Jeff Walz not coming

Some of you are acting like the jilted lover who, when turned down by their paramour, start looking for reasons why you didn't want them anyway. That's fine with us, we'll keep him.

Oh sweetie....keep telling yourself that.

Tennessee never wanted him. Tennessee never contacted him. If anyone is the jilted lover, it's Jeff. Actually, to be a jilted lover, you had to be wanted at one time. He tried THREE times and never even got a callback.

Walz was a non-starter at UT, for multiple reasons. He was not going to coach the LVs, and that was top-down from the beginning.

DeMoss has been Fulmer's Cutcliffe to a few women's basketball coaches.
Very true but she sure knows how to coach...I wouldn't be mad....not sure if she wants to be a head coach anymore...Lord knows she could be if she wanted to.

Mickie doesn't want to be HC. At this point in her career, she likes being in an assistant role that's less stressful and time-consuming.

That must mean we didn't care about men's Bball when we hired Bruce Pearl?

I’m sorry, I agree with the general intent of your post, but, Ernie Grunfield was advising Hammy re Pearl. And Hammy was an idiot in that position so just be glad Ernie came up with someone cheap enough for him to agree to hire. And then say your thanks, that hammy, hart, cheek, currie, et al are gone (several with very nice “pay outs” after “resigning”).

MTSU did you see my question about Katie Meier? Surprised we haven’t heard her name. Happy at Miami? Waiting on duke?

Is it possible that the lady Vols ship is sinking faster and further than anyone on the outside is aware and that is why the choices are so limited? Maybe no one established wants to clean up the mess. Just a thought.

Maybe many of the established people have good situations. so the choices are limited.

I agree. If Holly had her on staff do you think she would have utilized her? That brings up another question. Was Warlick's staff subpar or did she not give them adequate freedom over their area?

What has she done at Miami that would make her a viable candidate at TN? Just wondering?

IMO she is not better than Holly.

I mean I’m not heavy and hot for her but she has built the Miami program up and shown an ability to beat the big dogs. One downside is she hasn’t punched through yet.

Record wise she may not be better than Holly but the trend certainly is. Frankly if Holly’s record is the standard to do better than I’m not sure why we fired her because the candidates we’ve seen mentioned are lackluster. As far as the comparison to KJH, Meiers ACC records blow hers out of the water—it’s an insult to Meier to even compare them.

From what I hear and it is only a rumor I heard but Micky and Holly do not like each other very much...Micky gave her the cold shoulder after a game this year so who knows?

So why do so many think Langley is better than Kellie. Langley was 0 and 3 versus ranked teams while Kellie was 3 and 4. Langley's head coaching record is 45 and 23 which is not a lot of experience. Last two seasons Kellie 46 and 22 so they are virtually the same coach with about the same kind of players with the same kind of results. I don't consider one better than the other. Neither has the resume of some other coaches that are available.

You want to hire somebody unknown that is winning what about Kim Stephens 55 and 8 in two seasons at Glenville State.

Kim Stephens - Women's Basketball Coach - Glenville State College Athletics Summitt was an unknown when she got the Tennessee job.

A lot of unknowns that haven't coached in the bigtime that could be given a shot. Are we going for unproven which would be Kellie, Langley and a lot of others or top coaches which would be names not on our list right now.
If you want to look at a lot of Coaches out there, I think Fulmer will explore his options. To say Kellie and Langley are virtually the same Coach, Kellie has 11 more years as head Coach, and has done well enough to be named Coach of the Year in 2 different conferences, not counting of course taking her mostly underclassmen, unrated recruits to the Sweet Sixteen this year.

Let's put it like this. If you're a coach like, let's say Matthew Mitchell, and you make $1.3 million a year at a major power 5 school with all the resources needed to compete for titles. What would you do?

Option A: Stay at Kentucky, make $1.3 million. In an above-average year, you finish 3rd in the conference, make the Sweet 16, and get a contract extension.

Option B: Go to Tennessee for $1.5 million. Go to the Elite 8 twice, the Sweet 16 once and you're on the hot seat because fans will compare your average year only to Pat's best. You don't make the Final Four in a four year stretch and people call for your job. IF you get an extension, people complain because you haven't done enough to deserve one.

Which option are you going to pick? 9 out of 10 coaches are going to pick A. This isn't the only program in America that will pay well and give a coach everything he or she needs to thrive anymore. Better hope #10 ends up being a winner.
