Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

I read the article this morning in the Nashville Tennessean about the MTSU loss and Kellie noted the coaching staff are working 100 percent but the players need to stepup and take ownership.

A little misleading, she said the coaches are working 100% right after saying they need to take ownership as well and that they review and pick apart every decision they make. So it wasn't "we're doing ok, they need to do better".

She never said anything about coaches taking responsibility until Cora Hall asked her if they should be. Before that she was blaming it all on the players.

For those screaming for an in-season replacement, please consider:

1) If the candidate pool only includes—as it should—successful coaches,
2) do you assume that heaps of cash would get them to abandon their players to take over
a team in disarray?
3) Do the obvious ethical questions not rule out such candidates?

Short form: Patience, Grasshopper.

If I recall at the 8 min mark of the presser.
All true. Man Cora is all over KJH right now. KJH acted surprised Cora would even have to ask about coaches taking respons. She was like "Oh yeah! Of course!" For sure. it was only when asked. But it did get said, which the TN article apparently didn't make clear.

Actually I was a little surprised she went in so hard on the players at first and knew it wouldn't go over well. OTOH everyone is always bitching for her to be tougher on the players and maybe they really are the ones not stepping up. You can drag a horse to water but can't make it drink. We don't really know the locker room.

Whatever the dynamic is, it's 100% the coach's job to straighten it out. We'll know by the results. KJH job is probably depending on it.

The Fire Now Screamers have to accept the outcome would be Coach Sam and/or Coach Joy the rest of the season. And nothing would be different, except a quick trigger/big drama message would be sent to all future coaching prospects.

And we are. But there's a whole month coming up where they're home, they only have a couple of cupcake games and plenty of practice and film time. If the mindset can't be reclaimed during that period, either with or god forbid without RJ, then it is over for KJH. Still probably wouldn't happen in season, but would need to happen right after.
Only has two ways to go. Judgment season is approaching

Not saying it’ll happen. But if it did, my call would be to Al Brown as a bridge coach. Not sure if he is still in the Knoxville area, I’d see him walking.

Wes Moore made it clear during the last coaching search he had no interest in coaching at UT. He took the NC State job because he wanted to finish out his career in NC.

And that was a shame. At the time, I thought he would be the perfect person to right the ship while Kellie built her resume at Mo State (or a larger school). Wes had the stature, winning record, recent success, and recruiting contacts. One question was how much longer he would want to coach, but that seems to be a moot point for now.

Looking at the longevity of some of the iconic coaches in the game, it makes it additionally sadder that Pat's career ended abruptly. We're never guaranteed tomorrow; have to make the most of the present and be prepared to meet our Creator at any time.

And evidence at MOState said Kellie was a great hire. What one does at one doesn’t necessarily mean it will carry over to another or vice versa.
I think most of us thought MO St said Kellie was a convenient and very iffy hire. Everyone knew she was unproven at this level. We hoped with the $ and facilities her alma mater had to offer, she could prove herself. For many reasons, some her fault some not, she hasn't been able to get that done.

Love that man! Not sure where he lives now, he's on Sports Animal some during basketball season. Only thing, Al's getting real long in the tooth, his heyday w Pat was 25 yrs ago. He was on staff when Kellie played.

Another good one is Dean Lockwood. Now there's a post coach!

Turning a basketball program around is much easier than turning a football program around...As I said, It's Tennessee...All you have to do is look in the rafters at the banners and the tradition we have here...I can't picture a coach not wanting to be there...Players flock here when the right coach is in place...Get a no name coach and they won't show any interest...It's just how the game works.
Okay,, you gave me some insight,,makes sense.

I only said Al because it was maybe two-three years ago I saw him in West Knoxville area. Just to coach the remainder of the year, fresh eyes and calming demeanor to the team.

Jmo but i don't think we will be up to par
Next month when SEC teams roll around.

Dean should have been retained…but that would remove Jon from the equation.

ChatGpt says: Some of the best active women's college basketball coaches in 2023 include Shauna Green of Illinois, Kevin McGuff of Ohio State, Kara Lawson of Duke, Lynne Roberts of Utah, and Teri Moren of Indiana. Additionally, Dawn Staley of South Carolina, and the UConn coaching duo of Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey also receive honorable mentions. These coaches have been recognized for their significant contributions to their respective teams and their outstanding performance in the current season.

Kellie had her opportunity at a bigger school; the same school Wes Moore resurrected and elevated from her dismantling.
