Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

She was supposed to be, and she was an absolute disaster. The search for a point guard continues...

I agree with this. Ideally the portal should be helpful to fill in gaps and compensate for recruiting misses for an otherwise strong roster. Tennessee's roster looks ready made to make a deep run with the exception of one spot, which happens to be the most important and the one Kellie can't seem to fill...
That's assuming Horston returns. If not, they definitely need an upgrade from Darby and probably whoever is playing the 4 (assuming Jackson at the 3 and Hollingshead backing up the 5). So they pretty much need to upgrade the entire starting lineup outside of Key and Jackson.

How about Jill at 4 and Key at 5 w Striplin rotating through both. That sounds pretty strong to me. Then RJ at 3, portal guard at 2 and Powell and Wells spliting time at PG like Powell and Walker did this year. Darby backing up SG, Pissiot (depending on progress) and Puckett backing wings, Wynn and Miles I guess backing up PG. That way all we really need is the magical taller, good shooting, good defending PG and a very young post who can watch and learn this year.

This is what I see as the key needs from the portal: PG and SG starters, and a big PF starter-level (or big back up C that moves Jill to starting PF).

PG - Portal, Powell (backup)
SG - Portal, Darby (backup)
SF - Jackson, Pissott (backup; hopefully ready)
PF - Portal, Hollingshead (part-time), Puckett (part-time to sparingly)
C - Key, Hollingshead (part-time), Striplin (sparingly)

Whoever is at PG, I'd like to see them play 30+ min/g against good teams. I don't like the sharing deal. They need stability. Get a PG who can run the offense and provide continuity.

I wouldn’t mind an upgrade at center, maybe get an athletic center that commands the paint and a scoring threat.

I think Lexi Donarski from Iowa state would be a good starting Pg, what do u think?

I don't see what's wrong with Key. Her defensive presence is a huge obstacle that most (if not all) teams will have to contend with, and there's no reason why she shouldn't be starting. This assumes that Kellie lets the offense flow through Jackson, not the post. Key is the perfect post for rebounding, putbacks and blocks. She doesn't need to be the focal point.

Depends what she can get from the portal. You get a SG who is more than a spot up shooter, then her assistants better get in her head if she insists on playing Darby big minutes. She's a nice option, but she should not be the starting SG with the roster they have at the moment.

She's a really solid fundamental player that does all the things you want a steady PG to do, but I don't see any chance that she'd come to Tennessee.

I continue to ask for guidance on what not "accepting" looks like? What should we do to show we don't accept? Stomp our feet? Write a tough post? Burn a mattress? The team and coaches don't accept by trying their best to get better. Hate to break it to you guys, but we have no role in any of that.
I hope all posters realize that what we get from a team is based upon what the coaches and administrators ultimately see as acceptable, however, it doesn’t hurt to state one’s opinion. Are coaches or administrators going to be affected by the opinions of a bunch of posters, could be, but who really knows? Coaches and administrators know these fan boards exist some may read them while others may totally ignore them. In the scheme of things it is the opinion of boosters, those giving out NIL deals and the lack of fan participation that really have the ability to sway the opinions of coaches and administrators.

There were some real parent issues during that time. Whew! That definitely contributed to the toxicity.
And honestly, I agreed with one parent during that time, Mr. Hayes, I wholeheartedly believe Annie should’ve been playing more than Westbrook their freshman season.

It was a very tense and difficult situation. I really loved Annie’s speed and her willingness to get to the rim - if it meant going amongst the trees or laying her body on the line - she was willing! Wish it could have all worked out different.

recruiting is definitely a detrement but in-game coaching was weak this season....I grade a coach by one significant factor,,,
"Where the wins/losses bc of the players or bc of the coach?"
There is an old saying CJ, players win the games in blowouts. Coaches win the close games.

You extend because of recruiting because part of getting a player is being able to tell them that you are on contract for their college years. It is that way in every sport. No one would want to play for someone with a two year contract. The extension for Harper is coming don't know if it will be for four or five but it is coming soon.

Yes, we wouldn't want the absence of an extension to stop the freight train that's been our recruiting! Please.

Yes, everybody extends coaches who make even the smallest of strides--and I'd argue that it's a dumb and, ultimately, expensive habit, born of insecurity. That is why major-college athletic departments all over America and sending BIG buyout paychecks to coaches sacked two/three years ago even as we speak. It's a regular thing with football coaches. Some guy goes from 4 wins to 6 and the AD decides to extend him because he might become the next Bill Belichick and we could win the national title in a year or two and we'd sure hate to lose him. Two years later the same AD is sacking the coach and the school owes him $25 million. Happens constantly. It's a dumb thing.

No prospect is going question Harper's future when she's got 3 years left on her contract. That's a false fear.

If you're old enough to remember it, then hopefully you're still competent enough to realize it's not relevant. The program Summitt took over versus what Harper took over aren't even comparable. Regardless of current record, Kellie gets respect anywhere she goes on the recruiting trail due to the work Summitt did. Pat didn't have anything close to that during her early years.

Good grief: Summitt didn't "take over" a program. The program had just started. She was our first coach--or the second ,as I believe she took over as coach after the first coach, whoever that was, quit after a very short time. Of course Summitt didn't get a lot of respect during her early years. Nobody did: It was the early years OF THE SPORT! And if Harper is getting a lot of respect on the recruiting trail, it's hasn't been manifesting itself in, uh....recruits.

But the prospect would definitely hear it on the ‘cruitin’ trail. Guaranteed.
