Jim McElwain has been fired (confirmed)

What's the /cause/ of the firing of McElwain? I gotta believe he's going to be getting some buyout money. And, by the way, he was 16-6 in the SEC.

Apparently coaching contracts are written so that you can't fire someone for not getting the job done - but false statements are another thing. So in the end it's a little like driving a car with a broken headlight; you can get away with that - but having pot on board changes things.

You might get away with incompetence if you don't do something stupid. Getting rid of an under-performing coach and saving a few million is just too good a bargain to pass up.

Mullen will not go to Florida unless they pull up the Brinks truck. He turned them down before. Why would he now come into a situation where they ran off a coach after back to back division championships? He would be scared to death to walk into that. He would want a 20 million buyout.

I mostly lurk around, But I wanted to give this a response. He turned us down last time because Foley was the AD and Foley and Mullen do not get along at all. I believe since he has a relationship with Stricklin that it is a possibility. Just have to wait and see.

Wow. Just read McElwain's buyout will only be 4 million. Cited the way he disclosed death threats and ties to other agents as the reason. That's an insanely good deal for UF.

Yes, Scott Stricklin is coming off very well so far. If he lands a Scott Frost, and Frost is indeed a young Urban Meyer, the dude will become a legend.

Because Mullen is a much better football coach then Mac

He can actually fix the offense and develop quarterbacks not to mention that offense he runs fits Fla athletes perfectly

His first year on the job under urban he had the offense balling

Matt Corral could be great in that system imo

I follow UF about as closely as possible. When did Mullen turn down UF? Answer, never. Former AD Foley did not like him, that’s common knowledge and widely reported. UF never offered Mullen so much as an interview.

Now Stricklin seems to have a better relationship with Mullen, so Mullen becomes a possibility.

To say Foley and Mullen don't get along is like saying North Korea and South Korea have a minor difference of opinion on trivial matters.

Why has Mullen stayed in Starkville so long? He has had plenty of offers to coach better programs than MSU. Why? Because he is comfortable at MSU. I do not think he wants a big time job. I don’t think he wants the pressure. If you guys do get him I believe he will have less success than Mac did his first 3 years.

Honestly I hope he is the guy. I would rather you guys get him than Frost or Kelly.

He was holding out for UGA job. That’s his dream job and It was clear Richt was on his way out after 2013 season.

I hope Curry don't listen to this thread. Gruden is a joke! Has he ever won a NC in college? He is not Nick S. He is not in the top 10 coaches in the nation. Fla. will not hire him. He would love that job. But he wont get it.

Gruden works part time and is paid more than 98% of college coaches. You think he's gonna throw that away to come babysit?

Yeah. Mac made big mistakes by not reporting such threats to UF and then later talking about them to the media. This article explains it pretty well.

Report: Jim McElwain may get just $4 million, not full buyout - Alligator Army

If that was the case they wouldn't be paying him anything. They certainly didn't fire him with cause yesterday, maybe they agreed to a preliminary figure but no that statement basically rules out they get to pick the amount of salary - there is either an agreement in principle or there isn't.

Florida officials believe it could fire McElwain with cause, nullifying the buyout completely. UF believes it shouldn’t have to pay McElwain "anything" because he withheld claims about death threats from university officials.

Obviously, with the statement yesterday they didn't have cause. If they have "cause" than their fiduciary duty to the school and probably the State would also be an issue as they shouldn't be paying anything - which is why LSU had to go sue Chavis. The statement by the Florida AD really makes little sense, meaning you can't say you have cause than you pay him.

If Florida can use that leverage to reduce its obligation to McElwain to just a few million dollars — effectively firing him with cause while throwing in a year’s salary — then the Gators will have performed some enviable boardroom wizardry.
What does this even mean, I thought Florida had an agreement in principle? Either you have an agreement or you don't. The article is poorly written and really makes less sense than the Florida AD.

He has coached his last game at Florida. Randy Shannon is interim coach.

Here’s how this works;

Florida: we are firing you ‘with cause,’ we don’t intend to honor the buyout.

Sexton (Mac’s agent): we want full buyout.

Florida: we won’t pay full buyout. Our lawyers will be in touch.

Three weeks later; a negotiated settlement is reached and all parties part ways.

More like three hours later...which speaks volumes.

Why would Mullen want to go to Florida? I am not saying he won't, but why?

Mullen makes more than Florida's Shark Lover and he really doesn't have to win. Mississippi State is happy if he is bowl eligible 3-4 years out of 5... they knock off LSU every 5 years or so, or win 9 games every 3-5 years. He really doesn't have to win year in or year out and he collects a big check and doesn't have to worry about an insane school doing insane things like say trying to get out of a contract.

Jimbo and Mullen have great gigs. Exactly how much would Florida offer him to pick up and leave Mississippi, what is Mullen's buyout? Is Mullen really going to be interested in going to Florida while Florida is trying to get out of paying the last coach while paying the coach before that?

Maybe he feels he has accomplished what he can at Miss. State and wants a more difficult challenge (e.g. win a National Championship)? Sure, he could try and do it at Miss. State but the chances are higher at UF. He's 45 now which seems like a good time to make a final move in the college head coaching business.

Compromise is easier and a lot of time less costly than proving cause.

really impressed the AD's press conference. said a lot, w/out saying much directly if you're paying attention.

if i were a FL fan, i'd have a good feeling about what will happen next.
