Joe Milton 2.0 (merged)

Man this is crazy. Qb will always get a lot of the blame when you lose. But Nico didn’t call 35+ inside runs tonight with the defense loading the box. Heupel all of the sudden wants to play that way. Bizarre. He acknowledged last week to Nico that he went ultra conservative because the defense was playing well. We saw more of that tonight. Content to punt across midfield on fourth and short and very few down the field shots. I thought Nico was pretty solid tonight with his decision making and accuracy. He probably should’ve thrown it into the end zone on that last play. But that’s a low percentage situation regardless.
Had we dialed up a handful of down the field shots, we probably would’ve never been in that situation.
We must not have watched the same game. Arkansas played 5 man box most the first half and the online couldn't do anything.

Green probably not with our online. Pittman definitely not. Heupel has a way of saving guys jobs.
True, I would not trade Nico or Josh for the Ark guys, but tonight they were better prepared and wanted the win more than TN did.

You're seriously going to throw the money thing around as if it has a shred of relevance?

I'm saying a first year QB who had five games under his belt is going to have some rough moments. It was a tough environment and he didn't play well. The OL wasn't good, we couldn't run the ball except for the one drive, and WR's were dropping like flies. He made a bad decision but had nowhere to go with the ball. Damn man, let the kid grow up

I think it's pretty funny that there was a thread that was wondering if our punter was having second thoughts about being here since he wasn't getting used very much. LOL. We are the worst fanbase in all of college football when we lose.
Our punter is awesome. Glad he’s here!

Fickle, there's a word.
fickle /fĭk′əl/

adjective

  1. Characterized by erratic changeableness or instability, especially with regard to affections or attachments; capricious.
  2. Not fixed or firm; liable to change; unstable; of a changeable mind; not firm in opinion or purpose; inconstant; capricious.
Fits this group perfectly. Tonight it highlights 'unstable'.

LOL

No they didn’t. I legit lauded the tv a handful of times. They were walking their lbs up on nearly every play. On at least half of our runs, they had 8 players within 3 yards of the los.

Yeah, I was going to say that 'unstable' is the part that fits best.

Where’s all those “WRs can’t separate because D is playing 8 back” members? The 3-3-5 D is not the VOL deep game issue.

Heupel has games where he goes into a shell. 2021 Ole Miss, 2023 Florida, 2024 Arkansas.

My theory is Golesh took his system and improved it. Much like Lincoln Riley did with Mike Leach's system.

Also part of it is people are expecting 2022 Hendon Hooker from a Freshman QB who has played 6 games ever

Maybe some expect that…I don’t. I’m talking about the offense as a whole since Golesh left. Looks different, far less imaginative and is no longer the aggressor in league games. We no longer look like we game plan to take advantage of oppositions weaknesses. We look content to get to 2nd & 7 or 3rd & 5 and hope to get to 4th & 1 before we stall out or kick a FG. It’s a jarring philosophy change

Nico is definitely struggling with being decisive. But it also seems like Heupel is babying him a little too much, which could be hurting him in the short term. He needs to cut Nico and the offense loose and let him make mistakes. If he throws a couple of interceptions so be it. That may actually allow a guy like Nico to play better. It just seems like to me that there’s a governor on the play calling to protect Nico from negative plays.

When Johnny Manziel won the Heisman as a freshman they just let him rip it and learn on the fly. Perhaps just a touch of that is in order here.

Agreed. We barely stack receivers. Barely run switch releases. We run the same 3 things over and over and then have no adjustments when they can take it away. We don't even really push the tempo anymore.

I wish people would leave Joe Milton alone. If you are just going to trash the players find another team to pull for.
I think Joe has a big ole orange heart. They way people on here talk about him, I have no idea why.

I love Joe Milton. I cheered for him as a VOL and I hope he gets a shot in the NFL. He’s just a great guy. Also has a hurricane named after him as of today! How cool is that.

This said, when you do something really stupid in life, it just may stick for awhile.

Yeah that hurricane is headed my way, although it will hit Tampa first. At least it isn't names Tebow.
