The one thing Utah St had was a really good d-line. 1st game with new off. line against a good d- line I'll take it. They will be much better next game but it will get lost cause you'll say Ark St. JMO

Utah State was vastly overrated. They started virtually a brand new OL as well. Keeton is not a Heisman candidate. They may win some games in their weak ass conference. The "experts" were wrong about them. UT, as deficient in depth as they are, were superior in talent to Utah St and it showed big time.

Great win for the Vols largely because of the deficit in which they won.

Worley was turn over free but some of those wild passes will be picked by better talented and faster defenders. He sailed the ball to open receivers and threw a number in the dirt.

The running game was virtually non existent against a team that the Vols should have been able to push up and down the field. Lane needs to be ran to near death, with Hurd getting his share of the load too.

If this is going to be a pass happy offense and pass first mentality, they are in for a miserable season.

We were a 5.5 favorite at kickoff ..at home. Vegas does make stuff up , there are experts . The line flows based on the collective perception of the betters. Impressive knowledge that you possess after the fact. If you possess that knowlege pregame ...I suggest that you go and make yourself rich .

I think what you should take from this is the drastic improvement that you witnessed. Will they beat Bama or the Sooners ? Probably not . Lets not forget that last season with inferior talent and ability they did beat USCe , almost beat UGA , and was in the game with Vandy . Outside of 2 games on their scchedule ,,,they have a realistic shot

Yeah ...that pass first mentality . I don't recall a fundamentally simple , layered west coast passing system ever having any success.

Last time I was this satisfied with a UT performance was Cal in 06. We found a way to score regardless of deficiencies and our Defense layed the boom for 59.5 minutes (looking at you Coleman :/ ) . Who cares if we have the horses to beat OK, Bama etc yet. We have a team worth watching and getting excited about again.

Yes madbamahater,it was Utah state,and these reasons it was big;
1) We won
2) The new players played very well for their first college game
3)We played as a team on the field,not several individuals
4)We have areas to work on(just like bamas defense)
5) The fans(crowd) was excited and stayed that way
6)The coaches made adjustments at half as needed
7)The "circle of life drum and players drill needs to be forever,just as running through the "T"

I work with an Alabama fan and asked him what his thoughts on their game were. He said "I thought they sucked."

I only hope that we Vol fans, after experiencing such lows, never find that we take the game of football and our team's successes for granted. What we are seeing now is something we should enjoy.

The OP is not wrong. I'm still pretty pleased though. This is a young team that is going to really come together by mid season and be a force to be reckoned with in the east. Oklahoma and UGA will be rough as hell early on though, if we're being realistic.

It's the same as every year though, fans get too high on a win or too low on a loss.

This.. I will hold my opinion until OU. Its on the road and they are not the ducks but it could get ugly. Let's see what our team can do against great OOC teams.

Supposedly the biggest improvement comes between the 1st and 2nd games. I'm interested in seeing if UT places emphasis on running the ball against Ark St.

All in all, a very good 1st game. Sure there were some individual components that weren't up to snuff, but we all knew this going in.

and i think we all know that what worked against USt won't work against OU, Bama, etc. of course, nothing that UT could come up with would work anyway as those programs are too far ahead at this point.

but what we are seeing might be enough to win some games against teams like mizzou and Scar. coupled with what should be the gimme games, there is potential for a nice season outcome.

Bamahater is right that USU was likely not as good as advertised. Also, I agree that we do not need to be a one dimensional, pass-happy offense - definitely need to be able to run the ball better.

However, I do believe that USU was gearing to stop the run and therefore we used that opportunity to get into the right plays to take advantage of that. Hence, the numerous pass plays ( successful ones, at that).

I strongly disagree that Worley's passes would have gotten picked against other competition. In fact, most ( if not all) of his incompletions were thrown to where only our guys had any shot at catching them.

I agree, all these Vol nation posters will get a huge wake up call when we go get thumped by 38 points at OK.

This team is young, and this will be a good learning year for them for next year but please people quick sniffing the white stuff. They are a year away still maybe two, our QB play still sucks, we have a O line that cant run block. Any decent Defence will shut us down to 10 points or less. I know re quote me and bash all u want, give it a few weeks you'll see how young this team is.

Yeh we still have a ton of improving to do before we start beating our drums. The discipline and preparation overall was very refreshing. The thing is , we will rise again and we will fall again. Just enjoy the good games and take some Valium. People get way too stressed about things that are supposed to be entertainment.
