It's a whole new ballgame: 2008 New York Yankees Thread

New York only has 26 World Series Titles, not 27. It doesn't matter though, for the 2008 season all that will get you is a bunch of "boy this stadium sure has a bunch of memories, I'm sorry to see it go" quotes by baseball fans. It will do nothing to figure out a way to overcome Boston's potent lineup.

I am starting to dislike you now that you said this.

I am starting to dislike you now that you said this.

i despise both the yankees and the red sox, but the Yankees didn't really do much to help their cause of beating out Boston for the AL East Title. With the moves Seattle made and all the good teams in the Central, it's nowhere near a guarantee that 2nd place in the East will get the AL Wild Card

seriously UTCLA, you have to be worried that after Wang you have two over the hill guys, one of which can't stay healthy, and two guys that have never truly been tested.

I think Wang is a great pitcher don't get me wrong here, but I also think he's going to have to get another pitch soon or AL hitters will start figuring him out. His sinker is absolutely devastating, but it's really his only "out" pitch.

Tell that to Brandon Webb.

And I have complete trust in Phil Hughes. Absolute, complete, unassuming, unwavering, sublime trust in Phil Hughes.

Because if I don't, well then the season and the future looks bleak.

Also I really really really don't like Wang's playoff resume. It is truely worrying me.

I think Webb's curve is slightly better than Wang's slider. I watched a few Dbacks games last year and Webb seemed to use a changeup more than in 2006. Supposedly Wang has added a changeup to his repetioure. I guess time will tell if it's going to be effective for him.

As for Hughes I would definitely have more faith in him than Kennedy.

As long as you hate the Red Sox too, then I guess I can live with it Bill. Promise me you wont pull for the Chicago though.

a look at my avatar tells you all you need to know about my allegiances. I do sort of root for the Cubs to win the Series just so i never have to hear about goats and curses again.

I've always been a sucker for perpetual misery. I guess it's because of how I enjoyed the Red Sox' ineptness for so long.

I really thought Torre should have thrown Kennedy out there in place of Clemens against the Injuns last year, but it's obviously a tough decision to make.

I like his stuff.

Do you have any Cubs friends? I do, and no people who lose that much should be so arrogant. Therefore, I hope they lose forever.

Kennedy, Hughes, and Joba are scary good... but i don't think they'll be able to hang with the Sox, Tigers, and Indians

would you be willing to move Joba from the BP though? Relying on Farnsworth and Hawkins is risky business. I also feel you need to add the Angels to the list of teams the Yanks can't hang with.

I only have two Cubs friends and they are as far from arrogant as you can be. They are firmly planted in reality.

If Moose/Andy don't work, you can bet on Joba seeing some starts sooner rather than later.

The Yanks also like their younger middle relievers in Edwar Ramirez, Russ Olendorf (I think), and Brian Bruney. Obviously though, we've got no bridge to Mariano without Joba.

i was unaware of the younger guys being that close to ready. Torre loved having the 8th inning pre-closer for Mariano. Girardi could have a completely different outlook. One thing is sure, he has vastly superior knowledge on how to handle pitchers than I do. Posada is a great catcher but I'm sure he's learned A TON from Girardi.

I hate the Yankees with passion, but I'll admit if I'm deciding between Mattingly and Girardi to be my manager, I take Girardi everytime and I'm not even counting Mattingly's off the field family issues and what not.

On a side note: Posada came up while Girardi was still catching so I don't know if you're saying he learned a lot from Girardi as a manager, but he's been good because of the fact he learned from Girardi in the first place.

That being said, when Torre was on the verge of getting canned, I maintained that the only way I'd accept the move is if they brought in Girardi afterwards. Let's see if that works out.

I'd say every manager loves to have the dominant 1-2 punch in the 8th and 9th. Girardi was bench coach under Torre after all so I'd say they won't be too different, aside from the fact Girardi won't blow out pitchers' arms like Torre did.

i meant he's learned a lot the entire way. in close situations a number of managers will bring in the lefty/right specialists in the eighth. Of course a number of managers don't have two essential closers at their disposal.

Ok, I see what you're saying. Torre only did that with Papi at the plate with Mike Meyers. But yeah, that's been the front office's MO since they had Wettland and Mo back in the 90s. To be sure, it's the only way I'd go.

Shelly Duncan still can't understand why anyone thought his slide was dirty, i mean, who wouldn't go spikes first into the second baseman's thigh after the ball was clear by a longshot? After he had said that the Yanks would be getting payback? The same guy who yelled 'Sieg Heil" on TV during a victory celebration?

It seems that when Torre left, the Class that was once the organizations calling card left too. Jeter and Posada are now the lone "Traditional Yankees" on the Bad News Bears.
