Does he actually get to go to school without having to pay

I don't believe so. I think he is a walk on... but I may be wrong.

I do think the kid needs to improve on catching the ball, but I support him in whatever he does. He's a Vol and the last thing our guys need to see is the fans for the team he plays on going on non-stop about how bad he sucks.

man y'all are the definition of negavols.

.....i totally agree but this is just an 18 year old kid.

Not being a NegaVol if you accuruately describe/critique what you see IMO. No need to name call, just say the kid's not performing on Saturdays, and let's try another WR at this point.

Go back through history and you will see very few WRs were forced into playing time as true freshmen. Josh Smith is playing because he's the best option they have. He is giving his all for Tennessee every day.

Josh is a competitor and he will succeed at UT. There a lot of folks rooting for him.
No, he's not. He's splitting time with Croom, and he needs to sit out the rest of the season. Let Croom take his reps.

I agree...he definitely deserves a break. Like for the rest of the season....just chill on the sideline and let those who have made clutch catches (Croom) all year get those reps.

In watching him play the this year it seems to me he is afraid of contact. When you get thinking about the contact you don't think about catching the ball. The ones he has dropped have been in some traffic or where you would expect to get hit. Also when he catch that one pass he just fell down instead of getting the first down. He is not in 3A Tennessee high school football anymore.

Ok. I see how this is going to go. With Worley, boo the hell out of him for every bad throw.

Dobbs though, Dobbs can do not wrong. Don't mention that he threw two picks and turned it over on a fumble, and made several bad throws. No. Just god help the first receiver to drop a pass and transfer all of that bad play, funnel all of it, to him and away from Dobbs. Especially if the kid that dropped the ball was white. Right?

Sounds like you got a personal axe to grind. Worley got too much irrational "he sucks" criticism and there have been a handful of us saying for weeks that the WRs share much of the blame.

There is absolutely no way NOT to say that Josh Smith has been really bad with the multiple drops game after game. Seems like a great kid, hard worker, excellent in practice.... but he simply can't catch the ball in Saturdays.

As for Dobbs, he was a true freshman making his first start at a Top 10 team with a very good SEC defense. He made mistakes, but he also made some very good plays and throws and got virtually no help from any other offensive player... WRs were bad, OL was awful, RBs below average. You'd be a fool not to see his potential and poise coming away from his performance. Just has a much higher ceiling than Justin and is our future at QB.

Josh Smith isn't ready to be on the field just yet. That is the problem. Its the problem with most of these freshman. Coach Jones has been forced to play them before their ready because there just isn't any talent in the upperclassmen. Smith will get much better as time goes on, as will all the freshmen. People need to realize this is the best we got right now. Calm down. Whats everybody going to say when Josh Smith catches the winning TD pass against Alabama in a couple years?

I don't think harsh criticism of individual freshmen is warranted. He has the talent to become a very good WR.... but he shouldn't be on the field as a starter right now. Hunter and Rogers even got the opportunity to play with and behind G Jones and D Moore.

The drop was huge and tough for him, Dobbs, and the team. But he did a whole bunch of things right on that play before dropping the ball.

The OL is made up of 4 Srs and a Jr. They've been developing and gaining experience for multiple years. They stank it up. That bothers me from both a coach and player angle. They seem to do a whole bunch of things wrong before "dropping the ball".

Freshmen being freshmen... You've got to live with it in situations like this. Well developed, talented, upperclassmen on your lines costing you... that's different.

You're telling me that he couldn't turn to Drae Bowles who happened to be a stud 4* recruit when we landed him?! I guarantee there is better talent at the WR position on that bench than Josh Smith.

I cannot say how Bowles does generally... but in every clip I have seen from practice with him in it... he drops multiple passes.

I'd like to see him get out there too... but maybe he really doesn't deserve it.

He is either trying to run before he catches the ball taking his eye off the ball or he is looking over his shoulder afraid of the hit. Look that ball into your hands what happens after that will be determined but you have to catch the ball or none of it matters.

IDK if this has been brought up yet, but, why not convert him to a DB? He seems pretty dang fast and gets open. I bet he could cover a receiver. And then it doesn't matter if he can catch or not. Just knock the ball to the ground.

I can't wait till he makes the game winning play against Alabama in a couple of years and so many people start sucking up to him... How about you rally behind our kids like our coach does and not be internet tough guys? If you think that drop cost us the game, please, inform me of this... Otherwise, shut up, and try not to make us look too bad... Its a wonder any recruit wants to come to Tennessee to play for fans like so many of us...

People have every right to criticize players who are deserving of it. Remember, this is a SPORTS MESSAGE BOARD...not a sensitivity seminar.

Hey Josh...if you or any other players on the team log in, you should know that the majority of posters on here appreciate you giving your all for Tennessee everyday....something most of us have never done, yet feel as if we have a right to tear down those who haven't performed up to our expectations.

Good luck to you and the team on the rest of the season!

He might as will get his transfer papers. Won't see the field after this year.

Really? He is a freshman. Justin Hunter as a JUNIOR still was lucky to catch a long ball or two. We may have gone to bowl game if he wouldnt have dropped so many passes from a Junior QB.
