Joel Klatt says Vols might be left out playoffs for Bama

The head of the CFP Committee already ruled this out. Said no team that isn't playing this weekend is going to shift in comparison to any other team that isn't playing this weekend. The relative positions of these teams are fixed:

- Notre Dame
- Ohio State
- Tennessee
- Indiana
- Alabama
- Miami.

Now, teams like Penn State, Georgia, SMU, Boise St, and even Oregon and Texas could move around among that skeleton. But relative to each other, Tennessee and Bama aren't moving. They will remain at least two spots below us, with Indiana (and perhaps one or two others) in between.

Go Vols!

Again, that’s not statistically possible. You can’t leave half of the field static while not punishing teams that lose a conference championship game. There are teams currently not in the top 12 who could play their way into it which means that a team or teams currently in the top 12 would have to drop out. Consequently, if Clemson beats SMU, they wouldn’t magically jump 9 spots to take SMU’s spot at number 8 so that would have to reorder the back end of the playoff because Arizona State is at 12 and would be an automatic qualifier. Boise State is number 10 and UNLV is number 20, they wouldn’t jump 20 spots to number 10 either so a team currently in the top 12 would be out which again would reorder the bracket positions just like a three loss Georgia wouldn’t stay at number 5. They are talking out of both sides of their mouth to appease everyone before releasing the final rankings

Who knew Klatt had a podcast?
Toddlers toss toys for attention.
Podcasters toss bad takes for attention.
Both should be ignored or put in time out.
I certainly didn’t know. Never listened or read anything from him. And if he said that, now I know why. Not worth paying attention to. No chance UT gets bumped by anybody.

Bama better pray that SMU beats Clemson. If Clemson wins, I believe they may leave SMU in and bump Bama out despite the heat Greg Sankey will bring. If they truly mean that playing in the championship games shouldn’t affect things, they won’t drop SMU totally out. If SMU loses and they drop totally out, the whole system looks foolish and if I was a team in that position, I’d have to really consider if I wanted to go to a championship game in the future if it endangered a playoff berth. It will be interesting to see what happens.

You’re not understanding his post correctly. Key word is “relative”.

It's actually surprising to me that this line of thinking is not more commonplace. UT's resume is not that impressive. Managed to avoid Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss and USC. Played most of the bottom feeders in the SEC and lost to one of them. Best win is over a team that NOBODY on this forum wants in the tournament because they are not worthy. And got stomped by UGA. What separates UT from Miami? SMU? Head to head does give them a slight edge over Bama although Bama has much better wins than UT. Everything is so subjective.

Mods, please ban this obvious Bammer troll. Guess what, dumbass: we beat you. You lost to two teams that we dominated. Please take a very long walk off a very short pier.
Yes please to what @Vol in Buckeye Land said.

I was listening to the Joel klatt podcast and in last nights episode he said if Clemson beats SMU that SMU would stay in and Vols would likely be left out for bama to get in. Do you guys think that’s possible?
Not unless Warde Manuel wants to end up being sued in open court

That is the stupidest opinion I have ever heard. Tennessee is in no matter what. Alabama is still a few spots behind us. Neither plays anymore to change things. Plus, if it was close (which it’s not), Tennessee beat Alabama head to head. This guy must be fishing for publicity. Nobody is that dumb.

No. Obviously any team moving will shift the rankings. What he said was teams who are not playing will not be able to pass each other in the rankings.

Based on that, it is not possible for for us to be left out. A team would have to be:

1. Currently behind us
2. Be playing this weekend

To be eligible to push us back in the rankings. There literally aren't enough teams in that category to take us out of the playoffs. Only possibility to move us back a spot is SMU losing, and still somehow jumping us in the rankings despite losing. Even in that impossible scenario, we would still be in the playoffs.

The committee would love to do this, but even this scenario would be so incredibly corrupt and egregious, I don't think they'd try it. May even constitute legal action for an investigation at the least?

It would totally mean that head to head matchups do not matter at all, whatsoever. The Vols beat Bama head to head, which should be the only automatic determiner needed. Throw in that the Vols won at Oklahoma and Bama, not only lost there, but was blown out at Oklahoma.
