Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

My opinion of DD, which has never been very high based on her time here, just soared lol.

Seriously, its a pretty big indictment of the WNBA when the player who said she'd be a better player once she started getting paid rethinks her choice. Good for her being a sounding board and sharing her experience.

I don't get the zero sum game where if I'm glad we got to host, played well and made the S16 it means I don't want a final four. That's just a silly and false narrative. Ya'll act like you're guardians of the legacy by refusing to crack a smile over anything less then a natty. Then you have to huffily tell all us we should do the same or we're easy to please slackers. My life's too short not to find a little happiness in the journey.
never said anything about wanting a FF was referring to performance over last 15 years you have shot me down before argue with facts if you are inclined

As far as recruiting, a lot of coaches coach USA basketball. I just saw that Jeff Walz coached Caitlin Clark. Indiana’s coach has a side gig,Walz does, UCLA does. I bet that helps with recruiting. Kelly doesn’t coach anywhere else does she? Is that hurting her? I guess by the time the girls are on 18u and 17u USA teams they already know where they are going?

Have to be in the Geno fan club to get USA coaching jobs.

Same ole same ole from our forum. We think we’re going to win every game until we don’t. Then let’s burn the place down cause we actually lose. I swear that some of us wouldn’t be satisfied with a 35-1 record because of that one loss. The LV’s have stayed very solid and steadily improved over CKH’s time.

Notice Darth and others disappear during wins (or redirect their posts towards something else) and wait till we lose to rear their heads. Now we get to deal with them all off season :/

Ladies, us true fans appreciate your effort this season and are proud! Go Vols!

I was as critical of Holly as anyone, but she did reach the Elite 8 three times and win the SEC titles. Hell even Kyra Elzy, who is god-awful, managed to win an SEC tournament title.

And make no mistake, Kellie had an Elite 8 caliber team this year...

Preseason there was a nice crowd believing F4 was there for the taking.

She was extended through 2027 last year. Contract extensions are meaningless in the grand scheme today. A nice reminder that Holly was paid to not coach her final few years as hers ran out last season.

Are extensions meaningless? You have to buy out coaches if you sack them before their contract is over, right? I imagine that the buyout for Harper would not be too high; still, why would you extend a coach who hasn't accomplished much of anything and who contract doesn't end for four years?

Agree with the second part….meaningless in that they don’t guarantee they’ll see it through to the end of the contract. We would still buyout the remainder to not coach, plus pay another staff to hopefully recoup the ROI.

You extend because of recruiting because part of getting a player is being able to tell them that you are on contract for their college years. It is that way in every sport. No one would want to play for someone with a two year contract. The extension for Harper is coming don't know if it will be for four or five but it is coming soon.

Harper probably earned a small contract extension with the Sweet Sixteen run.

Yep, otherwise she might have trouble recruiting...

If KJH signs Destinee Wells will you still feel that way? The albatross of no high school class will always be on her, but does she get any credit for portal recruiting? (If it happens again of course).

She hasn't managed to get a point guard in four years, so I'm not exactly brimming with confidence.

Of course she gets credit for landing some really good transfers, and I get recruiting is a whole different game now. I just don't subscribe to thinking that traditional recruiting is less important, and building a team through "free agency" is a championship formula...

Apparently a free agency team will get you to a FF. Ask LSU. So just a step away.

I don't think there's a set formula yet. It's all a work still in progress, ideally will settle out to a blend of high school and portal recruiting.

Powell doesn't count? On paper, I thought she was the missing link.

I think there are instances of using the portal where you can essentially "Build A Bear" your own team, but I think it needs to be by building around a player on your team, not finding a star. There will be exceptions (LSU), but otherwise you run the risk of ruining team chemistry. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.

She was supposed to be, and she was an absolute disaster. The search for a point guard continues...

I agree with this. Ideally the portal should be helpful to fill in gaps and compensate for recruiting misses for an otherwise strong roster. Tennessee's roster looks ready made to make a deep run with the exception of one spot, which happens to be the most important and the one Kellie can't seem to fill...
