Keenan Pili Injured?

After reading what Banks thinks of him before the injury update, it seems as if he was the one made sure everyone on defense was where they needed to be. Like the defense captain right? Who’s the better communication guy now?

The sky isn't falling

2011
AJ Johnson MLB - Freshman All American
Curt Maggit SLB - 8GS 56 Tck 5.5 TFL

2015
Darrin Kirkland Jr MLB - 66 Tck 6.5 TFL 3 Sck

2019
Henry To'o To'o MLB - 72 Tck All Freshman SEC

It sucks Keeban Pili is hurt but even if it's a season ending worst case scenario, as a few others have mentioned, it shouldn't be catastrophic.

We actually have a recent history, even through the dark ages, of getting quality out of freshman LB.

Next man up.
I forgot about Kirkland

Pili had 4 tackles against UVA. If we cant replace that production we are in bad shape.
Pili was in on about 20 defensive plays. He nearly led the team in tackles on that. He recorded a tackle once every four plays.

That was impressive production and will be difficult to replace. Not impossible but difficult. What will be harder to replace is his experience and leadership.

Tough loss. Herring would be the next one up right? Or possibly Arion Carter? Excited to see him play! I think he was a kid that Bama wanted badly.

This is a blow at a position we could least afford to lose. He was a huge pickup.
Think we actually have a good amount of depth at LB. He did bring a lot of experience to the table though. Hopefully Beasley can shoulder that responsibility. Would think him, maybe with the help of tank, we’ll be fine.

We will be fine with Herring. He is ready. Does he have all the intangibles and experience of a 5th year senior? No, but he has the talent and a good head on his shoulders. We are loaded at LB and there may be some growing pains, but the experience this early will help him when we hit the meat of the schedule starting with Florida.

Until he 100% KNOWS he's gone, I don't see the benefit of confirming it...cept for gamblers.
That is the driving force behind injury reports in the pros. Why else to normal fans of the team need to know specifics of any injury? Other than wanting the player to get better.

Tealander is gonna start getting game reps.
Yup. Not sure how interchangeable the lb positions are but of the two stud freshmen, it’s Telander who’s listed at Mike, not Carter. Herring should play through about the second drive of the 3rd and then Telander needs to get some reps if he’s going to be the backup.

The thing that’s missing in this discussion is the role of our MLB in the 4-2-5. The MLB calls the play, cues any disguises or blitzes, and then (most importantly) forces a choice that leads the offense into our call. The thing that Pilli has been great at is calling blitzes and disguises in alignments, and forcing the qb to make bad choices. We have better athletes than Pilli, but we’ll miss his leadership and his smarts. Obviously we’ll do well this weekend. Napier’s offense is built on making the defense bite on an alignment that doesn’t tell the play option. They don’t have the horses on the OL, but they do have a great RB. We’ll have to play that game with discipline to win. They aren’t good, but they’ll be up for that game. I’m more worried about UTSA. Traylor is a very good offensive mind. They’re efficiency vs talent is one of the best in the country. They had a combined per-play success rate of 63%, 7.5 adjusted yards per play, and about 16.5% explosiveness. For non-nerds, that is very good. Our LB’s and safeties will be seriously tested in that game. Pilli was a real asset, but I’m excited to see the young guys step up.

Can they slide Beasley into that role to call plays or no?

Beasley’s calling is being free to take the ball after a play develops. He’s been great covering space, qb runs and short passes. He can help call plays and set defenses, but we don’t want to lose his range or coverage.

I was concerned about losing that. Herring is the next guy up.

Do you realize we had 1 LB with reliable experience returning from last you? Hope and numbers don't replace experience right away.
Eli Herring played in all 11 regular season games last season. Bennett was heavily “experienced”. We upgraded with talented freshmen.

Rumblings on VQ and more. What’s the word?
Looks like we possibly can get him back after the FL game. Technically it is 4 weeks. The week between this game and AP, the week between that game and the Florida game and the 2 weeks between the Florida game and the UTSA game. If it isn’t a major injury, that should be ample time to heal up! I think this only hurts us during the FL game. Hopefully, we will be OK.
