Jim Tressel (merged)

Tressel isnt a HR hire and were already on probation we dont need a HC that knows things are going on and looks the other way.

Actually he is a HR hire. He does have baggage and I can guarantee you that if he is given an opportunity here he would not only run a tight ship, put his heart and soul into the program, but he would actually win!

Next year is a throw away year anyway.

The man can win!

Ps his winning % is about 20-30% above Grudens.

Gruden's impact on recruiting will be about 100% above mistake prone Tressel

Comparing winning percentages from NCAA to the NFL is absurd.

Thank you. I don't know why there are so many people on this board who don't grasp this simple concept. If you want to compare Tressel's record to Gruden's you need to take out every game he played against a non-Top 25 team. That would be the equivalent of an NFL schedule.

Ohio boy here. i have sources, direct sources, won't say any more than that, the Tress has been approached by UTK or people representing UTK. Flame me, call me names, say what you want, it is fact. Where it is beyond that, I have no idea. This info came last night from a very trusted friend, who would not fudge this stuff, and who has direct access to JT.

I never knew Tressel coached in the pros. That's cool. I wonder why he doesn't go back there while he's waiting out his show cause.

It's odd that he's such a great candidate, but no one wants to hire him, whereas just about everyone wants to hire Gruden.

I agree! And that is my point.

Tressel has roots in the Midwest and he can pull recruites from there for sure.

If we get Gruden yes there may be a honeymoon spike in fan interest and recruiting... However, Gruden is unproven in recruiting HS age kids and he is unproven as a college HC....

Tressel is a proven winner who made a major mistake... But he can coach, he can and has won championships in college and would do a great job here.

Yes Gruden is a great hire as well...but he is my #2.

This also works in reverse. Moderate Success in the NFL does not mean overwhelming success in cfb

Tressel won in the Big ten because it is an easy conference.

Look at his record against SEC opponents and you will see a very bad record.

He lost to USCjr when they still had Holtz..enough said.

The bottom line is that we are at a crossroads with our Athletic department and our football program.

We are losing out on a lot of money because we have not been winning for several years. We are also losing out on the arms race in regards to facilities and perception.

The UTAD will have an extra $18-$21 million to use to hire the right coach and not settle for sloppy seconds and a slew of cheap B list coaches.

We must make the home run hire.

Gruden is on everyone's list. I would add Jim Mora, Jr, Jimbo Fisher, and Bob Stoopsd to the top of the list. Right under them I would have James Franklin and Al Golden as my fall back guys. If we cant land one of these guys, we are in trouble.

no Tressel. 2 out of 2 places "things" happen under his watch and TN sure cant afford any trouble.

Not going to flame you, but I am certain your sources (or your cources sources) are certainly wrong.

Tressel has a show-cause from the NCAA right now, and UT just got two more years of probabtion. If UT were to hire Tressel they would first have to get NCAA approval, and even then, if a recruit gets even just 1 text message at the wrong time, Tennessee will be facing a multi-year bowl ban.

It would be a HUGE risk for Tennessee to even try to hire Tressel, so his name is not in the conversation.

We just had more penalties come down and if Tressel was hired we would have to prove to the NCAA how we would keep him from screwing up again. That seems like a lot of work for someone who can't beat SEC teams seeing as we play in the SEC.

To some extent you have to look at what Nega is saying. He did well at Oakland then took Dungee's team to the SB. After that it kinda went in the toilet. Now, JG probably didn't have much say in the turnover on the team after the SB but boy he went downhill fast. I WANT a home run hire. I DON'T want to break the bank to get it. I DON'T want to see $8 hotdogs and $10 cokes to pay for something that is not much better than what we have now. It is going to be interesting here if Gruden doesn't come. Many will be on suicide watch.

I guess right now MY personal preference would be Stoops. JMO.....I think we would be getting a more proven college guy (80% winning percentage as a HC) that knows the SEC and what it would take to win here. Now, if a deal is already done, you can pretty much bet it isn't a current NCAA coach. UT talking to anyone still playing would have to go through too many channels to keep it under wraps. That would tell me that the only one that has really been approached is JG. I hope this isn't a monumental "being left at the altar" by JG cause that would put a huge negative stigma on the job that went just don't need right now.

Good points, TNGlen.

A lot of the people saying pay Gruden $8-$10 million per year are the same people who are going to complain about $10 cokes, and $150 tickets. The money has to come from somewhere and I promise the big boosters don't live to hand their money to a coach.

There are no Akron's, Toledo's, Colorado's, Illinois', nor Indiana's (like Tressel beat last year) in the NFL.
