Is Pruitt unwilling to give an OC control?

Fair enough. I would say the oline And lack of talent led to the limited play calling but that’s just an opinion too. I’m sure all coaches are somewhat micromangers to a certain degree. The navy football helmet represents you or family?
Im a Marine, long story but I go for Navy Sports as a second team.

Well, in all fairness, I did forget to check the average weight of their lineman. Lol

I actually got curious about this.

Charlotte’s DL average weight is 248

Average weight of our OL, without TEs added, is 301, and we have 9 OLineman under 300lbs. If you add in the TEs it drops to 285.

Now just for giggles I checked Vandy OL and Georgia OL, both without TEs.

Vandy Avg is 277
UGA Avg is 319

UGA for example only has one OLineman under 300 lbs.

OP - that certainly may be a part of it.

People keep talking about money but forget that isn't the main motivator for many. Yurcich said as much.

Furthermore, long-term horizon planning suggests we should analyze in 3-5+ year periods, not simply how much we can immediately make. If he could make 1m at OSU vs 1.2 at UT, which will make him more money? There's a good argument the OSU will end in more money long-term.

No....The offense has to compliment the defense....and vice versa...

I think Pruitt gets this, unlike Butch...

What does this even mean?

Fwiw, Butch played field position quite a bit. That's the main example I can think of as far as complimentary football goes.

Pruitt knows his reputation as a head coach; longevity at UT; and chances at another HC job if he leaves UT (circle one or all) hinge on what happens with this program over the next 3 seasons. Recruiting is on the upswing, which is one of his known strengths. That 5-7 season has to be gnawing at his insides, and I'll wager that he is vowed and determined that it will not happen again. Hence the comments about "recruiting better players". It was an intentional, if somewhat unprofessional, shot across the bow of both over-rated and under-performing players. I'd say there's a level of "get better now" inside the program that UT has not seen in decades. Good...it's overdue.

The OC choice is important, and it's critical for Pruitt. He needs to be able to sit back and manage the overall program, without paying too much attention to one area over the others. Thus, he needs an OC that he can trust with half of his team. I'm also guessing that a condition of the hire is that the majority, if not all of, the current "O" staff stays in place. Taking into account the 10-year-deep abyss that UT football has fallen in to; the strength of the SEC East; the likes of Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M on the other side; and having to work with the existing staff...finding the right OC is going to be tough.

Only two options seem to fit. One, an experienced OC or position coach who got canned on a HC change; doesn't like the NFL; or relishes the challenge (and the potential pay raise) that UT offers; and two, an "up and comer" who sees UT as a place to plant his flag and make his name. That's my guess, which is at least as bad as any other here.

If he promotes from within, then it means no one outside the program would take the job under his terms.

Go Vols.

Great summary! I think he needs to go with Option # 1: the old guy.

Head coaches do not give up control of any entity in their program. Fulmer pissed off Cut and Chavis many times with changes to play calls, plans or who might play. Coordinators work for the head coach and at the end of the day, the head coach can make the final call. I have spoken with both of them when they were so mad they could chew nails.

I get that type of interjection - but what about overall scheme and implementation. I just have a hard time seeing how that was ever Helton's scheme to begin with considering his tree. I guess we'll see this year at WKU.

Agree regarding Helton.

Wont be surprised if his offense takes off at WKU.

It's not the money that is the sticking point. It's that we are not only one of the worst teams in the SEC, we also ranked near the bottom in about every category statistically in the NCAA in offense.

And we are asking candidates to leave their jobs in the toughest conference in the Country with very little depth. And I have been reading and hearing that Fulmer and Pruitt wants the next OC to stick with the current coaching staff instead of bringing in their own guys, which have been a sore spot for some candidates (K. Briles). This is why we won't get the splash hire everyone wants.

That argument falls flat when you consider FSU and Kansas.

I think autonomy is huge for coordinators and we have to be willing to let them do their thing. No coordinator wants to be micromanaged, especially not an OC being micro'd by a defensive guy.

I think it's safe to assume that potential OCs don't like that Pruitt is making all the coaches share a single office for team unity, and that he insists on dictating gameday footwear for all staff. Nobody likes to be told that kind of thing. And it's clear that they're not happy with the heavily regulated meal seating arrangements that are organized on a merit basis. No self-respecting coach will walk into a situation like that.

Are you being serious? I've not heard anything like that.

Wanted to start a discussion that is going to tear some of your bowels up, so just find another thread if you need to. Based on reports of all of the interviews and the time frame of this OC search(41 days and counting) I think it's safe to assume that Pruitt has offered the OC to job to some of these OCs. My question is why are they turning the job down? We know the money is there, so why are these coaches choosing to go elsewhere over UT? I know this is going to infuriate the "nobody knows anything" nazis, but I say if the UT admin doesn't want speculation, they can leak some information, handle this in a timely manner, or deal with it. I was never on board with the Tyson Helton hire, but I still don't think he was anywhere near as bad as he appeared here. First time head coaches sometimes have trouble giving up control on the side of the ball that they aren't as familiar with. Dabo struggled with it when he first became a HC. What say you? Is that the case here? Is there another reason coaches are opting for other programs?
Talent level, expectations, unproven coach, historically cheap and inept administration, playing in the toughest conference in the country. All of those are evaluated when you're hiring a top tier guy. Not to mention we've culled some we've talked with as well.

Some pretty big assumptions in the OP, OP.

Like, CJP has offered the job to a lot of people.

Like, a lot of people have turned the job down.

What if, maybe, just maybe, Pruitt knew exactly who he wanted before Helton ever left, and Pruitt quietly asked that person, and that person agreed (but only after that person's current team's season is over), and it has all been settled all this time except for a delayed announcement and a mouth-breathing fan base?

I consider that scenario just as likely as any other offered on these boards over the past month.
