Jalen Hurd potential

I played RB half of my entire life till 10th grade, then for my whole entire rest of my life I played mainly defense. For a quarter of my entire life before my life as a 10th grader I did play RB though.

Lol. I stopped after 2004. Ha. That did sound silly how I said that.

Because, after several years of not signing any elite running backs which has led to a very pedestrian stable of running backs, we finally signed one of the best, most dynamic RBs in the country to fill a huge need.

Add to that the fact that the only other rb we have signed, who is more an all-purpose back and will more than likely not be ready in the fall, a lot of us on here are incredulous as to why everybody seems to want him to or project him to play a different position than the one that he is GREAT at and the one position where we desperately need him?

We have TEs in Helm and Wolff, we have WRs in Pearson and Malone, we have safeties in TKJr and McDowell, we have OLBs in Bates and Weatherd..... we desperately need Hurd playing RB.

Needing him at RB has really nothing to do with whether he will make a great one or would not be better suited to play another position.

I am not projecting him to do anything. My direct knowledge of him is limited to a little bit of the game he played against Malone on tv and his highlight videos. In that limited viewing, he was not particularly physical or laterally quick. I hope he is the next great UT RB but do not think it is a given that he ends up at RB.

We need a great running back. He has been evaluated by virtually everyone as a great running back. That's all I'm saying. To my knowledge he's never played nor has he ever been evaluated as a TE or WR or LB. I'd take my chances with him at running back where it's universally accepted that he's an elite player.

your talking an Eddie George redo. I hope so. I'd say we will know by the end of the Oklahoma game. He will be a shoe in to start.

Don't start arguments over the littlest things. It's nonsense. I know what I am talking about, I been through all of this stuff. Some guys run faster in the game then what they r timed, some guys don't run as fast as they r clocked. I was clocked a 4.6 at the combine, on the field I wasn't going to get caught period. So I ran faster in game. What I am saying is that he is fast.i have seen him play in person. On the field he doesn't run faster than cordarelle patterson. But he is a homerun back when he gets through the second tier. When he played ensworth, a private school, I could judge his talent better. He had a pretty decent game but didn't out run every person on the field....He is a freak of an athlete and will be a team changer if he runs with leverage. He runs high right now. But coaching will fix that. Out of everything I said y on earth would we try to make something negative about what I said.

I expect him to be great and agree he's a great athlete, but don't get hopes too high. He will definitely be a huge improvement.

The bolded part is true though. You'll hate to hear it, but I think everyone in tennessee that follows sports knows Ensworth. They recruit and they are darn good. Hurd didn't look like an all star when they matched up. I follow both schools as I'm in middle tn. He looked like a serviceable back when put against a team full of recruits.

You two have been officially suspended from posting on this thread anymore. The amount of idiocy that we've all endured reading your responses have made us all a little more

Smart guys, Beech has never played Ensworth, and furthermore, no one stopped J Hurd last year. The only game that he didn't absolutely kill it was the WC game (when he got hurt).

Y'all do remember he set a state record (3,357 yards) against all 5A & 6A teams? No team made him look like a "serviceable back".

I do not understand people complaining about having an instate 5* recruit who could have gone to ANY school he wanted to, but chose UT...

Neither do I. Add why do so many want a top 5 national rb playing another position when we badly need a top rb.... can't figure it.

I happend to have played running back my whole entire life until bout 04'.I know a thing or two. I Just gave an analysis. This is a message board, open to opinions. You don't like my opinion that is fine, but don't call me a clown. That is something I am not. I am not taking that disrespect fom anyone. I put in a lot of blood and tears.

Hmmmm...4.6, 4th round, '04...I'm thinking there's no way you're actually who you're letting on you are...but anyway...

Clock timing or not, Jalen Hurd looks plenty fast in the highlight reel I've seen. Whatever the level of competition, I think it says something when you keep out running everyone on the field, even smaller guys who have an angle. It seems like he gets to the speed he needs to get to to outrun the defense, and that seems more relevant than any clock time, i.e. what does he do when he's got pads on and someone is chasing him.

Like my favorite Vol running back of all time probably wasn't the fastest guy on the field when we played Florida in 2001, certainly not by clocked times anyway, but it seemed like no one could catch him.

My main concern with Hurd is how he will fit in this offense Butch and Bajakian want to run. He seems like a runner who needs to hit the hole fast, maybe make one cut and go, whereas what I saw this year, we would waste time in the backfield with the QB holding the ball/"reading the defense" before handing it off and then there were so many plays that seemed designed to run toward the sideline/around the edge, that sort of read option+lateral run game doesn't seem suited to Hurd's skillset and I wonder about how Bajakian/Jones can or will adjust for him (since there didn't seem to be much in the way of effective adjustments for personnel this season).

Just like he saw Beech play against Ensworth. Wouldn't really feed into anything this guy writes.

One last question...do you have a relative who used to benchpress Buicks and spin police cars with his bare hands...whilst dunking basketballs and guarding opposing power forwards at 5"9?

Only thing I'm concerned about is how we use him in our offense. We run a spread and I feel like he would thrive more in a power run game. But I do think he's going to be a star here.

J-Train?!

Nah. Jabari Davis wasn't drafted and I don't think he was invited to the combine (and he wasn't #34).

Too bad. I remember when we signed him. I thought he was going to be a monster for us (at least he was in the 03 Florida game). He was certainly a highly thought of recruit. I always felt we under utilized him or didn't play to his strengths. Hopefully the same won't be said of Hurd.

I always like Davis, tough runner...And he wasn't 34?! I would've bet the farm he was haha

Yeah, you're right he was 34. My bad on that one. But he wasn't 34 his freshman year, right?

Now that you say that I think you're right...I have enough trouble remembering what happened yesterday, much less a decade ago! haha.

Who do you think the guy is alluding that he is then?

*EDIT*
After quick google search he used 31 for at least one year.

Vol34 has said that he was drafted in the 4th round, ran a 4.6 at the combine, and stopped playing around 2004. That only fits one Vol that I am aware of (and he was wearing 34 Jabari's freshman year).

Ahh...not sure why I thought Davis before Stephens...

I guess I overlooked the Drafted in the 4th round part.

I honestly don't think people on here realize the potential Jalen has.

I state he is 212 for a reason but another post states he's 220 to 230. Either way, his frame is massive, and he could easily gain another 25-30 pounds of muscle without even looking like a body builder.

I don't know if he will end up at rb, and honestly don't care. He's gonna be a stud wherever he lines up. We are lucky to have him.

But the kid is gonna truck some people.

There is not a linebacker in the SEC who is gonna to want to tackle this guy 30-50 times a game. He's going to wear people down. His natural size alone is going to cause him to fall forward a few yards every time he is hit.
