Joe Milton 2.0 (merged)

Agreed. We barely stack receivers. Barely run switch releases. We run the same 3 things over and over and then have no adjustments when they can take it away. We don't even really push the tempo anymore.
Yeah we don't seem to move as fast to the ball as we did.
It feels like we've gone to lets control the clock type play and just hold on to a small lead.
Almost as if Heupel took offense to his offense being called a gimmick so he went more traditional.
I don't know maybe today just wasnt the day for top ranked teams

I don't think that's an entirely wrong assessment.

Both have struggled to consistently be accurate on slants and screens. Nico blew multiple intermediate throws late that cost us the game:

* Underthrew multiple slants. 1 was caught, 1 got White a concussion and none were advanceable.

* Hold ball too long to throw deep because deep pass pretty

Arkansas' QB looked far better in every aspect and he is by all counts a very average QB.

Niko looked scared tonight playing with zero confidence. He had the deer in the headlights look all night long. We really miss Golesh badly. Stupidity is doing the same thing time after time and expecting different results.

No we made it a defense special teams and fg game… that’s not who CJH is as a coach we gotta go take the game we tried to back pedal into it… it’s multiple 4th downs we shouldve went for it and trust our defense if we didn’t make it.

There were a couple of 4th and shorts that we should’ve gone for. I believe you trust the stats at the point. Could’ve been the difference in the game. Bottom line, Arkansas had a great game plan and it worked. Gotta give Motorcycle Bobby some credit. He saved his boss’s butt for a few more games.

Nico ran out of bounds on the final play with no time on the clock. That’s the point of the thread. Joe was hammered mercilessly over that play.

Otherwise, I hang most of the loss to…
- Penalties (lack of discipline
- OL (where were they?)
- WRs (where were they?)
- Play calling (more quick crossing passes and more Bishop)

Poor decisions by both qbs in those instances, however, in both games we should’ve never been in those situations to begin with.

I see the cryasses are out.
Ok been reading off line for hours but had to log in to respond yo “cryasses”. I love it. I was pretty much a cryass all game long but not enough to throw Nico under the bus. IF Tn gets their **** together they might still have a chance at making some noise but i was convinced after watching how the team struggled overall in the wins against decent teams that their was problems. It wasnt dialed back it was “struggle”. It showed up big time last night. There are phases of this team that are nit good. Being the most undisciplined team i have ever witnessed in 40 years of watching UT football is probably the biggest area!! BTW i am cataloging “CRYASSES”. and putting it in my personal repertoire. Thank you.

Nico isn't throwing with any anticipation. That's a problem unless guys are wide open
i agree there but receivers also have to help him out a little more. In the 4th quarter they had 3 drops alone. Tough catches but ones you have to make. The one to Squirrel had to be caught, I know he get hurt. And then right after that he put one in Kitselman’s chest where only he could catch it

As a 5th year senior everybody knew what Milton's ceiling was, he pretty much reached his ceiling. AS a R-FR Nico's ceiling is much higher, it is up to him to learn from this game and put in the work to reach his ceiling. He is still a R-FR in his 6th game, but Ark put in a Fr QB that led a game winning TD Drive. Plenty of blame to go around bad play calling, weak o-line play, receivers not making plays, poor run game, but in the end Vols had a chance to win and Nico didn't get it done. The Vols needed him to go win the game and he failed.

What did Nico do so poorly? He didn’t turn the ball over and was accurate with most of his throws. We just didnt call enough down the field passes imo. I guess the quarterback always gets a lot of blame, but to me, it is the constant inside runs and willing to play a field position game that cost us tonight.

We started every drive…every single drive with a 3 yard Samson inside run even though they sometimes had 8 defenders within 3 yards of the LOS. No stretch Ron, no designed quarterback keepers just Jeremy Pruitt style. We are going to run right into the teeth of the defense even when they’re selling out to stop it.
He missed at least 6 throws. Even on the big play late, if he doesn't throw it behind the WR, it's a TD

I do not think for a moment Nico is in the same class as Milton. Nico has some abilities that Milton did not have. I think the whole problem is coaching and scheming. I think the "Heupel Offense" was really the Golesh offense and what we have now is some kind of off-chute of that offense that is less effective. All night long, I was screaming at the tv and wondering where the receivers were; where the tight ends were; and what blocking scheme was being employed by the O-Line. On several occasions, the backs were missing their blocks, completely whiffing, or releasing engagement too early. The best this team is capable of is 9-3. I potentially see 8-4 if coaching can't straighten this up. And the O-Line is a definite problem with teams that have the ability to rush the QB. They are going to struggle.

He's definitely not playing with confidence right now, to say the least. It's not all on him, but he hasn't helped himself either. The play at the end of the game really makes me wonder though. At a crossroads for sure already in his career.

Rolling left as a righty with pressure a 60 yard laser and you making it like a bad throw ? Lol the more miss was 87 the next play but all in all CJH has much more blame than Nico for me.

What we do know is Coach Heupel needs to run that game scenario at the beginning, and at the end of each practice until it's impossible for a Vol QB to ever make that mistake again.
