Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

She did finally get one elite recruit…That we have to wait 4 years to actually get on campus
Reading through, and people keep trying to compare our situation to other schools. I don't follow other schools. I follow Tennessee. Given she's a Lady Vol, I'd love to see KJH succeeding, but I look at recruiting and we have zero high school commits this year. The commits from last year's class are all gone. I'm just not convinced we're seeing a sustainable model if we rely totally on the portal to get players.

I get the urge to defend KJH, but recruiting is obviously a huge red flag atm. How does a program with our tradition not attract a single high school recruit?

18 year old recruit now was 6+- the last year PS coached.

Does anyone here have confidence that KJH can take the LVs to a Final Four? I'd love to believe, but I don't. If she does, I'll gladly eat crow.

Pissott played very little and achieved very little last year. That doesn't add up to "a big loss." Just the opposite. This notion that she was poised for
greatness next year is comical. Looks like a very overrated high-school player.
So you're saying KJH couldn't develop her? Interesting.....

When it’s phrased that way it seems Holly left the program in better shape than some want to admit. Her true evaluation of the company she’s in starts when her players Darby, Striplin, Sara and Justine are on the draft clock. She gets credit for the draft picks, so Holly should get credit for getting them here.
With Both Jamie Nard and Mercedes Russell falling far in their draft picks from what they were recruited you can tell that Holly didn't leave it in great shape and was not developing players. Diamond left early and benefited from it, Evina Left Early, Annie Hayes just had to go (but she don't count really), T'ea Cooper left due to internal fighting going on, Middleton got out of dodge. The list goes on. When Kellie came in and changed course, she coached Rennia to a number 1 draft pick, Coached #49 recruiter are to a number one draft pick and coached Jordan Horston to a number 1 draft pick. She will do the same with both Rickea and Tamari and I would not be surprised to see Jillian up their too. But to say Holly left Tennessee in a good place or on the right path is not true.

So again, it seems Holly left it in good shape in regards to players based on your own words. Just two examples of context left out, Diamond left early because her clock had her sit out a year in the transfer from UNC and Evina got developed the same at UConn as she did here…role was reduced to coming off the bench and she got drafted in the second round. Her issues might have been her own and not Holly or Genos. So my original point stands based on your own worlds.

Evina talked swimmingly about Gino and in her own words said that something at Tennessee had to change because it wasn't working, apparently referring to the coaching. 8-8 in the SEC that year and 1st round loss in NCAA tournament? How many number 1 recruits fall as far as Mercedes did by the time she was drafted at number 22? The program was in shambles looking to be the next Louisiana Tech. Holly was single handedly sinking that ship.

Evina should talk swimmingly, she’s trying to get drafted. Just stated her time at UConn didn’t move the needle to her own development. 16 and 15 points for Mercedes in her final two years seems pretty strong to her under 10 her sophomore year. Her fall to #22 you’d have to look at the draft and see the needs of teams. Tennessee that year had 3 girls selected in the Top 22. Only team to say that.

A question.
If we've had a recent history of having multiple players being high draft picks in the WNBA (And I agree, we have), then why hasn't that translated to a better performance in the SEC and NCAA tournaments ?

You got that right Dak. Sometimes Assistant Coaches just can not make the adjustments. She did not control her locker room.

Because there's not really correlation between high WNBA draft potential and collegiate performance. There are plenty of really good college players that aren't viewed as strong WNBA prospects. There are also about as many underachieving college players that ARE considered strong WNBA prospects.

Warlick and her staff could recruit but she was a terrible coach and did not manage the program well. Harper is a better coach--but not a great coach--
has done a good job of managing the program--but is a bad recruiter. So there we are.

I have quit worrying what KJH and her staff are doing in the portal, or in high school portal, because we should get a very good idea within the next six months. If she is smart, which I believe she is, she knows her situation and what it will take to put an excellent winning product on the floor. If fails this season, then administration have a decision to make, do we allow a once proud program to fall further down a rabbit hole, or do we try and find someone who can resurrect this program back into a top 10 program? The ball will be in their court.

Down the rabbit hole Bffr please. UT has literally had some of the most consistency in the country.
