What makes the college route more desirable than NFL?

Jon felt a little betrayed by the Bucs when they fired him. They were doing great, and then Monte checked out to come to Tennessee, and it went downhill. I've also heard him and management had very different ideas on moves, and that Jon wants to build his own team. The best place to do that is college football.

Also, it looks like from him working with his son's high school team, and the QB camp on ESPN, he loves to work with young players. I think that could be something to entice him with.

I think he ends up in the NFL soon enough. But it wouldn't shock me if he took a college program.

Why? Are you turned off by someone who has won with two different organizations? Someone who won despite the fact his starting quarterbacks were Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson, and Chris Simms? Someone who would be a beast on the recruiting trail? Someone who could put together a top-notch coaching staff because of his connections? Why would you piss in the hat?

you want a coach that won the big prize then got lazy?

you want a coach that after getting fired cant get another job but is mentioned for every open coaching position?

Not sure if you want Gruden or Fulmer

only difference is that you can name tons of his recruits. Can you name just one of Gruden's? Just one.

What's so complicated about recruiting that would prevent Gruden from being able to do it?

My guess is he could sit in his office and sign more All-Americans in one year than Derek Dooley has signed in his entire tenure at Tennessee.

Don't be ridiculous. Gruden would sign top 5 classes at any number of schools if he were to elect to coach at them.

He could have the Univ Of Miami job two years ago. He met with them and said no thanks. Can you name any of Pete Carroll's recruits before he arrived in L.A.. The guys offensive acumen is off the charts. He is a no nonsense coach whose put up with the likes of Keyshawn. You honestly don't think top-flight qb's, rb's and wr's would flock to Knoxville?

Hiring Jon Gruden as HC would be the best thing that could possibly happen to UT football. He'd basically be our Saban.

It would have been worth all the hell we have gone through if this happens. I know some don't feel that way , but it's just my opinion though.

He's Dave Hart's top target, and he'll have a ton of money thrown at him. UT has a shot.

I'm not sure if Gruden will be on the sidelines in Knoxville next year, but I'm damn confident that Dooley won't.

Any chance you can tell us where you are hearing this? If not , how good is this source iyo?

Dooley, though his recruiting his overrated by the fanbase has done a good job stockpiling offensive talent (sadly the defense outside of the JUCO front line and A.J./Curt is bad talent wise). I think Tennessee could compete within three years with the right coach if he could recruit well.

:yes:Dooley is not going nowhere you got him for least 2 more years.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? The reports of the boosters being pissed doesn't give you a hint of how this is going to turn out. Bruce Feldman saying 8-4 might not even be good enough. Hell Frank Solich got the axe after a 9-3 season. If the powers that be aren't pleased with the direction of the program he's done. Could he still save his job? Of course, but based on what we saw Saturday night do you have any confidence going forward?

Ah, the Doorights make an appearence.

Nice.

May I ask what the made up **** in this thread is Barb?

I can't take mediocrity. I would of been ashamed of how they played if I was Dooley. I would of let Chaney go last year also. We need a mastermind who can call plays and coaches the leaders of their side of the ball.

I take it the Gruden quote is from NFL Live, because that show is re-airing at 2am tonight. During UT's past two coaching searches, some posters would make stuff up and even start threads just to get a reaction. The Gruden quote posted a few pages ago in this thread is the kind of thing that, if not true, is not a funny joke.

That said, we don't have a coaching search at the moment. Hopefully, this season will do a 180-turn from last Saturday and we can safely get back to the days of winning nearly every game but losing to Florida. I am being a little facetious there, but that's basically what the Decade of Dominance was.

I agree. He has done what everyone knew he was hired for as far as recruiting goes. It hasn't been the greatest classes , but considering how bad we have been , I say he has done this part of his job well. He also hasn't sold only himself like the last staff. I hear him say that players want to come here because it's Tennessee. I hope that is the case. I am not hating on the guy , just being honest about it all. Some people called for his head the moment he was hired. We had to give him a chance and we still are. I don't feel good about it , but he could save himself if he wins enough games. A big game has to be one of them.

I think he knew this when he was hired. The man isn't stupid. 3 years is the right amount of time to judge him and do what you have to do at the end of the year. Be it a new coach or a contract extension. That being said next year is going to be much harder than this season. Shula won 10 and got canned the next year when he won 6. I'm not sure one good year is enough if he falls off in 2013. We will see. Dooley has to be honest with himself. Yes , it was a no win situation he walked into. That being said , we expect him to prove himself and not go backwards like we did last season. You have to turn a no win situation into a winning one if you want to continue to be the coach here. That's just the way it is. Year zero was year one , like it or not. He knew what he was getting into when he took on the task. I respect him for basically being the only one who wanted the job given the timing. Even if he does make millions doing so. I wish I was so lucky to get paid to do what he has and get that buyout if I fail. Bottom line is we have forgotten about the circumstances and we want to win now. Not against the Georgia State's of the world either. One of our big rivals and Vandy doesn't count. We have waited a long time for something good to happen on the football field. Show us something to make us believe you are the right coach for this university.

He's not going to win Bama. So he has to get UGA or USCe, not too mention beating a tough MSU and Mizzou team.

Exactly. Just show me something. Anything! Either that or we have to call a spade a spade. Yeah, it sucks he's inherited sucky situations, but other than one game against an 8-5 LSU team in 2010, he's never really led his team inspired against a good team.
