I think at that point in time he wasn't ready to jump right back in to coaching. Jay said the timing would have to be right (in the next year or two), but this is the job he wants.

Perhaps he didn't want to leave ESPN to inherit the dumpster fire that was us in January of 2010.

Absolutely. Not many coaches would have touched the 2010 situation with the timing of it and the turnover they just had the year prior.

I dont think Hart would ever let a situation like that and such bad timing occur if a coaching change were to take place this time around. One thing that gives me confidence is having Hart as AD. The guy understands what it takes to compete at this level.

Why, exactly, do many people on here pine for Gruden? Is it just because you actually know his name and that he was affiliated with the UT program?

He's never been a head coach in college. He was a grad assistant here, but likely never had to shoulder a great burden on the recruiting trail. People underestimate how much time and manpower it takes to really be an excellent recruiter, and he's never dealt with it on this level. What makes you think he has the ability to go into Alabama or Georgia to snatch elite players from Saban or Richt?

I'm not even convinced he's that good of a coach. He won the Super Bowl in his first year with Tampa Bay with Dungy's talent. Aside from that, he had a good year in Oakland that ended in the AFC championship game. The rest of his years were either mediocre (which isn't good enough) or flamed out early in the playoffs.

Seriously. Why is he the answer? Honest question. I don't have anything against him, but I see nothing that would automatically put him at the top of any wish list.

I was gonna type up a post in this thread, but this was what I was gonna say.

Step back for a second and just think about this....

John Gruden vs Derek Dooley.

I mean seriously....

I can't believe people are questioning a Super Bowl winning coach (who by the way built up the team they played in the Super Bowl that year), who is probably the biggest "name" among all current and former coaches in the business.

It's unbelievable some people cannot see the night and day difference between the two, the difference in perception there would be (which is huge today with recruits, media exposure, etc) having a guy like that to someone who has a losing record in 5 years as a college coach and is incredibly easy for other schools to "negatively" recruit against.

"John Gruden to be named Coach-in-waiting at the University of Tennessee"

Pretty sure I saw something like that somewhere.

Yep....definitely.

year or two ? So he should be consulted before canning Dooley ?

If Gruden truly wants the job, which I doubt, then we should hire him if this season goes badly--though it will mean another costly buyout and expensive hire for a program that needs money. Dooley has really got to show progress the rest of this season.

People can laugh all they want, but I have gotten to know his brother Jay over the last year and a half. He's flat out said John would absolutely take the Tennessee job but it would have to come open in the next year or two.

My question was, "In the BCS Era the Big East has outperformed the ACC by a wide margin in BCS Bowl games. Why, then, does the media give the ACC such a free pass while constantly bashing the Big East?"

Who has the Big East BCS bowl wins and what conferences are they in now?

It's not just a matter of Jon Gruden vs Derek Dooley. There are other football coaches besides these two, and that's just in the known universe.

Oh, the Doorights are gonna love this one. ESPN NFL segment just a few minutes ago...

Jon Gruden on Titans' struggles said:
Well, they have the talent to get it done on the field. Britt should be getting healthy soon, and Chris Johnson is due. They could recover from the bad start. They are really set at the skill positions. Reminds me alot of the college team down the road there in Knoxville. All sorts of talent down there at the skill positions. Those big boys just have to pull their weight, Mike. The skill talent in Nashville and Knoxville makes an offensive minded coach like myself drool.

Have at it Doorights.

In that case, you fire Dooley after losses at Georgia and against Alabama.

I have it on good authority that John Gruden googled the Kingston Pike U-Haul office.

Where there's smoke.......

Lol that Gruden is such a tease...

He certainly is. One thing that really pops out though is that he had no reason to bring us up other than the fact that the Titans play in the same state.

*bump* just to drive you Dooley lovers bonkers:

Gruden is reportedly going to pay UT $5 million a year for the opportunity to repair this travesty.

Says it's hurting his property values in Jefferson County, and he's tired of hearing his wife gripe.

Book it.

Nothing like a typo to **** up an otherwise funny post.

Nice job regardless.

EDIT: Fixed an ironic typo.

EDIT: You fixed yours so I look dumb now.

EDIT: Jesus man.

I said this before, on the money issue....Take the proceeds from all the folks wearing Crimson in Neyland on the 3rd Saturday in October....That should be enough to pay for the NEW Coach and buy out the old one....:shades:

BUMPPPPPP for the Doorights again:
