Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Rae Burrell was ranked 49th in her class and didn't see the floor under Holly. As for Key and Horston, Kellie had to go and re-recruit them. Hell, Key was ranked 47th in her class. Compare that to Sarah and Karoline who were 41 and 43.

Nice deflection. How many top 50 players did Staley have on her first team?

Disingenuous much?

Mulkey has been at Baylor/LSU for 23 years. Staley has been at South Carolina for 15 years. We're not counting Staley's Temple years as a major university program.

In comparison, Kellie has been over a major college program for a total of seven years. Please name the number of mid-major and smaller school programs that have won any national championships since the early seventies before the women played in the NCAA tournament.

As mentioned many times before, there is a grand total of 5 active coaches who have won any national bb championship. If titles are your sole standard, then all but five coaches are utter failures.

Kellie may or may not be the answer to winning titles. That is her goal and what everyone wants. But you're not exactly setting up a level playing field here. Remember, if Bluder's team hadn't done a phenomenal job behind the performance of a transformative player, this year's final would have again featured two of the exclusive club of five (which includes Frese with one NC twenty years ago).

Yes, we should expect Elite Eights and Final Fours and eventual championships. But when the guy who has three times as many NC as any other active coach has had a championship drought since 2016, it demonstrates how hard it is to get there.
Only coach mentioned by me, is the only one to be fired. You left that part out. I assume that was not deliberate or disingenuous. Which is the same coach without a championship. So again, how long does it take?

I clearly said HIGH SCHOOL All-Americans, which is a fact. Are you seriously comparing the talent Kellie inherited to what Staley took over?

Rickea Jackson, Rae Burrell, Horston, Key? Poor Kellie with the empty cupboard...
Kellie did not inherit Rickea Jackson in her first year, she recruited her this year.

Darth usually does not get his facts wrong to such an extent. I guess his enthusiasm to disparage Kellie as much as possible got the better of him.

We can add that Kellie certainly has not gotten the full benefit of Rae and Tamari due to their injuries.

Somebody above tried to claim that Harper doesn't have a lot of major-college experience. Nonsense. She was at NC State for four years, before getting sacked, has 11 years as head coach of two mid-majors, and has been at UT for four years. That's a lot of experience.

Mulkey was an assistant at Louisiana Tech for 14 or so years, got the Baylor job and won the national title in her 5th year at Baylor.
Staley, after several good years as head coach at Temple, took over at South Carolina, had a losing record her first two years and made it to the
Final Four in year 7.

If Harper & Co. are going to make a move and show that the can make us a serious contender again, the time is now. It's a very competitive environment nowadays, and it takes coaches with special qualities to truly succeed.

If Harper is going to get to a Final Four anytime soon she better get more serious about recruiting. First thing I would do is get someone who can recruit as the recruiting coordinator.

How about we pay Candace $200k/year to be our recruiting coordinator?

We've extended offers to practically the entire top 20 ranked high school recruits for the last couple years. Many of which took visits on campus. The problem has been in CLOSING the deal.

Now, we have a much larger NIL budget to utilize.

Unless, the top 20 players aren't interested in making a little coin.

Wasn't that supposed to be Samantha Williams?

BS. Kellie isn't going anywhere.

That all depends on next season's results and Danny White. Fulmer hired KJH and he is no longer there to protect her. If DW is ok with a winning season and making the NCAA tourney every year and making a small run, then she is safe. IMO I think next season is a pivotal yr for KJH's future at TN.

As long as Kellie keeps making it to the Sweet 16, it would be hard to fire her. There would be too much media backlash. Anything short of that would open the door.
