Joe Milton 2.0 (merged)

Nico will probably be fine but he has to get much better at making plays when the blocking breaks down. He definitely needs to learn to count the number of defensive players at the line pre-snap to anticipate blitzes better. That is coaching. This far into his time here he should already be aware of this. There's lots of game film to watch. It's not just playing time.

He probably knows those things but is having a hard time processing the speed of the SEC. He'll improve

Nico and Joe are both very talented QB prospects. Joe is on his way to a successful career in the NFL. The problem is the coaching and play calling, not the players. I think there are personnel issues on the offensive unit, primarily along the offensive line, but I don't think we lack for talented quarterbacks. I think that was the worst called game of the heupel era.

Half of the threads on this site last year was folks wanting to see Nico play more, ( since we had lost enough games to be out of the play off picture ) How much better would Nico be this year if he'd been given more playing time ?
Wouldn't have hurt to have gotten more playing time this year. Lol, maybe we should have put in our 2nd and 3rds last night.

Several times they were snapping the ball with 20 plus seconds ion the play clock.
Exactly. It was mind-numbing to watch it in real time. It's like the fanbase watching were the only ones who recognized that the UT defense was not going to stop Arkansas at all and needed to consume the clock.

I told some friends who were watching the game with me, if the game came down to Nico winning it, it wasn't going to happen. I seen enough to know that. Defense and the running game were all we had to win that game last night.

Heupel addressed that directly. It was a mistake. When asked about Joe vs Nico, he again addressed it directly, "Different situations and different experience from the QBs...." mentioning something about the difference in college experience. He said Nico knew it, acknowledged it, and felt bad about it.

What else can we want? Blood from the kid?

He knows he screwed up.
Coach knows he screwed up.
We know he screwed up.

There's no rewind. My hope is that Nico can realize he has a long time to play football and that was just one play in his career.

I’m not sure benching Nico is the answer considering a walk-on and true freshman sit behind him. The OL and conservative playcalling are abysmal.
I’m looking forward to McIntyre and Faizon getting on campus. At the moment, neither QB 2 or 3 are putting any pressure on Nico to improve. He doesn’t fear losing his starting role. I’m not sure how much film Nico watches either. It seems as if he doesn’t watch much because I’m not seeing progression but rather regression. I’m just not sure if Nico has the “it” factor. Maybe this loss will light a fire under his butt. We’ll see. Regardless, Nico should be feeling the heat at the moment, the desire to prove that he’s the guy everyone thought he was, and if he isn’t then he’s not the winner we all hoped he’d be.

WTF ! Who does that? Is there a QB coach on staff? Right up there with the QB a few years back who cost us a win at Alabama because he changed the play at the one yard line. Who's recruiting these guys? I mean, this loss could be taken much more in stride if the ball had been at least thrown, at least giving the team a chance, even if intercepted. I mean, I just sat staring at the screen in disbelieve. I have on seen something similar to that in a middle school game. WTH is going on at practices? That play, that last play was just humiliating, embarrassing and eye opening.
The play at Alabama didn't cost us the game

I'll say the same thing I said when Milton did it.
Sucks. but crap happens.NFL QB's have had brain farts and cost their team a game
Learn from it and move on

I sure hope there are some young men in the locker room who can settle them down and really provide some leadership. Way to much hype and pressure on Nico IMO...

Feels like we need to evaluate the route combos…. I didn’t see the underneath stuff you’d expect for a young QB, the easy win routes.

TE delays were comfy early on for him, need some of that back.

Heupel’s offense is all about space and pace…. So having the underneath routes from such wide splits takes time from the O line… looked like he had plenty of time. The routes were maybe 5 yards too deep and into the coverage vs in front of the coverage and receivers doing the work RAC wise.

some of you anointed him the savior and then you b*tch when a freshman can’t shoulder the weight of the world.
No. Some of the passes he missed on could have been game changing, which 80% of college qbs could have made. It's a hard pill to swallow but he's not who we thought he was. He's somewhere between JG and Milton. I honestly believe JG makes some of those throws last night.

In hindsight that play should have been set up like a hail mary - send a group of receivers to one place and just throw it there regardless and give a shot for it to be caught.

I think the crazy play on second down where the ball ended up in the running backs hands messed the rhythm up. We should have had four throws into the end zone.
