Kansas fan makes fun of Pat's condition

This is my first post on VolNation. I’ve read through this thread and it is really something to see how many people’s lives has been touch by the Alzheimer’s disease. It is truly a cruel disease. When Coach Summitt found out that she had it, she said that she did not want a “pity party”. Because Coach Summitt is a courageous and strong women, she said she was going to fight it, and that is what she has been doing. She and some other people have set-up the Pat Summitt Foundation to help fight the Alzheimer’s disease.

You can help Coach Summitt fight Alzheimer’s by making a donation on the website The Pat Summitt Foundation | East Tennessee

There are a lot of options for giving. Also, according to the website you can “Text COACH to 50555 to give $10 to The Pat Summitt Foundation. Be sure to confirm your gift by replying with "YES" when prompted.” The Pat Summitt Foundation | Text to Give

I found the first option easier, since I live in Europe and my mobile phone doesn’t always do what I want it to do.

As having my Grandfather pass away from Alzheimer's, to see ANYONE make fun of this horrible disease is heartbreaking! This is the most horrible disease anyone can face, and I sympathize with any family having to go through it! It is sad that we, as a society, can only seem to find joy in the misfortune of others! It was flat out wrong for them to poke fun of Pat, and wrong for anyone to see the humor in it! Yes, I may be taking this a bit personal, but I stand behind my view of the situation!

Why do we have to partake in the misery of others? Why is a joke somehow demonstrative of not taking the condition seriously?

Do you have answers to these questions? I used to know them, but I have since forgotten.

No go ahead, I'm ashamed but I'm not gonna lie and say my first reaction was outrage. I found it funny. Still, I feel bad about finding it funny. If I can't be honest with you guys then who can I be honest with?

I thought I had read the worse post in the VN history until this POS. Maybe you should visit with Pat and Tyler and share the humor.

Oh really....my generation respects, honors, and is sensitive to these issues. You need to move on pal.

Your respect and honor are misplaced and misdirected, and your sensitivity is your own problem. Summit is facing a struggle that at least hundreds of thousands of humans before her have faced and millions more will most likely face. If an individual decides not to make a joke, she will not miraculously be cured. Hell, if she even hears of the joke and is even weak enough to actually take offense, she will forget about in a few minutes anyway.

You will proudly reside as the 2nd worse post I have ever read. Your lack of any understanding comes as no surprise to me. It only amazes me how "progressive" our society has become.

You two need to get over yourselves.

No you need to learn where to draw the line.

I'm all for seeing the comedic value in most any situation however making a joke about dementia and actually making fun of someone with dementia are entirely different.

You're making too much of this cheese. It's not mean to poke fun at disabilities. It's a lack of intelligence. It requires no mental effort to rip on a disabled person.

Okay, so this is:

is a joke about dementia and might be funny. But this:

is a joke involving a specific person with dementia, and is not funny?

I just want to make sure I understand where exactly I am supposed to draw this imaginary line.

Hey buddy. It is a personal thing. I still want to see one of these heroes share this "comedy" with Pat and Tyler. I guess the keyboard allows for this crap though. No one has to be held accountable. I surely do agree with you, it requires no mental effort or intelligence. They do fit that criteria.

BTW..what is TRUT and LULZ? Old age catching up with me.

I was worried you would not be content and you are a failure on your own.

Well, I'm glad that you no longer have to worry. You also do not have to worry about me being a "failure" (whatever that means), as I am quite sure that I have fulfilled most of the criteria of "success" that is held by backwards-looking, middle-aged Americans.

My grandmother died as a result of the disease. Her death really ripped a lot of my family apart. Many turned to alcohol and drugs to cope with her loss.

I find the disease much more insulting than the jokes.

What do you guys think of this idea? It was floated as an idea for a t-shirt, but later yanked. Tell me what you think.

"Pat Summit may forget, but we never will."

I am sorry for your loss. The disease and the insults are equally wrong. How anyone can spew that b.s. is beyond me.

If backwards-looking means I am sensitive and respectful to Pat's condition, guilty as charged.

If you had Pat in a picture with a joke caption like that then imo that's crossing the line. She actually has dementia the kid doesn't. Add a joke about Pat coaching basketball and dementia as the Kansas fan did and that makes it even worse.
