Kim Caldwell (Rookie Coach of the Year-WBCA) is named Head Coach of Iconic Lady Vols WBB

Quick update: The inbound interest is very strong for the job this time. That’s the opposite of the last go round. As a courtesy to those coaches and their agents (who are the agents of other coaches) we’ll screen and interview people who aren’t in contention for the job. The list of three viable options may have expanded to four or five, but they are still focused on a primary target who they’ve been talking to for awhile. I think we’ll have a coach by the end of next week. This shouldn’t last long.

"This weekend or nothing"

So you'd rather White shut down the program than hire a homerun on Monday? Bad take.

There's no reason to rush the hire. Just get the right person. It's very easy to hire just anybody, and even some promising coaches. That's not what White or anyone wants. We need and want the RIGHT person and if it takes another week then it's worth the wait.

I agree. But I also understand why a lot of folks want this hire announced ASAP. We've got two truly amazing players who've reopened their recruitment, and it sure would make everyone feel better about the future if the new coach could quickly bring them back into the fold. And time is of the essence -- days, even hours sometimes, really matter sometimes -- so I can understand the angst.

We're also at risk of losing out on some terrific portal players if other programs' coaches get super insistent that kids make up their minds quickly. Some will do that, and even a few days of not having any contact with Tennessee could prove harmful to our chances with some of the portal players. Thing is, those players have learned that they don't need to take TOO long in making their decisions else they might get left out.

So, anyway, it's a gamble whether White hires quickly OR takes his time. We just have to hope he'll be able to get a great hire made in as short a time period as he can. He's a terrific AD so I'm confident he's working his tail off to get it done.

Who promised you immediate impact recruits/players?
and again
Who promised you immediate impact recruits/players?

🤣 Good for you for being logical and asking for evidence, Rooster1!

One poster last night claimed that not one but literally "all" of the people who supported a coaching change "promised" all of the following:

1. a home run hire
2. a top five coach
3. who will bring great players with them
4. someone with ff experience
5. that will move the program significantly quickly.

I asked to have one person cited who had made all five of those claims, and I said I knew that not all people had not "promised" "all five" of those things. The poster went off on me! 🤣 And in the process tacked on (without evidence) even more extravagant claims allegedly all "promised" by "all."

6. we would back up the brinks truck at Dawn’s house
7. our program would attract coaches who could just snap their fingers and get us to a ff

It would be nice, since you are a regular, if you would ask -- in the interest of truth -- who promised "all" seven of those things.

And in case there is even one person who did (which I doubted but conceded as a (doubtful) possibility that I was unaware of, on principle), please ask that poster for evidence of the literal claim itself: That "all" (every single one) of the people who supported a new coach said all 7 things.

Principles before personalities, of course, by reason. But maybe since you are regular and a fan of another program, the poster will listen to you.

And try not to write standard English lest you be falsely alleged on that basis to be working for DW. 🤣 (Even though it is bizarre to imagine a fan of Tennessee athletics taking that as a negative. They are giving their all for Tennessee!) Reveals a lot about the poster.

I disagree on the timing required (for recruits). One was a 2025 player, the other is a 2027. Those relationships will take time to build with the new staff, and fortunately there will be time. Ironically, those are the only two high school recruits Kellie will have had committed in a four year span.

As fans, we want the hire to happen soon.. like NOW soon, because we don’t like uncertainty, but we have to trust the process and know we are going to end up so much better than where we were.

I understand the portal concerns but not the concerns on the recruits. Weren't they 2025 and 2027? No rush there.

Portal is a concern because it's essentially the last chance to make sorely needed changes to the roster. But it's also worth considering more players will hit the portal as the coaching carousel... well... turns. If the coach is currently in the college ranks they can bring players with them. As coaches continue to move, even after the portal window closes, those players will have a short window to move and be available.

And who knows, maybe if the coach is from the professional ranks they won't sign the dotted line until they've talked to a couple athletes that aren't yet in the portal... is it really tampering if you're not under contract?😂 (I do not encourage cheating)

Despite fan impatience, this will probably be the shortest coaching search in UT history, or at least the shortest since the search that discovered Phil hiding in Johnny’s closet.

Exactly y I want us to pursue quickly. But Empty is a disgrace to our players. I won’t put up with such blatant disrespect to these girls who u publicly humiliate
Then why are you here? Nothing you think or feel is going to change what happened. Kellie had 5 years to prove herself. If you think differently rewatch the final play of the Carolina game where we left a wide open USC player hit a game winning 3 or the loss to MTSU. Tennessee deserves better.

I had Hammon/ Gottlieb interchangeable at 1a/1b, but the more I think about the less certain I am that she would be best coach for where we currently are. Kellie left the cupboard EMPTY. We need a quality coach and players at this point. That’s why I’ve switched my personal preference to Gottlieb.
Sure our players appreciate being called an empty cupboard.

the UNLV coach Lindy La Rocque
Man I like her but… doesn’t seem appropriate

What’s funny is how the Alex Simmons hype died down.

Like what would happen to Molly Miller or Marshall’s coach (Johnson I think) if she took a half decent conference job…

Tbh the Gardner Webb vs Utah game was pretty fun

Too bad Molly Miller can never get there

But to the point that UNLV way underperformed based on their “rank” and NET

Yes. I also think it’s important to remember that it normally takes time for freshmen to adjust to WCBB - especially in the SEC! While it would be GREAT if they recommitted to TN, I wouldn’t label Nyla and Finley as generational players.

What we’ve seen in this years class (from Juju, Maddy, Milaysia, Mikayla, Hannah, etc) is NOT common.

They didn’t announce a raise or extension

I assume they will try to extend her, but still assert if Danny White wants her, he gets her. USC isn’t going to compete with us financially. The flip side is what she tweeted is exactly what she should tweet. If she went radio silent, all the 🚨 would go off.

My thoughts too. Nothing very convincing

Completely disagree. For starters, Pat wasn’t a rising star, she literally created the program at a time when women’s basketball was essentially brand new. You can’t use her as a defense here. Second, TN has focused on “rising stars” too many times in too many programs and it hasn’t worked. In fact, Jeremy Pruitt called, he’d like an interview. Third, Big time programs at big time universities are not tailored made for on-the-job training.

If you’re going the “rising star” route, you might as well call Harper back and say it was an April fools joke gone bad.
She was 22 years old when she became Tennessee's head coach. She succeeded Margaret Hutson as Tennessee's head coach. She did develop the program into what it became a national leader in Women's athletics. However, at 22 years of age she certainly was not an established coach but she became the best in the Nation with her hard work and knowledge of the game.
By the way, Tennessee's first women's basketball team was in 1903 and played teams including Maryville College, Carson Newman, University of Chattanooga, and The Tennessee School for the Deaf and Dumb. I do not know who won those games.

Once again, you’re making a lot of sense.

Re radio silence, a somewhat similar example would be AD Danny not making a single tweet about WBB days after the NC St loss.
