Jeronne Maymon update

RT @BFQuinn: Cuonzo Martin said he will sit down with Jeronne Maymon and team doctors in January, decide on 2012-13 Statius. Redshirt is a possibility.

RT @BFQuinn: Martin said if it came down to Maymon returning for just the last month of season, he'd hold him back. "I wouldn't do that to Jeromne."

"No decision has been made ... right now. We’ll figure out the best-case scenario for Jeronne Maymon, first and foremost." - Cuonzo Martin

"I don’t want to make a premature decision and give you a (decision) date. I’d just be lying at this point." Cuonzo Martin on Jeronne Maymon

I actually think that it's not all bad news. I'm tired of not having a national championship by our name. Maybe it's me living in KY and that's all I hear about, but I'm tired of it. In the next few years, our best chance at a national championship is next year, with Maymon, and Stokes coming back. I want a full season of Maymon being healthy and in his best shape. There is no way he is in any shape to play 20+ min a game this year.

Very much expected and I'm even more glad Martin is a quality man. A lot of coaches could care less about burning a season of elgibility for a kid if it helped the team. Glad to see him put the player first. I would imagine Maymon's rehab is going decent and he'll probably be ready before the season's over but it's better for him and us (in the long run) to come back next season.

So can this stop the, Maymon to go NBA or Europe chatter please???

If Maymon was going to do this there's no reason to worry about sitting down and redshirting him, you just go on about your business. Sounds to me either jeronne is coming back this year or will be back next year.

And seeing as how really February is the last month of college ball, Martin is saying if he'll only be back for February he won't bring him back. That means he'd need to be playing in January, and seeing as how he still can't run I'm seeing that as not being very likely.

Actually February isn't the last month.
March and February would be 11 games, then post season.
Doubt he's writing off an early Feb return.

"He's open to everything," Martin said. "One thing about Jeronne, he's a coachable guy. He wants to do what's best for the team. If that means coming back, he'll come back. We're trying to figure out what's best for Jeronne Maymon first and foremost, then our team."

Asked if there's a specific cut-off date for when it's worth using Maymon's final year of eligibility, Martin said, "I don't want to make a premature decision and give you a date. I'd just be lying at this point. I wouldn't be 100 percent accurate."

Yep.

I think the writing is on the wall. Wouldn't surprise me if it's announced in the next few weeks that Maymon will RS and come back next year. I think it would make the most logical sense for all parties involved anyway.

Hopefully Reese gets cleared for full contact soon because we're going to need his size and length at the 4 spot as this season progresses.

I think we'll be alright this year. He really needs to take the redshirt and come back next year. That team could be scary good, if Stokes doesn't go pro, which seems to be the consensus opinion that he won't right now...

I'm aware there's games in March, but at this point only 4 are guaranteed. 2 regular season march games, and a SEC tourney game, that's all so I wasn't really including march.

But technically, last game regular season is march 9, so last month would be February 9th. So if taking Martin literally that he wont bring him back for the last month Maymon would have to be playing by February 9th. Seeing as how he still is having trouble walking without crutches, and can't run, I have a hard time thinking hell be hitting the practice floor in 19 days(January 9th). Once he hits the practice floor he needs to obviously condition like crazy, and get back into the swing of things knocking off the rust.

If I was betting I'd lay good money that he doesn't play this season, would you go the other way?

Doesn't sound like a guy contemplating jetting for NBA or Europe.

There are 3 scheduled games in March,. 8 in February.
No. I don't think he'll play this season.
From what I read, still not sure about next season though.

Yea I meant 3 scheduled, that's why I said 4 total.

What did you read that implied he's contemplating Europe or the NBA?

Martin flat out said..."if coming back is the best thing for the team that's what he'll do".

Did you read the entire article?
Said they'd sit down with Jerrone, FAMILY, doctors and staff and decide what's best for Jerrone.
Martin is an honest man, whose career was shortened by leg problems.
If asked, do you think he's going to say, play another year for the team or is he going to say, you're likely going to have a short pro career, get what you can out of it while you're healthy.
Remember what's best for Jerrone. Not me. Not You. Not UT.

Did Martin jet early or stay and get his degree?

Once again, I'd lay big money that if Maymon doesn't play this year hell be at UT next year, would you go the other way?

I really don't think the money in Europe is so good that a year missed or gained makes that big a difference. Especially if his first year overseas is one coming off a season long knee injury. He would be lucky to get into one of the middle of the pack leagues and they don't really pay that much when all is said and done.

Actually got his degree shortly before he started as an assistant under Keady. So jetted I guess.
I'm in the middle right now. Waiting to see what comes from the sit down.
Austin taught me that.

If he has an opportunity to play professionally, it will be more money than if he stayed in school.

Playing in a middle tier Euro league is still 200K USD tax free with all living expenses covered. If he plays well, it's up from that.

Unless his knee is more healthy than it seems, it would make more sense to finish the degree.

Tax free? You crack me up.

Never heard about the tax thing but he could make some serious money playing overseas. I don't know how his family life is or expenses so it's hard to say. Won't he pretty much be done with his degree this season anyways?
