Kansas fan makes fun of Pat's condition

Then why say it? You don't see the disrespect?

Dan (can I call you Dan?), I understand we all find humor in tasteless comments sometimes. And we all find humor or laugh at inappropriate things at inappropriate times.

But we are talking about one of the greatest coaches in the history of college athletics. And she's ours. She is Pat Summitt. And it's not okay to laugh or make light of her illness.
I agree with all of this. I can't change that I laughed when I first read it. I posted that I laughed when I read it BC I felt I deserved to be bashed by you guys for being wrong.

Guys this guy is a sick S.O.B. but don't compare this guy to Kansas University as a whole. I lived in Kansas for a while and was at the UT vs. KU game and I have had nothing but good experiences from them and their fans. With that said this guy is a complete moron and wouldn't be saying this if he was affected by it.

Would you giggle if it was one of you parents, or one day your kid i would not, you want to know why because my mother is like coach, not to damn funny.:rtfm:

To be perfectly honest, I probably would. I have always and will always use humor as a coping mechanism. Sort of a laugh to keep from crying thing. That probably makes me a bad person. I do understand your point though and I'm sorry your mother is afflicted. I have a few family members with Alzheimer's also.

Nonsense. "Making light" of an illness is perfectly natural and frequently occurs among those who must deal with its effects on family or friends. For someone simply to find humor in it isn't wrong -- especially when they're conscious of the gravity and seriousness of the condition.

To admit to partaking in finding humor at inappropriate things and then scold somebody else for doing it is hypocritical.
We're talking about Pat Summitt. I hold conversations regarding her to a higher standard. Perhaps that's my problem. I suppose it is. But I'm ok with that.

You don't deserve bashing. You just need to take a deep breath and realize you shouldn't feel humor at the misfortune of Coach Pat Summitt.

Some of you need to lighten up. I feel sorry for you
You're wrong. It isn't a light illness. And it's not a joke.

You're not a bad person because of this.

Just stop. Enough. Stop while you're behind. Then just go.

It is in poor taste, it's disrespectful, and to some people it is hurtful. The more you try to backtrack or back peddle the worse you make it.

Just give up and come back and post another day. Bad idea - just move along.

You're wrong. It isn't a light illness. And it's not a joke.

Being a self-proclaimed Christian, you ought to realize it shouldn't be "okay" to hold mere mortal beings to higher standings. She's a human with inherent flaws.

Not backtracking guy, just giving a reason for it

This is rediculous. People make fun of people all the time. No point of wasting your time discussing. Just ignore.

Maybe not, but it makes me seem like a bad person a lot of the time.

Try this, maybe you were laughing at the ACTION the person did and NOT the disease. My mother is in bad shape mentally and sometimes I laugh at what she does or says. This, in my mind, does not make me a bad person. It is a coping mechanism plain and simple. Now let's move on. I think you are a little hard on yourself. I pray for anyone who has this horrible disease.

You reason appears lame - move along. "If my mother had this fatal disease I would probably laugh." "Coping mechanism". You're selling but I'm not buying. Sorry.

You're obviously smarter than the numerous studies shown to reduce blood sugar levels, increasing glucose tolerance in diabetics and nondiabetics alike.

"It improves your job performance, especially if your work depends on creativity and solving complex problems. Its role in intimate relationships is vastly underestimated and it really is the glue of good marriages. It synchronizes the brains of speaker and listener so that they are emotionally attuned.

Laughter establishes -- or restores -- a positive emotional climate and a sense of connection between two people, In fact, some researchers believe that the major function of laughter is to bring people together. And all the health benefits of laughter may simply result from the social support that laughter stimulates.

Now comes hard new evidence that laughter helps your blood vessels function better. It acts on the inner lining of blood vessels, called the endothelium, causing vessels to relax and expand, increasing blood flow. In other words, it's good for your heart and brain, two organs that require the steady flow of oxygen carried in the blood.

At the very least, laughter offsets the impact of mental stress, which is harmful to the endothelium."

As the primary care provider for my mother (6 years now), who is in the terminal stages of Alzheimer's, I can tell you that there is nothing--absolutely, positively nothing--funny about this condition. It robs a person of his/her dignity and identity and it ultimately becomes much harder for the care provider than it is for the patient. Joking about Alzheimer's is unconscionable. If I am in a situation where some modicum of diplomacy must be exercised in expressing hostility, I am now inclined to say in the softest possible tone, "I hope that you develop Alzheimer's or worse, yet, that you become the primary care provider for an Alzheimer's patient." It is an extraordinarily cruel disease.

Charlie Chaplin once said that life is a comedy from far away, and a tragedy up close.

I'm definitely not laughing at the disease. More like the particular situation. Its not funny that Pat, or anyone, has Alzheimer's. I found it funny that her picture was used by someone to illustrate forgetting. I feel bad that I find that funny, but it doesn't change that I do.

I had an uncle who was mentally handicapped. Being mentally handicapped isn't funny, but due to his debilitation any time you asked him for the time he would say "half past a monkey's ass, a quarter till his balls." He would say this in front of old ladies and preachers if you asked him. I found this hilarious. Not hilarious that he was retarded (unlike most families we didn't use the PC terms. I mean, we never said "Tracy you are retarded" but that word doesn't offend people in my family) but that it was hilarious you could get him to say it.
