Us making rules just for ourselves isn't productive in that respect. It paints a target on our backs.
Were the Americans there taken hostage because they are American? If I remember correctly, people from several countries were kidnapped.

For those who value their life, the lives of their village, the lives of their loved ones this approach would not put a target on our back. For those who don't value those things, there is nothing to remove the target from our back.

We don't. We do not pursue violence against enemies in a way that convinces someone we aren't to be trifled with.

Here's an experiment to help elucidate my gist. Think of the most brutal mob of all time..cartel, yakusa, mafia...whatever. Do you provoke that group of people?

It would depend on whether I owe them pain. So if I'm motivated to, yes. And you'll say they'd destroy my town with me in it. My neighbors will get retribution. And the cycle will continue.
Look at us and the Houthis recently. We swore we'd break bad on them if they kept lobbing missiles. They kept acting up and we tried to blast them. What's the situation now? They're still lobbing missiles.

Maybe if we neutron bombed the rest of the world nobody would mess with us any more, and we could go steal their stuff at our leisure. Of course that would kill any American hostages just like us raining hellfire on Gaza would.

You're not being serious. If insta-death awaits, if you have no hope of destroying the Mob, you take your pain and find a therapist.

You ain't gonna do jack to them.

How about this example: would you steal a cub from its Grizzly Bear mother?

Unfortunately, some hostages would be lost in the early implementation of my strategy. A few more as upstarts tested our resolve over the next few years.
Then, we would have no more issues.
