Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

If you've never heard of an upfront signing fee for a college athlete then you've been living under a rock the last few days since the football transfer portal opened.

Heard on sportstalk radio this afternoon that Heupal really wants Walter Nolan, star defensive lineman transferring out of Texas A & M, but has already determined his asking price is too rich for their blood. So he'll probably go to Georgia or Alabama, where they can afford anyone.

That's a semantic argument. From what I've read, it is part of a NIL deal every player at South Carolina gets offered when they come to Columbia. Someone could say "that's not NIL in spirit," but that argument isn't material to the fact the players get 25k in an NIL deal when they join the team. Even if you want to say it's a signing bonus, they don't call it that, and there's no framework or appetite to challenge either it or South Carolina's NIL program at the moment.

So no matter what anyone wants to call it, South Carolina's players get 25k in NIL payments a year minimum. Call it whatever - it happens. There is a mechanism in place to compensate their women's basketball players from day 1.

And what gets me about this situation is that you get people who gripe about Harper and her recruiting, lay the blame entirely at her feet, but really, how much more do they need to see to understand that Tennessee has one hand, and possibly both hands, tied behind its back? Is UT throwing 20-30k at people just for walking through the door? No? They're not? Hmm, and South Carolina is? Wow. Gosh. I wonder how that impacts recruiting top players who can command the highest dollar values in NIL deals. I'm not saying she's without responsibility, or even saying Tennessee should just roll out barrels of money at a whim, but I am saying UT's not on equal footing with other schools at present and that impacts recruiting.
Duh… 😉

Wondering how much LSU is paying out. I do believe UT is missing out on elite players because of NIL deals from other schools.

The sign on bonus is considered part of the total NIL package. But doesn't relate to the players name, image, or likeness being used or sold. It's just extra.
Probably considered a retainer for future services rendered. That would be $6,250 per year. Chump change. I really don’t get why we have failed so badly on this front. I’m ready to sharpen pitchforks, oil the lamps, and head toward the AD office.

South Carolina fans circulated rumors about what LSU offered Joyce Edwards recently. Can't remember the amount of the initial pay out, but among the perks were a three bedroom luxury apt, free travel for her family to all games, and the topper, a guarantee of no in person class requirments after the first year. LSU said it was all overblown, but they are rumored to have donors with deep, willing pockets. Winning national championships will do that for you.

I'm confused. How is 1.5 mil $6250 per yr? Pretty sure these fellas want full payment up front.

I’d start by not promoting from the bench. After that open it up…you’re not getting Dawn, Mulkey, Geno, Tara. You need a purse between 1.25-1.75M, possibly 2M on the right coach (lure Muffet out of retirement). You don’t take an assistant, but you go all in on whatever it takes to get a recruiter that can match Jolette Law. A coach like Hammon isn’t coming to deal with NIL, portal and high school recruiting.

Whenever White looks to replace Harper, I would look at a Connecticut or a Stanford assistant coach as a possibility.

LOL now that would go over well. Maybe Chris Daley?

More on upfront cash payments and NIL pkgs in the transfer portal

“I’ve got the university reaching out to me for help with facilities, while at the same time the NIL group is looking for cash because of NIL,” one Power-5 donor told OutKick. “I’m being pulled in different directions, where as in the past I would just donate to the athletic department. But we’re in a different world now. We need the players to compete, so I’ve changed how I support the football program.

“I want to see my team winning on Saturday, so if that means donating to the collective to get a star player, that’s how I choose to help the program now.”

Forget donating for a new library. New quarterback needs a new Ferrari. I hate that the upfront lump sum payment, which IMO is a very questionable thing, keeps getting lumped in w true NIL, which IMO is a good thing. Probably bc collectives do both things.

We would have fans believe Geno sent her to sabotage the program. No, we are good where we are at with our own setting us back.

absolutely
I am 63 and can still knock a stuck basketball from between the rim and backboard
getting up there is still possible
Landing, however, is somewhat more trepidicious
Ha, hence your name.
Give it 5 years. Hopefully you'll be in <5% who can do that.
It's your head they are so concerned with. Falling down gets easier.
I fell during an egg toss. stepped backwards into a slight hole and..... hernia. Good news is hernia surgery is piece of cake these days.

actually my name is from the way I teach jump-shots
My method is to time the jump-shot, either from reception to release or from dribble to release
I want my player to be able to shoot from "reception/dribble pickup to release of the shot" in .75 seconds (3/4 of a second)

Even saying the roster is flawed, but with Rickea u always have a chance, one special player having legendary performances in the tournament can take u a long way.
We keep talking about the roster being flawed and maybe it is, however, have we considered that the coaching is so flawed that it cannot get the best out of its players? The defense is sloppy, the team has problems blocking out, they are a turnover waiting to happen, they have trouble setting picks, KJH has a difficult time calling timeouts, she can’t make in game changes, etc. players like Spears & Wells come here and their game goes South. Holingshead was a 5 Star McD AA, has she remotely looked the part? I was a big supporter of KJH but I believe it is time to move on.

Kellie has lost almost all of her VolNation supporters
The team grew, but she is still coaching Missouri St. mode
sigh

Yeah, it is over. Without the support of these 10 or so anonymous posters, how can this go on? Even winning the National championship this season, can't say have her now. Turn out the lights, the party is over....

Any Courtney Banghart fans over here that still want her? Some of the North Carolina fanbase has soured on her.
As a lifelong UNC fan, I’ve been very disappointed in recent years. My expectations are pretty low though, so it’s not like Kellie Harper-levels of disappointment more like Lady Vols soccer-level of disappointment.
