Keep Pearl around!

Basing everything strictly on the results Pearl has accomplished - putting aside his coaching flaws for a second - I don't see how this discussion can even be happening.

3/4 divison titles with Florida and Kentucky in your division says quite a bit.

advancing your team to the furthest it has ever been in UT history in half your coaching years.

4 straight tournament appearances - longest streak in the conference.

4 20 seasons, including a 30 win season.

His results speak for themselves. Obviously he has coaching flaws, I don't think anyone is denying that, but right now you can't argue with where this program is heading.

Given that next year's team will be pretty much be the same - save for maybe Tyler leaving and getting D West -Pearl's coaching is going to be the center of attention. We'll see if he can use the off season to adjust his style to these players. He knows exactly what he's got on the floor, now it's a matter of if he can adjust.

If we have a similar or worse season next year, then I may begin to question Pearl a little more, but until then I'm still going to say he's done wonders for this program and it should continue.

I think alot of people are just in shock that UT lost and obviously because he is the Coach, everyone has jumped on Pearls back. IMO if we are'nt careful some of these haters will get what they want and could leave this program in a very bad state of affairs.

Plain and simple, this team played w/ little to no heart and didn't really BUY into Pearls system.

We made it to the tourney after losing DUKE CREWS, R. Smith, C. Lofton, and Jujuan Smith. It's hard to replace those 4. Well, those 2. No offense to DC and RS.

That is not accurate. We made the Sweet 16 and played UNC in 2000.

Neither do I, but a large portion of our fan base apparently thinks part of the job description of the men's basketball coach is to be a jester.

Speaking for me, he doesn't have to do that to fit the job description of a good coach. If he did not do it, it would not change my opinion of him. He has plenty of flaws, and some showed up this year. He coaches his style of ball better than he coaches situations.

Perhaps it is too much to ask but I just wish he would acknowledge that he sees what Gregg Doyel and the rest of us see and that he is taking action to address it. Better yet, show us with some in game coaching and discipline. His courtside demeanor, in terms of the way he handles the players, is eerily similar to the clapping hands of a coach who will remain nameless.

Instead I sense indignation that he should not be questioned because he has been more successful than previous UT coaches. I am afraid that the excitement and energy he brought to the program will turn to apathy if this continues next season. I don’t think his ego would stand for that; and things could get ugly real quick.

Probably . . . but why does that have to be the measuring stick forever, and why do I have to believe that any coach pulling it off at Tennessee is John Wooden?

You don't have to think that. But if someone told you before Pearl was hired that he would win 20 games and go to the NCAA the first four years and advance in every year except this year, would you have said, "Man, that sucks; he should have at least had a couple final fours."
I would hope your answer to that would be no. And if Pearl loses 10 games a year the next 3 or 4 years, then absolutely he should be getting heat, but clearly the program is progressing not digressing at this juncture.

I think he started to see it a little, but too late in the year to fix some of it.

Pearl needs a team that can run, period. Our team can't run an up tempo style of game especially with the PG situation we have.

If they don't know the history of the program that is their own fault.

No it's not, it's the fact that our Men's B-Ball team has been buried up in mediocrity up until the recent burst onto the national scene. I followed UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest more than UT B-Ball up until recent years when our current coach got us back in the spotlight somewhat. Plus, regional coverage of our team has sucked up until recent years as well.

So? Being a bandwagon fan isn't their fault?

Guards period, those 6' guards are looking better to me everyday. I know at some point you will run into a match problem, but I'll take what we had.

Ramar probably would've made the guard situation a little better. Lofton and J Smith fit Pearl's system really well, which is why they were such a big loss. Some may argue "they aren't NBA players...how big of a loss could it really be?" The fact of the matter is they fit Pearl's style really well. So if people want to call them "system players", go ahead. Those two were still a huge loss for this basketball team. Now that Pearl has grinded through a season without them, he knows what to expect from his guys.

Well put!

They difference between Lofton/Smith, and what we have now is, they played as hard on D as they did on O.

How can you be a bandwagon fan when we haven't had much success in the past up until recently?? Ut hasn't really ever been a basketball school except for the women. It's not like we are dripping with tradition like a UK, Duke, or UNC of the region.

Uh. Simple. They hopped on the bandwagon when UT started winning.

Why wouldn't you hop on when your local school starts winning after not doing so for years and having poor TV coverage?? Most fans like to be able to watch their favorite teams, and until recently people who wanted to see UT play were SOL. UT Men's B-Ball isn't like the Red Sox and Cubs of the sports world. They actually have some tradition to fall back on when the bottom falls out from under them.

If they really cared it isn't that hard to turn a radio dial.

Take a look at Florida basketball. They didn't have much success until those two titles. During the four/five years preceding those titles, Florida didn't get to the sweet 16. Attendance was probably around 8,000. During their title runs, attendance was probably close to 11,00. And since those two titles, attendance has probably averaged around 8,000 again. Heck, they only got 4,700 in the O'dome for the first round of the NIT.

So yes, you can be a bandwagon fan with a poor program history.
