Jakobe Thomas Transfers to Vols

Don’t disagree with the facts, Martinez has guys in the NFL. But he’s also been coaching for like 30 years. Anybody around that long is going to put some guys in the league.
My frustration with him has more to do with poor tackling and soft/no coverage when we are in zone. Those aren’t scheme or talent issues, that’s getting your guys ready to play and making sure they know what to do.
You think he’s teaching them not to tackle? 😂 I think a lot of this is more to do with talent than teaching. Tackling is one of the most fundamental skills, I doubt seriously Martinez is teaching them poor tackling. If you want to complain about technique when the ball is in the air I’m right there with you but from what you’re describing it sounds like you have more issue with scheme we’re in which is on banks. Reason we’re in that scheme is bc we have guys that are slow as molasses in coverage.

Banks has been given a short deck. This year, however, will tell the tale in my opinion.
Based on the number of guys who have left and who, so far, we’ve picked up, I want to argue he’s going in with a much shorter deck than he had this year. I’m happy about this pick up, but the secondary for next year is still my biggest concern.

Again, getting transfers from MTSU, is not adding the level of talent needed to compete with UGA and Bama. We've got to do way better than this in acquiring talent in order to compete for championships. Our staff and our NIL Collective ain't getting the job done. If we keep on at the current level, we will remain a mediocre 8-4 to 9-3 ceiling program.

Dude you are clueless...plenty of big time schools had offered him

Thomas chose Oregon State over offers from Auburn, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Louisville, Ole Miss and others.

You do realize that MOST of the players that transfer do so not because of talent level, but because they had to start out at a lower level school for many different reasons such as grades, family life, etc.
Thomas is on record as saying that UT was always his goal as far as playing college ball...for what ever reason (grades, coaching turmoil, etc.) it didn't make sense for him at that time to start his career as a VOL, but I'm sure glad he'll end it as a VOL.

None of those schools, are Bama, UGA, or Ohio State. We need to start getting the same caliber of players as UGA and Bama if we are ever going to compete for championships again. We need to start doing whatever it takes to to get those kind of guys. You are the one who is clueless if you think we are going to start competing regularly with UGA and Bama by getting MTSU transfers.

Filling holes with a couple of high value transfers is a perfectly valid use of the portal. You act a if we're filling the team with them which is a ridiculous stance

I don't even know why I bother any more with people like that.

So we got a transfer from MTSU and got another kid away from the claws of the Memphis Tigers.

I just need time to digest all this excitement.....

WM isn't the problem the talent is. WM has developed several guys that are playing or have played in the NFL. Our roster was depleted and the staff has been here 3 years. They still need time to get a couple of positions up to speed. If you don't agree name one secondary player that would start at any top 15 program.
Well who's job is it to bring in better talent haha??

I mean one way or another it will fall back to the coaches

That transfer is seasoned. He has game experience and has played against good competition like UGa. He'll be more than serviceable for us. I'm mean how much worst could our DB's play?

I agree with that 100%. But we have recruited some positions good over the 2 or 3 years they've had. The secondary position we will know more about the recruiting this next season with the guys brought in

Do a quick google search on the TWO starting safeties for the Philadelphia Eagles and where they played college ball.

Turrentine will be a starter next season coming from Ohio State. If the staff offers D-1 transfers like Thomas, I would not worry about whether they are from MTSU, Oregon State or from Bama or Georgia. There is much more evaluation film and less risk from the portal than high school so adding select guys via the portal is a solid strategy.

In this "new" SEC, that might be a tougher ask than any of us would like to consider.

Swimming in the same recruiting waters with bama, uga, auburn, florida doesn't bode well for doing that. They'll get the kids they want. We'll have to do a great job of evals and doing more with less. This is where I thought our "system" would be something of an equalizer. Hope this year was the exception and not the rule.

Dude, stop. I am normally pretty supportive of coaches, particularly the Heupel regime, but WM has been bad long before this stent at Tennessee. I've thought Martinez was garbage since Cutcliffe sliced and diced his defense at UGA in 2006 and 2007. All the tell tell signs, giving too much cushion, DB's not playing the ball, looking totally unprepared, are all trademarks of his coaching at every stop he has had. He must be a helluva nice guy though.
This is first I have heard about the heart issue.
