Leb takes his reasoning to extreme, but he is right that Butch's credibility is on the line here. Think about it for one second. In this current school year we've had Johnson, Williams, Jones(even though he's left the team media makes certain to point out he was a UT player), and an unnamed player(from that Tennesseean article) accused of rape. Four players accused of sexual assault in one school year. Now, I have no idea if any are guilty, but the accusations alone give this program a pretty serious black eye. Now Butch is considering letting a player previously dismissed over assaulting a young woman back on the team? If it works out, great, it's a feel good story of how a second chance turned a young man's life around. If it doesn't work out, then Butch is the guy that apparently condones violence toward women(not a view I believe, but a view I definitely see national media and opposing coaches exploiting for sensationalism). The media would rip UT to shreds if Paulk were to have another incident with any young lady.
Again, I'm not arguing against second chances, but I don't think this is a decision easily made. There are lots of factors that have to be weighed in making the decision. I really don't envy Butch on this one.
