Kentucky lost again

None of Duke, KY, ISU, MSU, Alabama, Auburn, UNC etc. are major markets, or arguably even mid market teams. College basketball is made up of brands dedicated to basketball success, often because it’s much easier/cheaper to build a basketball team than a football team. As much as I dread your long-winded off-base response, it’s worth noting that these same brands (not in major or mid markets) will continue to spend money on coaches and players, and facilities to maintain the value of those brands. I await your misguided attempt at sharing your high school understanding of geography and Nielsen in defense of an unrelated graph or chart that strains to support your usual nonsense. Godspeed, Cliff Claven.
You’re right except for the fact that Detroit is the 14th largest media market in the country and Raleigh/Durham is #22. I’d say both of those are major, covering MSU, Duke, and UNC. The latter two plus UK are also national brands with large fan bases. There will continue to be parity across the board.

My point is simply that major markets (LA, NYC, Chicago, Atlanta) are not going to be the financial engine for successful college basketball programs. Detroit at 14 is not a major market. MSU isn’t even the top college among Detroit sports fans, and there are three pro teams. Similarly, Raleigh is a nothing market split between three ACC teams. Pimus was trying to imply that we were about to enter a time when “major market” college teams will thrive in super conferences. That isn’t happening. Major markets have other things going on than college basketball. Wealthy alumni funding NIL may distort outcomes. Media market size will not.

Actually Duke, UNC and Kentucky are larger markets from an NCAA perspective. They also have very strong brands plus their primary colors are blue. ISU, Auburn ,Bama and MSU you're correct all tiny markets and not strong basketball markets. Sometimes, the market is not just the immediate situation there are exceptions like UGA which, because of its proximity to Atlanta (and lack of relative competition within like 200 miles) gets big market benefits. The Alabama schools along with Arkansas, and Mississippi schools are all competing for basically the same market because they are all small states and close together. Knoxville has an excellent location. There are also other things that come into play. School colors/mascot. For basketball blue is the way to go. Not sure why it just is. Over 80% of NCAA basketball champs in my lifetime (50 years) have had blue in their colors. outside of Kansas and Arkansas all of them have come from at least midsize media markets.

People don't seem to link the fact that NIL is literally marketing. It is the right to make money off the marketing of your name. It is a lot easier to get marketing opportunities in Knoxville than a lot of other SEC markets because of a lot of factors. Less noise. Florida has a lot of competition instate, Texas schools also. As far as marketing only really UGA and UK are in position to compete and Vandy if they weren't Vandy. We also happen to be in the top 3 best school colors for marketing. Blue, Black and Orange. Or basketball at least. Football Red and Maroon tend to slide in there. Sounds crazy but look into it. State taxes will also play a big role going forward.

Perfect example the insane surprising Luka for AD trade. Luka got it super raw on one side. He lost over 140mil being traded from Dallas to LA. He also will get eaten alive in taxes. But, he will make all that money back and more from the marketing opportunities. AD is loving life. He is in Texas not paying state taxes and if his agent has any sense they will tie in the unibrow with some longhorn merc. Win-win situation. Open and AD ranch and have a big unibrow ornament on all his cars? He fits right in.

Do you think Kentucky has a "Tennessee lost again" thread on their message boards?

Nope I went and looked and not a one to be found.
Meh, they make threads about us all the time.
Just today they made one whining about us being #4. They relish in our defeats, and it eats them up when we do good. Believe this.
They have their 👀's on our program and our board, too.
They won't admit it, but they jelly of our success.

The #1 media market in the country for college basketball, based on TV ratings, is Louisville, and has been for over 20 years. UK, UL, IU all within 100 miles.

Market is deeper than just TV. Perfect example. As far as TV, Memphis is a bigger market than Knoxville. But as far as money Knoxville wins. Another really good example would be San Antonio vs Vegas. Vegas is a much better market for reasons outside of population and location because of what it is. Accessibility is a thing also.

Not sure where you got your numbers but Louisville is not even top 25 they are #48. the top 10 are all common sense places like NYC, LA, Chicago. There are not enough people in the whole state of Kentucky to compete with LA on anything ever. Trust me more people watch the Kentucky Derby in LA than in Louisville because math is undefeated. Louisville metro has a population of 1.3 mil less than 1/10 of LA (18mil). Maybe you meant per capita?

Couldn’t find anything overall more recent than 2019, but it topped the ESPN viewer ratings for 17 consecutive years pre-COVID. Men’s College Basketball on ESPN Up 15 Percent in the Regular Season; Women’s College Basketball Up Five Percent Across All Networks

Also topped NCAAT viewership in 2023. Knoxville up there, too. Louisville ranks as a top market to watch NCAA tournament

I think those links are in reference to market ratings, which is basically the percentage of viewers in that particular market that watch a particular event(s). It doesn't measure market size.

If one market size was 100,000 viewers and 25,000 of them watched a game, their market rating would be 25%. Another market with 1,000,000 viewers of which 100,000 watched a game would only have a 10% rating.

I lived in Chapel Hill for 4 years, and I still live in NC.
I have traveled to Southern Indiana all my life at the holidays, many of those trips when there was a UK/IU or Louisville/UK basketball game scheduled close in time.

Having watched the UNC/Duke rivalry up close, all I can say is that those fans can only dream of that game meaning as much to their fans as a UK/IU or UK/Louisville game means to theirs. Those Christmas matchups between UK and Louisville are electric.

right thats what I meant those are basically per capita rankings... so if 300k people are watching in Lousiville, that would be like 25% for LA that would be 2%. Always be careful when reading 'new' articles they use numbers without context to lie/mislead.

Couldn’t agree more. I have been to many, they are intense.
