hit the nail. How shortsighted is that? But please give dipietro and cheek there share of the credit.

begging for Smart while knocking the hire of Martin is absolutely ridiculous (so is putting him in the same league as Stevens)

I'm not begging for him, but he's one of the up and comers this year. Smart has a Final Four on his resume now, and that's got to count for a little something when it comes to recruiting. Say what you will about his intangibles, but Martin still has yet to even get a team into the NCAAT.

This is my point exactly. UT's athletics are suffering under MH. You can call it bad luck if you like, but it has been a whole lot of bad luck, unlike Mal Moore's gaffs that landed Saban.
Suppose Harbaugh wants to come back to college and his only choices are Tennessee and NC State. If Hamilton misses out on 3 other coaches and then Haslam just buys Harbaugh, is Hamilton a good AD now?

and Smart shouldn't have even gotten his in. At least Martin can win his conf

He left them with Shula and nothing for the future. Kiffin gets the edge.

I'm with you on that. Shaka's resume is one year thinner than Martin's, although this tournament has been dramatic. The question on Shaka is- a one hit wonder or wonder child?

I'd feel a whole lot better!

Then that's what we should have done. I know the 2010 class would have suffered, but lets be honest, what's really the difference between a 4-8 season and a 6-7 one. Both suck. In the long run we'd have been better off. Hire a coach this past fall, and we're already getting back on track this year and next. As it is, we still get outrecruited by half the SEC, and are likely waiting out 2 more years of Dooley till we can really try to get going again.

Shula was a bad hire, no doubt, but his '05 season (before the wins were vacated) is likely far better than anything DD will ever put together in Knoxville.

So if Haslam decides to offer Jon Gruden 10 million dollars to replace Dooley and Gruden accepts and wins big here, does that mean Hamilton did a good job?
Nobody in their right mind (big name anyway) would come here and work under Hamilton now. Jim would have to back a Wells Fargo truck up to their door just to be granted a interview.

I actually would agree, but that would be taking a risk. If we hired an interim and botched the next hire, UT would be absolutely screwed.

Possibly, but I'm not so sure. Dooley has an opportunity to match that in 2012 and 2013, IMO.

Why would anyone work for Moore? Serious question. A successful coach will work wherever he wants without caring about the athletic director.

regular season champs means more than tourney champs but Smart still has neither. He's having a good run with a team that jacking up 3's and finally hitting them. Too bad they couldn't do it during the reg season

Alabama won 10 games in '05. I certainly don't see Dooley even coming close to that if he doesn't step his recruiting up. You don't win 10 games by having less talent than half the conference.

That's true. They know the majority of people aren't going to stop going to the games. That's the only thing that will ever get the point across to them. For as much as I detest what our football program has been allowed to become, I'll still shell out $1000+ this fall to attend the home games, as well as spending a couple weekends on the road to watch them, and all that to watch yet another 6-6 or 7-5 team that will probably get manhandled by our main rivals. Following a sports team is like a drug in a lot of ways. The administration knows they've got people hooked, so it seems they could honestly care less whether we win or lose. They're making money either way.

what he said

Don't understand how you can say that Saban was a proven SEC coach, wasn't he.
Because how often do you find a coach in the NFL that wants to leave Miami, Florida for a college job in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It would be like leaving the Dallas Cowboys to coach the Colorado Buffaloes.

Because he ponied up the money. Yeah you're right it's not that Hamilton is all that bad, it's just the fact that he and all the people that make the hires up there are cheap. Thanks for clearing that all up for me.

more donations would help them spend more. Pony up

Do you really think Missouri St. wouldn't give back that regular season championship in exchange for a tournament championship and a shot to go to the NCAA tourney?

That's the difference in college basketball and football. In basketball the regular season means almost nothing. All that matters is reserving your seat at that final table. That's why I'd hate to see college football go to a playoff system. It's one of the few sports where the regular season truly matters.

What took Moore so long to start ponying up the money? Maybe it's that he took 4 tries to find anyone worth that kind of money. By that logic, Hamilton should get another attempt. He already hired his Franchione and his Shula. Surely his Saban is next.
