Jon Gruden thread (merged)

That was my reaction to what I see as the trash Dooley campaign being waged in this thread. I wonder how much of this has anything to do with success of the Vols and simply an attack against Dooley. Either we continue to improve, as Dooley was hired to do, or not and at some point a staff change will be made. Gruden has no proven track record on the college level at all and outside of the one NFL Championship a very mediocre history. Yes he is charismatic but that does not necessarily translate into wins.

Where does common sense enter into the equation? We have lost to two very good football teams who would have played very tough football against anyone on those particular games and both games were winnable for us. We may indeed lose to Bama, however so has everyone else. When we were at our best I'm not sure we could have beaten this years Bama squad anyway.

If you see the secondary improve their tackling abilities this weekend, for instance, would that temper your oust Dooley campaign?

Tackling them has not been the problem as much as catching them to have an opportunity to make the tackle that has been the biggest issue.

What have you seen in the way of improvement???? I saw a team that had 9 players on the field for a two point conversion. That same play had to burn a timeout that we very much needed at the end of the game. Saw a team give up 600 yards of offense in consecutive SEC games. Saw a team struggle mightily against an awful Akron team. Please don't say the obligatory "we changed to a 3-4, it takes time". That may be true but we wouldn't have changed had Wilcox not jumped off a sinking ship.

What bothers me most Medic is the in-game coaching. Play calling, adjustments, to name a couple. Plus the recruiting is not where it should be to compete with the upper tier programs. Look, personally, I think he's a pretty decent guy. Professionally, he hasn't shown me enough that if I were AD I'd keep him.

Exactly....the same mistakes are being made nearly 3 years into this expirement. That show a lack of discipline and leadership.

I'll remind folks....again...... WE HAD THE SAME RECORD AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON LAST YEAR. How did that turn out??????

Everyone that has Tennessee sports radio app should all go on textbook and tell Tony Basilio to talk about Gruden lets overload his textbox

I supported CDD until the UF game. Yes, UF has a very good team this year, but we had a chance to close on them and couldn't put them away. I realized shortly after that, they were not where we all wanted them to be. (Most all anyway) We were the same team that the rest could push around.

LOL, maybe you should go look at his record

It absolutely blows my mind. He is an employee, not some "Beacon of Truth and Honor". When employees underperform, they are replaced. At least thats how it works in most schools and athletic departments. Let Will Muschamp go 6-6 or 5-7 2 or 3 years into his tenure and see how fast he is ran off, BUT no worries there that "No talent over achieving team" is #4 and undefeated. We have just as much talent, but no one to lead them and make them believe.

**** these kids do not even know how it feels to win a big game, once they do they will want to feel it again.

Running game- improved
O line- improved
New D Coordinator- guaranteed procedural errors whether Gruden is in the house or not
Offensively overall look at the points we have put on the board including UF and UGA

Akron exploited our weakness in lateral speed by working the seams and that must be corrected and we should expect to see continued improvement there. You can bet Sunseri is all over that one including "setting the edge."

Now the kicking game? Not much good to say about it.

They were pretty excited after that OT win against UAB.

I think the Florida game set the tone. Had we won
the boys would have tasted blood and we would be
undefeated right now.

I myself am on the fence with Dooley. I do believe
he is in over his head. But with that said we lose
another game that we are "in" it will be time to
show him the door.

Exactly my point, we will be playing the unanimous #1 team in the nation in a week and a half. By all accounts an absolute beast of a team, and you say if we lose another game it is time to show Dooley the door.

Sorry Derek....we've made up our minds.

An apathetic fan base leads to naming your AD "intramural". We might as well be Vandy if we go into each week knowing we have no chance but it's OK just because the teams we are playing are great.

Yes that's correct. We are Tennessee and should lay down for no one including Bama. We could win if we had a coach who new how to motivate his players. How do you think Boise St knocks off everyone they play. Its about coaching

It is time to pull one out. The team will have a rocking Neyland stadium, national audience and their head coach's future as motivation. When will we beat them? Next year in Tuscaloosa?

I understand that. You want to throw Dooley under the bus and place the future of team in the hands of a fired NFL coach who is a fantastic self promoter with a .500 W/L record.

And you want to leave it in the hands of a coach who has a sub 500 record??????

Whatever chances we have Gruden probably wouldn't be helped by doing something like this.

Please read what I posted. Games we are "IN"

We will not be in the bama game

why can't a coach at UT turn the program into another alabama program like saban has built? alabama doesn't have better high school talent than UT, and UT has the same or better facilities.

How about Bill Cowher? Would he suit you?

Bob Stoops.

Don't know if that's serious or tongue in cheek. Stoops is a very good coach, but there's rumblings in Okla. that he can't win the big games. Don't think he could do any better at UT either. Maybe early on but not consistently.....JMO.

A .500 W/L record in the NFL sounds pretty good. How did Pete Carroll do in the NFL before going to USC?
And, Gruden is actually several games above .500, with a Super Bowl ring. Sign me up for Gruden. I doubt he is our coach next year, but to me, it's borderline lunacy to think Gruden would be a bad hire, because of his NFL record. The only argument against it that makes sense, to me, would be what we'd have to pay. If we get get him for 5 million, it'd be just the move this program needs, IMO. Get Gruden, his brother, and some assistants with college recruiting experience.
