There is some disagreement as to what "insider" information is available, and of that, what is believable.
Here's what is easily verifiable, and to which we should all agree:
Jon Gruden has ties to Tennessee, both personally and professionally.
He is one of the most accomplished young coaches in all of football.
While its debatable that he is the best QB coach in all of football today, he is inarguably in the Top 3.
He is old school, and a great respector of its many traditions.
He has a deep and sincere passion for the game, played at any level.
He is so well-known and widely regarded as to have college QB's waiting in line for his scrutiny, even before the draft, just to glean a small amount of personal instruction from him.
He is not currently employed, and by his own admission, wants to return to coaching, whether at the college or pro level.
We are Tennessee.
Despite our recent and now nearly decade-long slide toward mediocrity, we are a tradition-rich and historically powerful and rightfully proud program that can be mentioned amongst the other elite programs in the nation.
We have the best facilities in the nation. Bar none.
We have a 100,000 seat stadium.
We play in the best football conference that God has ever graced the history of humanity the joy of witnessing - and we find ourselves standing here, now, astride it's goldest of ages - and which is only growing larger and more acclaimed by the passing second.
We have 2 of the Top 50 richest men in America as major boosters.
We finally have and AD that not only "gets it" - but who is both skilled enough to develop a strategy and powerful enough to accomplish it.
We have thousands of rabid and passionate fans who are thirsty - desperate, even - to get back to our rightful place of national prominence.
We have a more active and vocal generation of fan who is unwilling to accept large spans of mediocrity, and only being punctuated by the anomalous "big season" once a decade, as some were willing to do in times past.
We have every reason in the world to go after Gruden, and every resource required to make it happen.
And while you have every reason to doubt that they'll make it happen - you have EVERY RIGHT TO EXPECT THEM TO DO SO.
And if they do not make it happen, then it is because they didn't WANT TO, and not becuse they COULD NOT.
Look around this website - a microscopic example of the fanbase - and count how many people that you are absolutely positive could deliver Gruden to Knoxville, given some of the money these guys have, and would do so within 24 hours? How many do you count that could be relied on to do that, of those here? 50 or more?
Then why should we not expect them to do the same?
And they should be held accountable, and at every turn, because it was within their power to do it, and they didn't.
And you will have every right to be angry if they fail to do so. They are not islands unto themselves, or some vaporous figure on the mount. And if they don't deliver what you deserve, who cares how much money, influence and good intentions they have or had - if they don't leverage those things to deliver what we need?
And if they can't do that, who needs them? Maybe MTSU or Memphis, but not us.
I know the perils of hope - but you should EXPECT and DEMAND Gruden. We should not be talking about other and lesser candidates, and abandoning the hill before the first shot is even fired.
Smart, Patterson, Strong and the rest are all good coaches who may do an adequate job here, but why are we so willing to gamble on any of them, who for all intents and purposes, are no more but shinier and slightly more accomplished versions of Dooley.
We are Tennessee. We need Gruden. We deserve Gruden. We should demand Gruden. We are right to EXPECT Gruden.
And if he's not delivered, you SHOULD BE ANGRY, disappointed, let-down at being forced to settle for some imitating and cheaply made alternative. Again.
