Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

You say that because you believe in a certain way.it’s not dumb look at SC intros the way they jam during timeouts that appeal to recruits look at Angel and Flaujee if you thinks that’s not appealing to recruits then you are dumb but you are not dumb you just believe in the era of CPS being status will but these are different times

What exactly does South Carolina do? We should be teaching young people to appreciate higher culture. Instead, the mainsteam often drops down to street level, and that's not helping intelligence levels in the U.S., to say the least. Maybe Coach Harper should get a few tattoos and pretend to like hip-hop. She could make her own hip-hop song--it's not hard: Put on a repetitive digital beat and then talk-sing over the repetitive beat for four minutes. Boom---she just landed another recruit! Better, I say, to follow the Tara Vanderveer and ex Muffet McGraw standard instead---loads of success, loads of class-- and didn't resort to cheap antics to impress recruits.

Did I read somewhere or did I dream it....That when being recruited to Tennessee her Dad/Family wanted her at a Stanford or Duke type school?
Her Dad. Didn't come to games for a long time if ever. I think he was a high ranking military guy
I do remember this about Lawson. She had an extremely high SAT score and literally could have attended school anywhere even if she didn't play basketball. She chose UT against her father's wishes and he didn't attend her games until the 2003 NC game her senior year. He was high up in the Pentagon in some capacity.

I went to a game there a few years ago as I was passing through and weather had me stop in Cookeville. I think this was around 2018/2019. They had just replaced the court and the lighting, and it was quite nice. Some of their fans were talking about the big plans to pump some money into the athletic programs to bring them up to par. Was kind of cool to see, although that court and that lighting are terrible for watching a game, the wood bleaches out in the LED and it's just a giant bright reflective surface.
They were doing a big capital fund for the football team to do an indoor facility/training. The rest of the programs facilities are rural area high school priority. Went to an event last year and was surprised how bad the softball/baseball area is, some rec league parks have more in their budget.

Do people really think Lawson would be better than Harper? I loved Lawson as a player and an analyst. She is probably one of the most overall intelligent people in the sport. That being said........

I have no idea why she feels she should have been given a chance at UT in 2019 when she had no coaching experience at all. It makes zero sense to turn over any top flight program to someone who had literally never been a coach. Did she get so upset when she wasn't considered that she has burned all UT bridges? To me that smacks of a lack of self awareness and even entitlement. I think she's done well at Duke and probably has a higher ceiling than Harper but I have serious doubt UT would be any better off at this point if she were the coach. Her recruiting has of course been much better and that could pay off but so far the jury is out.

Again, I loved Lawson at UT and on ESPN. Her IQ is at least double my own, but it appears there are overly sour grapes from her for something that when framed properly makes no sense. Do I just not understand what happened or have I missed something?

I agree with you on Kara-- great analyst and obviously quite smart. I was hoping that those early rumors that she wanted the job and was the front runner were true. She would have been a high risk and high reward hire.

As it turned out, her overall record is less inspiring than Kellie's. (Duke is currently 6-4 with a much weaker schedule) but Kellie has the Sweet 16 on her UT record which Duke still lacks.

You can say that Kellie has more experience and should be further ahead but there is just no evidence to show that Kara would be some massive upgrade.

On the recruiting front, I don't know what kind of NIL situation Duke but that is one heck of an academic brand. Like Stanford, Duke has some built advantages due its prestige.

There is another lessen from the Duke situation,. When Joanne McCallie was hired, she looked like the right coach to take Duke to an NC. She was the "hot" coach coming offer her Final four appearance and Big Ten title with Michigan State. She did okay wining a few ACC titles and making it to the elite 8 several times but she did not reach the level attained by Gail G. and had a few dud seasons with losing conference records mixed in.

Hiring a name coach is never a guaranteed outcome.

There is still plenty of time for Lawson to prove she can be a great coach. I'd say anyone with her brains can be successful doing whatever they want. However, she has a long, long way to go before she can be declared a top coach who can deliver what the fans here want and expect.

Another status quo fan who believes in just clapping and singing Rocky Top
Not really..just a fan that knows a severe lack of grammar when I see it.

That said, I don't know that you are totally incorrect on that post, but I'd say that a lot more factors go into a recruit's decision to attend a school than just what music is blaring during TO's.

Don’t take one point and thinking I’m making that the main point I’m saying it’s playing a small factor in the process of deciding if they are committing

Since we don't play again until a week from today, and I'm assuming we will pretty much be back a full strength then we should win our next two games without issue. So my question is, if we're 7-5 going into SEC play, how many SEC wins will we need to make The NCAA tournament and if we're on the bubble, will the committee factor in Rickea's early season injury?

Yea.............ur right.............we wouldnt want someone that will demand work and discipline on and off the court.
Currently I would take her for the "effort" required on the court............something we havent seen in some time.
Yea ur right. Try another former Lady Vol with a short and unimpressive coaching record. Who also struggles with losing key players to the portal. Definition of insanity.

And if you haven't seen effort in some time, try taking off the blinders. Strip and JP, and really everyone, has been busting tail.

I hate it when I agree with you glv
but I agree,

the players may be getting frustrated with the lack of growth from the staff,,,but they are not guilty of not trying,,,yes they may hit a wall and get frustrated in games with the "here we go again" syndrome. But to say they are not giving it their all is pure BS

Effort is part of the equation and a big one, but all the effort in the world won't help if the players don't know what is going on or what to do.

At the end of Warlick's tenure during one of her less than stellar press conferences she brought up the lack of effort. I watched that game and had just seen plenty of effort but the players were lost on the floor. Games require effort, but they also require strategy and that was clearly lacking for that game and generally most of hers.
