Jason Shay resigned at ETSU

If you owned the team and the player agreements allowed it, then you'd certainly have that right; but that's changing the subject. We were talking about it being a political act or not, and that has nothing to do with what you'd enforce as an owner.
Again, I consider it an apolitical action that should cross party lines.

If sports are supposed to be non political then why do we play the anthem at every single freaking sporting event
Because way back when it was a sign of unity and national pride. When wars and whatever else was going on sports were a way to escape those things.
I'm in the same boat though at this point I wish it would quit being played but then you open up a whole other can of worms.
The left saying they did this to silence us and the right pissed off and blaming the left for getting it stopped. It's a no win situation.

It’s apparent we are never going to agree on this. The flag should unite all US citizens regardless of political parties or social differences.

No we aren't; and it's not helping that you keep making statements like this that aren't indiciative of the actual specific topic of specific behavior that is being discussed. I don't disagree with the bolded....but for about the 3rd time that's not what we're discussing.

Part of me thinks the kneeling was used as cover to force out a coach for free because he wasn’t winning. I kind of doubt this happens if ETSU is 22-3 this year instead of 13-12. Winning cures all, as they say...

This I agree with; just like Pruitt's activities would have been a nothing burger if we went 8-2.

I’ll try not get too much into politics but I was raised to take my hat off and stand up for the National Anthem.

Maybe I’m not cut out for this new generation. Oh well.

I was too. I’m the son of a 20 year military vet.

Doesn’t mean my old man (who I love dearly and just hung out with last night) is right about everything.

That’s probably the case

I agree completely Chris - if your employer is asking you to do things against your values then it’s time to find a new job. It appears Shay’s employer was asking him to separate his politics from his employment in this case? That seems a reasonable request to me. Now these employers who want to punish individuals who express their views on different topics while on their own time seems unAmerican. I’m employed to do a job for you, you don’t own me in the rest of my life

It's more than that. There are two important things at play: one on the human side and one on the business side. First, Shay has relationships with his players. It's normally kind of like a father/son type relationship along with the coach/player relationship. It's more than just "political views." Just like other relationships that can enrich your life, you enjoy their company, and you talk to your players to understand their worldview. A coach is not a robot who just has one job to do. Second, by supporting your players and understanding their concerns, it also helps you in recruiting when players know that, you, as the coach has their back. Not supporting your players can have ramifications later as you continue building a program.

You can not like kneeling for the flag and be totally appalled that Jason Shay may have been forced out for this reason. I don't see those as mutually exclusive.

No. The question of SHOULD people do that. Yes absolutely. We do not want a government, or you, deciding what I MUST do in those types of circumstances.
We never had a government mandate to stand and honor the flag and I’m not saying we should have one now. Now what a team owner or college administration decides is a totally different story.

That’s what I’m discussing.

Yes....IN A SPECIFIC WAY. You are dictating that standing and putting your hand over your heart is THE approved way to honor the flag and everyone should do it and those who don't are disrespectful. And you're saying that stance is non-political.

JFC.

I mean so was I, and I still do. Grew up an Army brat, and now both of my brothers serve. Others weren't raised that way, or grew up and found out they didn't care about the symbolism as much, and so they don't. That is part of the beauty of America, the government can't compel anybody to perform any sort of patriotic ritual if they don't want to. The people banging the drum the hardest for individual liberty lose that zeal when people (often black people) want to exercise that liberty in ways that upset their sensibilities. Kneeling before the anthem is protest, undoubtedly peaceful protest, and everyone should want to protect people's right to peaceful protest

Oh 100%. Don't know if that makes it better or worse though

I was too. My parents raised me to put my hand on my chest and remove my hat every time the national anthem came on and I still do. But I don’t understand what you mean by you don’t belong in this generation? Generations are a big and vague group and it’s quite normal to feel different. I sometimes fit in better with my older coworkers than some of the younger ones.

The generation I grew up with, there was no such thing as banning Dr. Seuss books, tearing down/removing statues, removing TV shows off the air because it was considered “racist”.

I get along with everyone no matter what your skin color is. I just never thought this country would get to this point where kneeling has become a common thing.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this but what can I do.

You ever stopped to think why that was? And why it's changing? And that this goes well beyond just you "getting along" with people?
