It sucks Keeban Pili is hurt but even if it's a season ending worst case scenario, as a few others have mentioned, it shouldn't be catastrophic.
We actually have a recent history, even through the dark ages, of getting quality out of freshman LB.
Next man up.
Pili was in on about 20 defensive plays. He nearly led the team in tackles on that. He recorded a tackle once every four plays.Pili had 4 tackles against UVA. If we cant replace that production we are in bad shape.
Think we actually have a good amount of depth at LB. He did bring a lot of experience to the table though. Hopefully Beasley can shoulder that responsibility. Would think him, maybe with the help of tank, we’ll be fine. This is a blow at a position we could least afford to lose. He was a huge pickup.
Yup. Not sure how interchangeable the lb positions are but of the two stud freshmen, it’s Telander who’s listed at Mike, not Carter. Herring should play through about the second drive of the 3rd and then Telander needs to get some reps if he’s going to be the backup.Tealander is gonna start getting game reps.
Can they slide Beasley into that role to call plays or no?The thing that’s missing in this discussion is the role of our MLB in the 4-2-5. The MLB calls the play, cues any disguises or blitzes, and then (most importantly) forces a choice that leads the offense into our call. The thing that Pilli has been great at is calling blitzes and disguises in alignments, and forcing the qb to make bad choices. We have better athletes than Pilli, but we’ll miss his leadership and his smarts. Obviously we’ll do well this weekend. Napier’s offense is built on making the defense bite on an alignment that doesn’t tell the play option. They don’t have the horses on the OL, but they do have a great RB. We’ll have to play that game with discipline to win. They aren’t good, but they’ll be up for that game. I’m more worried about UTSA. Traylor is a very good offensive mind. They’re efficiency vs talent is one of the best in the country. They had a combined per-play success rate of 63%, 7.5 adjusted yards per play, and about 16.5% explosiveness. For non-nerds, that is very good. Our LB’s and safeties will be seriously tested in that game. Pilli was a real asset, but I’m excited to see the young guys step up.
Looks like we possibly can get him back after the FL game. Technically it is 4 weeks. The week between this game and AP, the week between that game and the Florida game and the 2 weeks between the Florida game and the UTSA game. If it isn’t a major injury, that should be ample time to heal up! I think this only hurts us during the FL game. Hopefully, we will be OK.Rumblings on VQ and more. What’s the word?
