Jon Gruden thread (merged)

I always try to remember that CDD was the only coach that would take on our rebuilding task and he's done it with Honor and Dignity and has had lots less kids in trouble with the police.

I respect him for taking on such a monumental task in the SEC when he knew the cards were stacked against him.

For what he's done with recruiting and trying his best to turn things around we should all respect him and simply say..Thank you coach for your best efforts.

With our fanbase I almost feel sorry for whoever our next HC will be because the expectations will be sky high and if he doesn't turn things around in a year or 2 then people will start screaming for his head too and another Gruden type thread will start all over again.

At least the next HC will have a player roster that's lots better than what CDD had when he came to Tennessee.

VFL...GBO!!!

75%.

The only concern I have is Harts ability to marshal the support to get it done. Gruden is interested, the money is available. Hart has some internal problems with the lawsuits that aren't going away anytime soon.

In the end though, I don't think anybody wants to be the guy that kept this from happening. From a media standpoint alone it would be huge for the University and would go a long way toward repairing our national perception.

...or what's left of it.

Not sure what's worse, being in the spotlight, struggling on the field, and having off the field incidents or being an after thought in the landscape of college football.

Yeah comparing to now. Not sure how you could pur in way more hours than collefe coaches. A lot of them sleep at the office and carry 18-20 hr days

Gruden hits the office everyday by about 4am now. He's a notorious workaholic. Seriously, people need to let this point go. There may be reasons that Gruden is not a fit.....workload will not be it.

Other people could also see it as UT hiring another coach with no college coaching experience and wonder wtf

I think the hours he'll put in is the last thing you need to worry about with Gru.

Also, IF he is hired, I don't think we will have to worry about him bolting to another school or the NFL (like Kiffin) in a couple years. He doesn't need Tennessee to be a stop gap to get back into the league. IMO, if he comes, he's here for the long haul.

Yeah a high buyout will solve that also. If kiffin had a 5 or 6 million to leave im not sure usc would have paid it.

While I think that we are a talented football team, we just are not a good football team...believe what you want, but as with any business, institution or college football program, the blame starts at the top and slowly trickles down. Dooley's biggest mistake is not understanding this. I honestly feel like he has deflected blame to the point that he has painted himself as a casualty of others' mistake and shortcomings. He has refused to really man up...so, imo, its time for him to take his talents elsewhere. I want a man that knows how to win and is willing to step up to the plate when things go wrong, not someone trying to learn on the fly and who always seems to find a way to paint himself as the victim of his team's shortcomings.

I do too.

I'll never have a Kiffin-esque hatred for the man. He just doesn't have what it takes. But he tried.

This is exactly how I feel. he gave an honorable effort...time to move on..A good man..did make progress in building some talent..now we need an A+ mind to bring home the ring

Honest question. Are you related to Dooley?

Yeah....failed WAC coach vs Super Bowl winning offensive guru is the same.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but to equate the perception of the two is assinine.

lot of you guys seem highly optimistic, how about each of you put down a percentage of how likely you think that Gruden is coaching UT next year.

After the last couple of days I would for the first time say I am better than 50-50. Dooley is done, they are talking to someone and all of a sudden this morning people texting me last night are saying nothing. From chatter to total silence is a good sign. They are talking to someone and that person is not coaching. I am 100% convinced of that through my friends and people like SBV that know people. What other big names are out there that are not coaching but Gruden?

That's what I base my > 50-50 on.

Gruden is a coach not a commentator. Just because some people who put more value in an easy job than a rewarding job are obviously not very driven lol. That's such a weak argument, driven leaders like Gruden will never stay away from leadership roles they do not have to look for them, they just appear. That's when you know you are a leader in a field, your name is mentioned for every job. I think UT can get Gruden for around 3.5-4m guaranteed with performance guarantees topping 5m.

If people are wondering why you would hire a former NFL head coach that won a Super Bowl, I would say wtf to them. I'd gladly be the first college team to try that experiment.

We are talking college coaching experience, not WAC, not SB ring.

Has Gruden taken the exam yet that would allow him to talk to recruits?

I actually think, despite the inconceivable vitriol that some seem to display towards him, that most get this.

He took a job that was always going to be thankless. Nothing he could have done short of an SEC title in 3 years was going to be enough for the most vocal idiots in our fanbase.

The question is, if we make a big hire and we are till a 7 win team in 3 years, what will the attitude be then?

Recruiting would be my main concern with Patterson..Someone posted TCU's recruiting rankings on here and they sucked.

I'm not advocating for Patterson, but who cares as long as he can coach them up. Petrino is a perfect example of that.

He could almost certainly recruit better talent to UT though.

Looking at some of the players he's turned out, oh well.

We've recruited highly and done nothing with it. If he can coach them up, meh. Granted, it's nice seeing your class highly regarded but if he's winning games and producing pros, the rankings mean squat. You also have to keep in mind he's coaching a small Christian school in the MWC. I'm not sure how well people would like him to recruit there. Give him Tennessee's money and facilities to play ball with in the SEC and he'll get a lot better classes(on paper).

May be right, but you gotta recruit talent in this league, you can't rely on coaching them up.
