Is UT or Florida the 2nd Best SEC Program?

Florida is not only behind Tennessee, but also Georgia, LSU & probably Auburn. They never won hardly anything in ANY sport until the 1990s. They're a Johnny-come-lately & won't match the history of the top of the SEC for many years to come.

Not saying it isn't important. But the author's formula gives division titles the exact same weight as conference titles, and that's just silly.

It SHOULD carry the same weight. In order to win your conference you have to win your division. They go hand in hand! Just like in order to win a national championship you need to win your conference....Oh wait a minute!

But how many times would UT and Florida may have rematched if the BCS was around before '98?

Auburn has the most undefeated seasons in college football since '93.

The reason the formula doesn't work is that it gives conference championships post-1992 double the credit of a championship pre-1992.

At what point do they stop becoming a "Johnny-come-lately?" They've been very good for about the last 30 years.

That's how the SEC wanted it though, just like expansion and whatever else they decide to do with the conference.

Explain to me why a Heisman matters?

It is a trophy given to a player without any sort of defined criteria, voted on by past recipients and certain members of the media.

It is heavily influenced by lobbying from teams, exposure and pressure by the media, and has no definitive criteria.

The Heisman has some historical significance, but the past 20 years has proven (at least to me) that it might be one step above a Nickelodean Kid's choice award.

Johnny Majors agrees.

That definitely muddies the waters, unless you give equal credit to the SEC's second place team pre-1992.

Even then it doesn't work. Winning your division doesn't make you the second best team in the conference. UGA won the East in '11, and they were ranked behind 3 other SEC teams heading into the SECCG.

BCS poll is designed to select the two best teams in the country. The CCG is not designed to select the two best teams in the conference, merely the division representatives. Therefore chaos ensues. I love college football.

The SEC decided to make historical changes by adding a conference championship game, expanding again last year, and possibly expanding to 16 soon.

Again, that doesn't make a divisional title post-'92 the same as a conference title pre-'92. So you can't weight them the same when determining historical rankings.

i guess having the most sec championships in all sports (by a wide margin by the way) wouldn't be a reason to doubt this claim.

What about '95? But Nebraska was undefeated I believe when they drilled Florida. I doubt Nebraska would have drilled UT.

Considering UF drilled UT that same season, and the '95 Nebraska team is considered by many to be one of the all-time greats, I think anyone who lined up against the Huskers that night in Tempe would have taken a beating.

And doing pretty good nationally.

All time national titles recognized by the SEC:
LSU - 46
R-Kansas -31
Florida - 29
Georgia - 28
Alabama - 19
Tennessee - 18
Auburn - 17
Kentucky - 9
South Carolina - 3
(4) - 1

Can we have a shout out and a collective SEC hand-wringing for Miss St.? They get this baseball thing in Omaha, it will be NC #1. They are currently the only SEC team without national credentials.

Wasn't any chance of such happening in 95 because of Nebraska, and also Ohio State at 11-1 and Northwestern at 10-1 were both teams ranked above UT prior to the bowl games

and yes, Nebraska that year would have beaten the stuffing out of UT just like it did UF
