jobless claims rise again

Given a choice of looking for a job to support my family in the way they are use to, or taking a Walmart job is not even a question for me. If I had to live off the government for awhile to obtain the former...I know what I would do.

But hey to each is own.

and sadly that's becoming the norm. There is no shame in doing that anymore. A job hunt is not a full-time job and you should not be paid as such. Without the crutch from the gov't more people would be employed right now

Man, I can't pull one over on you can I. The higher you are up on the pyramid the smaller the space. That's pretty widely known.

i've found exactly the opposite. the top people never are unemployed. it's the middle management and worker bees who have problems finding new jobs. there are only so many talented people in this world and those people will always find someone willing to hire them.

I can only assume that is what the guy holding the "anything will help" sign standing at the entrance of Walmart must be doing.

So you have more upper management positions at your company than worker bees?

relavance? obviously since there are less management positions there are less people working in said positions who would need to find employment if they were laid off.

You're the fundamental problem in this whole situation. You'd rather get a handout from the government than take a pay cut because of self pride and arrogance. You should be ashamed of yourself.

One great BIG PROBLEM... It isn't "your" own we're talking about when you draw a check for doing nothing rather than taking a lower job and making a contribution to the economy. It is OUR own... our money, NOT YOURS, NOT THE FEDERAL GOV'T's.

I would be ashamed of myself if I threw away a career that I spent 7 years in college to obtain.....

You're clueless man. There are plenty of people who have gotton laid off due to NOTHING of their own doing. The times suck and public companies have to provide value to shareholders meaning if they need to cut expenses then some good people might get the pink slip...

When good companies hire for positions like you think you deserve... who do you think will get picked up first: those who were industrious enough to take what was available and add to their skill set or those who sat on their duff adding to the economic burden that extended the recession?

You need to wise up and find a job.

Just a story then I'll quit.....20 years ago I got laid off. The company provided an outplacement center for the people it laid off. I stayed in the same car pool as I did when I worked and went to the center 5 days a week from 8-5. I treated it as a job. Things were pretty bad in the oil industry back then, it took me five months, but I got two offers. Becuase of that I have worked another 21 years in the oil industry, or perhaps I should have ran down to the local Walmart and applied. Also because of that, Uncle Sam has collected alot of more money from me than if I had taken the Walmart position. So heck no, I won't ever feel guilty about that. I did the right thing for my future and my family. However, you do whatever the heck you want if you ever get laid-off.

agreed. it's proven fact it's far easier to get a job if you already have one. 6 months of unemployment on your resume doesn't look good.

Ahhhhh. I have a job. Who said I didn't?

I worked with some out placement experts about 20 years ago, they told me that on average it takes about 1 month to find a job for every 10,000 you make in annual base salary. For instance, a guy making $30,000/year can expect a 3 month search. I found this to be pretty accurate with the people I know working in the oil biz.

I got laid off last February for no reason of my own. The company hired lots of people expecting to grow their market share and then the economy went in the tank.

While unemployed I never applied for unemployment and worked literally 10 hours a day looking for a job. I found a much better postion and increased my salary by 14K in under 1 month and had 3 other offers I had to turn down.

I guess that kinda hurts your average above. I guess I'm just that good.

i see. so you had some plush union job and got another one. how is this an example for others to live by? and you couldn't have applied to those other jobs while working at walmart? from 8-5 you were submitting resumes and interviewing huh?

it's also being said by many places that people without jobs are not being considered anymore

Yes because working at Wal-Mart as a stop gap till you find another job would totally consume all your time and you would never have off days or hours off during the day to look for another job. Please...

Any professional outplacement individual will tell you that finding a job is a full time job. If you don't believe me than ask one. If you are doing something else, than you delaying your next offer.

PS. I am not in a union, and I would never consider being in one. That's one thing you and I apparently agree on.
