I don't hate Dooley. I hate the fact that he is the HFC at UT. There's a major difference that's worth noting.

UT fired a coach who won a national championship and did give his all for Tennessee (I know he didn't finish strong)--and that firing was based on his inability to do better than mediocrity in the SEC. Then the same AD hired a coach who couldn't achieve mediocrity in the WAC.

It was moronic and the program didn't deserve that.

That's not saying anything against Dooley as a person. He seems like a nice enough person. This is about his ability as a football coach, his qualifications for the job, and whether he deserves to keep the job. Nothing more. :hi:

My honest opinion of our coaching search in January of 2010 was, "who wants to be fired by Tennessee in three years?" When Dooley was hired, the expectations I set were that he would put out the dumpster fire, recruit us back to 85 scholarship players, and then be evaluated on wins and losses in Year 3 and probably be fired then - hopefully with UT ending up with a great coach given better timing and a full team.

I may end up right on all counts; I just wish Dooley could have at least managed to keep the KY streak going, but I guess that was too much.

He said Jon L was a good hire. Hmmm..Dooley has the Vols 3-1 .... Lets get behind this team . We got a chance for a good year and give this staff a little time to gel.

Where was this money when we hired Dooley?

UT has a history of not putting the money out there to hire a big name, but with all of the recent problems, and the fact that you pay for what you get, they have no choice but to put it out there.

To answer your question honestly, Dooley was a cheap and quick hire, and if Hamilton wouldn't have dictated terms, Cut would have been our coach. The caveat on that was he couldn't bring certain people, and he had to keep Thompson and Chaney. That wasn't going to happen either way.

I don't think Cut would have been a good hire. I just have a hard time believing all this " the money has already decided" talk. Only because I have a relative who is major donor and his opinion is that the best thing for UT right now is for Dooley to be successful.

The Florida game was disastrous for Dooley, the way it played out with buildup, Gameday, electric home environment, et al. I just think that game took on more significance - especially with the way it was lost.

Yes it was. It was his chance to show the world "you can't kick Tennessee around anymore". And it turned out to be the same old story. He still has his chance. I have given all my support to him and waited until it was the right time to judge considering the circumstances. He wins some games he shouldn't and he will save himself. If not , I see no way he is back. That being said , if we end up with someone that is basically like the coach we have now , we will be right back here in 3 years ready to can the guy. It has to be the right hire or we are in for more disappointment.

Of course it is. 90% of posters would agree with that.

The problem? Every week he coaches seems to show he's not the answer.

Of course it's what's best for UT right now, but Dooley hasn't yet proven he can win in the SEC. We have only beaten 2 teams in our division in 2 years under him, and neither of those teams will ever challenge for the East title.

Having Hamilton as an AD was a huge liability for the search, beyond the crazy time constraint he placed on it. Specifically, whoever took the job would be reporting to the guy who made such an ugly affair out of the Fulmer firing (some class and humility was due to CPF).

Dooley has helped the program (or the program is better now than it was then)...but it's hard to know how much of it was Dooley and how much of it was simply time passing.

For example, I can't say he helped more than the most obvious alternative at the time (Kippy as interim), but I do know that more time was needed, and a more deliberate process was warranted. 'Haste makes waste' is the headlines for that hiring process--and that was exactly how it felt to me when it happened.

Yet, I do sense that you and I both want what's right for the football program. I suspect you just had more faith in CDD than I could muster. That happens, but there's enough evidence now (over after 4 more games if you must) that we should all agree that it's time to move on.

I don't disagree with that. Reality is that if we win Saturday this thread dies. We lose and a lot of goobs in this tread get closer to saying I told you so.

Hammy has been hanging out at SC football practices. I'm not even joking.
