Kirk Herbstreit Singles out Nico

While I somewhat agree there should probably be more detailed rules about NIL and using it as a recruiting tool has quickly got out of hand, Kirk should be ashamed for singling out a high school kid.

Say what you want about UT/Spyre, but leave the kid's name out of it.

In almost the same breath, he used Bryce Young as an example. BY had NIL deals in place in '21 worth $1 million before playing any significant snaps or becoming the starter. He played 13 snaps total that season, btw. Don't think for a second Saban didn't purposefully float that out there to bolster recruiting.

Kirk should be ashamed for being such a hypocrite and citing BY/Bama as a model while striking out against UT. I don't have any proof that BY knew this coming to Bama, but there's no way they haven't used it in recruiting since then. These kids know that kinda money is available. OSU is in the same boat as Bama and UT when it comes to NIL collectives. Him bashing one school while citing two others is ridiculous when all 3 are doing the EXACT SAME THING.

I'm not a huge fan of the Twitter mob, but I would be ok if Vol Twitter spent the next week roasting Herbie. He should be ashamed for singling out a kid and his opportunities on national TV and talking out of both sides of his mouth.

When NIL money became available everyone with a lick of sense knew it was going to change college football dramatically, and in many ways not for the better. And anyone who thought NIL would not be used as a recruiting tool was just either naive or cynically whistling through the graveyard.
Herbie does raise some interesting questions. When you basically pay a kid $8 mil, and he doesn’t work out what then? If not, already the NIL money will be tied to performance. Even if not directly, you will have to be on the team in good standing with the University, etc. It’s in the schools, or at least the football programs, best interest to keep the NIL money flowing and these boosters are expecting a bang for their buck. So, if not already, if you don’t perform, no one’s going to continue to pay you. This will all get worked through over time but look for these kids to have agents negotiating these deals and part of the money will be guaranteed and part won’t.
Before anyone says, “oh but the rules say the NIL money can’t be tied to performance!” Please, we all knew the SEC and other major conferences were going to become professional football leagues when all this started. All that’s left now is how the details of the contracts will be structured. Don’t worry the agents and lawyers representing each side will sort it out.

After watching his acting performance on the first college game day of the season a few years ago when he forced a cry in support of Black Lives Matter… I really thought I couldn’t possibly hate him anymore. But he’s continued to raise the bar over the last couple of years with the referencing of our Fanbase preventing a garbage hire etc. Now he’s complaining about us essentially using the fan base to radiate funds for kids like Nico. KH is just too damn dumb and conservative to realize this is good for the sport. NIL is giving teams not named bama, Ohio state, or uga a chance at elite talent. Spreading the elite talent around is good for 20+ programs on the outside looking in (us included) and it’s good for cfb in general. I wish espn would get some new talent with fresh ideas in there. FKH!!!
He is trying to push his own views on everyone else. and you are a horrible, horrible person if you don’t agree with him lol.. this is how it typically works.. but yeah, there are going to be teams that adapt and thrive (hopefully us).. and those who are going to have a harder time of it

Thanks. I know how capitalism works and personally enjoy the fruits of it. But the NIL system is flawed and not doing what it was designed to do, which is shift recruiting away from coaches to businesses. It’s not good for the sport and can potentially cause problems in the locker room like Herby stated. He’s right.
I don’t like what it’s doing any more than most. However, you have to play the game as the rules are established or you get left behind. Pretty simple really. I also agree with the comment about the blue bloods not liking it. It has taken away some of their advantages.

So, I am wondering, simply wondering, that if Nico Suave signed with the OSU Buckeyes vs the Volunteers, would ol' Kirk have gone out of his way to portray Nico in a negative light?.......

If Nico is getting 8 million, he better ****ing produce.

There is that. 5 star busts only thought they took heat before.

There will be 8 million new reasons to not fall on your face.

(But the consolation is, 8 million bucks. I could be consoled, personally. :))

I can imagine that very thing being said in the locker rooms by Nico’s teammates.

Can you imagine the vibe on the team the first time Nico throws 3 pics in a losing effort and drives away from the campus after the game in his Range Rover?

And that, my friends is why this money thing scares me.

Damn... Sorry I missed that blitzing linebacker... He really drove your head in the turf didn't he?

Lives in Nashville, Tennessee, constantly sh*ts on the Vols. Like bro, why are you so preoccupied on what’s going on 3 hours away in Knoxville?

For those pooping on NIL as a recruiting tool, can we play devil's advocate for a minute?

Let's get past our BVS for a minute and look at the other side of the coin.

FACT: Heup has obviously used Spyre to his advantage in recruiting, getting us in the conversation with some bigtime recruits, not just NICO. Previous odds suggest that the better recruits we get, the more likely we can compete for the SEC/CFP.

So, just humor me for one more minute please. IF that ever happens, and its a BIG IF, NIL as a recruiting tool may have been the most important catalyst, followed then by player development, scheme, etc.

Would you be ok with that? Or will you still be grumpy old Abe Simpson yelling at the clouds?

Herb never said a word about the Tx QB who left hs a yr early in order to take $1 million at O$U. I guess that was ok.

See how Herbie responded to Mayfield vs how he responded to Rashaan Gaulden and that will answer your question...
