Is Stokes Coming Back?

There's a few more left, if they all announce they're returning Stokes may creep firmly into the late second round. The question he has to answer though is, is late 2nd round what he wants?

Even if a few more announce, there would be nothing firm about it. Those mocks are notoriously bad at predicting the later parts of the second round. Remember the draft with Hopson? Late in that 2nd round period, rather than drafting known college players, a lot of teams were doing weird things like claiming the rights to guys in foreign countries that most folks hadn't heard of. Hopson was supposed to be mid to late 2nd round, but ultimately being in that space simply means that you hope some team likes you enough to take a chance. There are no guarantees, and Stokes is far enough down that he almost certainly wouldn't be drafted, regardless of the decisions of other guys. IMO, I think the real quandary he is dealing with is whether or not he'd be willing to take the risk of not getting drafted and trying to work his way into the league from Europe. You get paid a good deal, but you have to go to a foreign country and getting into the league from there is tough, since there's hundreds of other players with the same idea.

All very true. If he goes I would have to think he was informed by a GM or two that if he's there they'll take him in round 2.

"As poster indicated, deadline is the 28th. I haven't heard anything that makes me think he's leaving. Obviously, he could wake up Sunday and decide he wants to take a shot, but I expect him back as of now."

Boom.

There really is no "testing the waters" anymore. A guy used to be able to leave his name in the draft and not hire an agent. Then if he got drafted he could decide to hire and agent and go pro. If he didn't get drafted or didn't like where he was drafted, he could return to college (as long as no agent was hired). They don't let them do that anymore.

Yeah. By testing the waters, I was meaning he's getting more input about the possibilities of going pro since his name is still in there. And I'm REALLY glad you can't do that anymore.

Not necessarily.

Signed,
Peyton Manning

Joking aside, you're probably right. Most kids just release the info without a presser these days anyhow.

I think Bruin was referring to the quote by Martin
He might just want to go under the radar, just go about his business, if he’s not doing anything. If he’s doing something, he’ll probably want a press conference.

Basically sounds like if he's going there's a presser, if he staying probably just a little released statement by UT.

Man, I was looking at the 2013 "mock drafts" today, and it's sparse. I could see Stokes, with a really good work out, going in the first round.

That's what I love about the date being pushed up because you don't get to do much of that anymore. I think he has all the potential in the world to be solid but he needs sooo much work. I hate seeing guys with a ton of potential waste it on bad advice but your right, he could be. Still, you can't help but feel a little Kwame Brown / Sebastian Telfairish.

You don't need to come back to improve your game......the reason to come back is to trick/prove to a NBA team that they should take u with first round pick.....you can improve while getting paid in the pros.

You're right. He can improve in the NBA but he's going to have a much better chance to be a better player by coming back and working out / playing another year in college.

Why is that? Coaches don't have near the access orpractice time they have available in the pros plus they are going against better competition

TIFWIW....some posters on VQ are saying Stokes wants to return, and has wanted to, but there was illegal contact with an agent and UT has been trying to figure out whether or not he'd be eligible, that is why it has dragged on.

All true but you can honestly say that Stokes would be better off going now than coming back? He'd have another year to dominate a college paint, work on freethrows and any other part of his game that would increase his value on draft day. He was horrible from the line this year and didn't dominate nearly as much as he's capable of. He'd have a chance to do that next season and look a lot better this time next year.

That would be a nightmare if true. Herschel Walker feels his pain.
