Is Obama really a socialist?

You can learn things from the media too, but are you going to let them tell you who to vote for?

The anonymity the internet provides brings out radical views in people that isn't truly representative of the candidate they are endorsing. It's a bad place to try and figure out who to vote for.

You said this is a good place to learn things, but not to get an education.

You can learn things about astronomy by reading Omni. Does that mean you have an education in astronomy?

I don't really understand why you are arguing with me, my point was obvious.

I don't see any benefits long or short. Sure, my taxes might be lowered, but my costs will increase. Obama is planning massive tax increases on corporations. When you make it more expensive for a company to do business, the end result is higher prices for the products they sell.

Taxes aside, Obama wants to eliminate the secret ballot for union representation. Pelosi and Reid support the Employee Free Choice act as well. Strengthening the unions in this way is very Marx-like and personally, I want nothing to do with a union. As a truck driver, I know the Teamsters' Union is one of the most corrupt unions in the country and I have no intention of signing one of their cards should one be handed to me.

Unions have almost become extinct in this day and age. This is actually a non-issue, or at least an unimportant one at the moment. It can be found way down on the list

Do you live in East Tennessee?

tell that to GM, F, or Chrysler.
exactly. Splain to them that they're going broke because the unions are gone and those little pension issues are just a tired thing of yore.

The airlines are loving that unions aren't killing them. Our education system is improving daily because of the unions.

I work for US Foodservice, unions have been agitating at many of our warehouses but are consistently voted down. Don't think for one minute that they're extinct or a non-issue. When I worked at Cintas, there were union activities that were voted down. The Employee Free Choice Act would eliminate the secrecy of the ballot. Personally, I'd rather not have a union goon looking over my shoulder while I piss on the union card he just handed me.

Obama has reportedly kicked several major newspapers off of his campaign plane. One of the hallmarks of socialism is to eliminate the opposition media.

I have heard this as well. I would like to see a report from a 3rd party rather than a story from either the left or the right, before I pass judgement

BPV...what in your opinion are the main things Obama plans to do that you consider forms of socialism?

Let me put in my two cents:

Obama wants to tax everyone making over $250,000. So alll small business's making over $250,000 dollars would be paying taxes. Small business provides so many jobs for others, just think about the small business in our communities. I own an insurance agency with 14 employees and if Obama puts in his taxes on everyone over $250,000, my biggest expense is the payroll and benefits, then I will probably have to let 2-3 people go. What if all small businesses have to let 2-3 people go????? I would say that unemployment will go from 6% to 12% or higher in the first year.

If you raise taxes on the so called "rich" then the "rich" cut back and don't purchase anything and who suffers then?

I worry about employees and their families that have kids and to have to let some go just kills a small business owner.

On the other hand if Obama spreads the wealth as he calls it around there will be no middle class. You will be wither ultra rich or just poor, then you can no longer stand up to the government,,,,,,,,,,,

That is socialism in my book.

Thanks for listening.

I'll take "the socialist" for $500, Alex...
The point is, though, that -- and it’s not just charity, it’s not just that I want to help the middle class and working people who are trying to get in the middle class -- it’s that when we actually make sure that everybody’s got a shot – when young people can all go to college, when everybody’s got decent health care, when everybody’s got a little more money at the end of the month – then guess what? Everybody starts spending that money, they decide maybe I can afford a new car, maybe I can afford a computer for my child. They can buy the products and services that businesses are selling and everybody is better off. All boats rise. That’s what happened in the 1990s, that’s what we need to restore. And that’s what I’m gonna do as president of the United States of America.

John McCain and Sarah Palin they call this socialistic. You know I don’t know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness.

maybe not what you're looking for as far as confirmation goes, but the WaTimes has covered it.

Washington Times - Washington Times kicked off Obama plane

and here is the Politico's coverage:

Ben Smith's Blog: Off the plane - Politico.com

to be fair, the McCain campaign has excluded some columnists, like Maureen Dowd and Joe Klein, from his plane, but that's not the same as kicking off an entire newspaper.

From what I've read the additional tax would be 4% only on the portion of your income over 250K.So if your business has a net profit of 300k the additional tax would be 2k.

Your portion of the social security tax would kick in again only when an employees salary went over 250K.

Your employee's who make less than 250K/yr will pay less tax than they do now, so they should be better off, at least tax wise.

This is based on what Obama has said, but who knows how it will end up, once Congress gets involved.

Read up on US Federal Tax codes. Small, unincorporated business owners are taxed on revenue, not net income. So, if your small business brings in $300K in revenue, yet your pay out $200K in operating expenses, as an individual you are taxed as bringing in $300K in personal income.

The alternative minimum tax (AMT) severely hampers small business owners from claiming and itemizing all the expenses they incur from their business.

In effect, most all small and medium sized business owners are taxed as though they bring in over $250K annually in personal income.

My point was the impact on those effected will be 4% only on the amounts over 250K,per what Obama said .Up until that point you will not pay anymore than you are currently paying.
Per what Obama is saying, those making over $250K will not only be taxed at a higher annual income tax rate (36% and 39%) and higher capital gains and dividends rates (20%), they will also be taxed on their tax returns from 2001-2008.

Oh, and let's not forget about his desire to stop the current phase out on estate taxes.

Those figure impact small business. Keyword here is SMALL.

Do you know how many small businesses this will effect? Businesses that are still struggling to build the business. Do you know how many people are employed by those small businesses?
