His house is big....has bars on the window, and those padded rooms, that lock from the outside.

It must be computer time in the rec hall.

He'll calm down when they give him his paper cup full of happy pills.

They asked him if he had things to do over, if he'd do em' the same and he said, "I reckon I would, mhh mh."

He can coach.

I have no doubt big time high school athletes know him, know what he has done, and would love to play for him at Tennessee.

The first bullet point is gravy. The second bullet point is all important at TN when we have natural recruiting disadvantages to our rivals.

All-in on Gruden. That HAS to be AD Hart's first move.

Last time Gruden was successful enough that it would influence any recruits was 2002, when most recruits now were 8, 7, 6?

He took a team that Dungy built and won a Super Bowl with Monty Kiffin, then did basically nothing at Tampa for the next six seasons. Prior to that, he did a great coaching job with the Raiders, though. I will give him credit for those teams. Unfortunately, now we are asking recruits to remember what happened in the AFC West when they were 5 years old.

If you want Gruden, you have to want him simply for coaching prowess. His past is too removed to be a recruiting draw for 16 and 17 year old kids; and, there is nothing on his resume that points to him being a great recruiter (closest you could maybe get is that Keyshawn enjoyed having him as a coach).

It would be a grand slam hire from the standpoint that Tennessee is for real about its future and ready and willing to maintain their rich tradition of being a historical top 10 program.

*the only problem would be the overwhelming opinion on VolNation that he would be immediately successful at a very high level and the bar is already set insanely high. If he lost one game his first season VolNation would be calling for his head.

**of course I would support such hire and direction but imo it will never happen. A pipe dream at best. If and I say if gruden coaches again, it will be in the NFL. He has a better shot at titans job than Vols. Imo.

Really? What has he ever done in college? Why is everyone hanging their hat on him? I would be giddy to have him, but he would not be the right choice. Please inform.

Answer: "ERMAGHERD, A SERPER BERL RING!!!"

while conveniently ignoring the absolute TRASH that was on the field during Gru-bage's stint as HC in Tampa.

I promise you this: Jon Gruden will make the Volunteer faithful long for the reign of Derek Dooley, and I WILL be the one to start the "Fire Gruden" thread (IF he is hired), on the HOUR he's hired.

The buzz alone would allow him to recruit well. He is on mnf and does the qb school before every draft. Almost all of the prospects love him. Dooley has recruited well considering the situation and not being a big name. I cant imagine what gruden could bring in. One thing I worry about is him being out of coaching for a while and the hours you have to put in.

I promise YOU this: You hold yourself and your opinion in way too high regard. If you don't like the exchange of varying opinions and ideas, then the intarwebz may not be your cup of tea.

So you don't support a coaching change? Not sure that even those who had reservations about Dooley were this hardcore. Did Gruden bang your wife or something?

Nope. More like wiped his *** with my favorite NFL team. Yes, he won the SB with the Bucs. However, given the choice and the ability, and knowing then what I know now, would I trade that SB title for Jon Gruden never having been the head coach in Tampa?? Absolutely, without a second's hesitation.

And for the record, no, I do NOT support a coaching change.

I'd take GQ over Dooley at this point. I want someone who knows how to win. I wasn't on the fire Dooley train, but there comes a time when enough is enough. How likely is a 10 win season if Dooley is given another 5 years?

Critical thinking. You're doing it wrong.

1. I do not think that Dooley has recruited well.

2. I have to think that the buzz surrounding Gruden would be the exact same as that surrounding Herbstreit. It would be buzz from a TV personality that might draw recruits; but, is not going to draw recruits to the same extent that a coach with recent success will draw.

3. Gruden might get better talent than Dooley (hard not to). Gruden is a better coach than Dooley. Is Gruden $3M/year better than Dooley? As you said, you worry about his coaching.

There are guys out there that are getting the job done right now in Division I football. The problem with the Dooley hire is that he was not getting the job done. I would rather throw money at coaches like Sumlin and Mullen first before throwing money at Gruden.

You should start a thread championing your choices. It works.

I think Sumlin would be fine, but be just took a job last year.

I wouldn't feel comfortable about Mullen because his recruiting.

Gruden makes about $4 million at ESPN for working 1-2 days per week. How many more millions will it take to get him to take the UT job, working 80 hour weeks, under pressure?

Interesting questions. I'm surprised nobody has asked them already.

I would like to see UT take a good look at Gundy, as well. He has had more success at OSU than Les Miles did. He can coach. And, he can recruit. The only question with Gundy appears to be: will he focus on defense in the SEC?

Great thread idea. With any luck it will hit 10k posts too.

Just because you only see him a couple days a week, doesn't mean he has no responsibilities behind the scenes.

If, and I seriously doubt it, Gruden is hired at Tennessee then I'll support him just like I'll support any coaches at Tennessee.

I just don't see him giving up a 2 day a week job for BIG $$$ that he loves to come to Tennessee and work his butt off and having to beg 17 year old kids to come play for him.

Whoever our next coach will be will get my 100% support just like all our coaches and players have.

VFL...GBO!!!
