Kirk Herbstreit Singles out Nico

While I somewhat agree there should probably be more detailed rules about NIL and using it as a recruiting tool has quickly got out of hand, Kirk should be ashamed for singling out a high school kid.

Say what you want about UT/Spyre, but leave the kid's name out of it.

In almost the same breath, he used Bryce Young as an example. BY had NIL deals in place in '21 worth $1 million before playing any significant snaps or becoming the starter. He played 13 snaps total that season, btw. Don't think for a second Saban didn't purposefully float that out there to bolster recruiting.

Kirk should be ashamed for being such a hypocrite and citing BY/Bama as a model while striking out against UT. I don't have any proof that BY knew this coming to Bama, but there's no way they haven't used it in recruiting since then. These kids know that kinda money is available. OSU is in the same boat as Bama and UT when it comes to NIL collectives. Him bashing one school while citing two others is ridiculous when all 3 are doing the EXACT SAME THING.

I'm not a huge fan of the Twitter mob, but I would be ok if Vol Twitter spent the next week roasting Herbie. He should be ashamed for singling out a kid and his opportunities on national TV and talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Saban literally made the statement that his qb had a million dollar deal before he started...

Saban Says QB Bryce Young is Approaching $1 million from NIL Deals – Sportico.com

Herbstreit is just a talking head who apparently doesnt understand research.

You can’t use Young as an example though, yes he hadn’t started, but he had been on campus. If this deal was announced next year, with Nico on campus, no one would bat an eye.

The problem is NIL is not supposed to be used to entice players to schools, it’s still a recruiting violation. Which is why collectives are in the crosshairs and I think things have slowed down overall.

Think Nico is only in the $1m range so far. Think you will have to ask Spyre where the other $7m is coming from. Young in the $2m-$4m range. Ask A&M what a #1 class costs.

Good point.

Nobody actually knows exactly what these deals are worth, how they're structured, etc., but the players, their family, and Spyre. I do reasonably know that nobody is getting the full amount up front from Spyre, based on direct correspondence with them.

Just another example of how Herbie is talking out of his arse and really doesn't know jack squat.

What he said is 100% accurate. What is going to happen when the 5 star guy making millions of dollars is terrible? It is a legit question. Vol fans are so damn sensitive about everything. lord.

He's renting a house in Cincinnati because that's where his son is a high school QB...Still has home in Franklin, TN and will use the rental in Cincinnati to see his son play football on Friday nights...

I wonder what incentives the school in Cinci offered over the pristine private schools in Nashville and Brentwood offered? Free tuition, perhaps?

Generally like him. But he's speaking in ignorance. Very few know the details of Nico's agreement. Making assumptions and then attack UT, Spyre, and Nico... is foolish and wrong.
TN should flourish under NIL. Spyre supposed to have highest cash flow of all collectives. Tell me we can’t buy a top 5 class?

There is no remedy. Everyone demanded these players get paid, ignoring the 50-100K in scholarship money they already were getting, and said the players were being treated like slaves. The truth is a D1 football player on scholarship is living a better life than anyone else on campus, but yet everyone said it’s not enough because a couple of low income kids couldn’t afford to go to the movies on the weekend. And this, what we have now, players who haven’t done a damn thing yet on a college football field getting millions in contract money was the solution??? Not a reasonable monthly stipend?? Sorry, may sound like the old guys screaming at traffic, but NIL is ruining the sport
That wasn't what opened the door to NIL. It was the US Supreme Court restoring rights to college athletes that are afforded to everyone else to earn money.

Don't like NIL, call Biden (but not during nap time) and your congressmen. It's going to take federal action to stop it.

Spyre has already said the money is guaranteed. It doesn't take any money off someone else's plate unless the donors stop donating. The money is managed on behalf of the player by OpenDorse. They then teach them how to manage it properly and handle the taxes and disclosure stuff. Nico will get it all if he stays in school for 4 years, participates in Spyre's required events, and doesn't get into trouble.

Are you more concerned that the locker room and fan base turns on him for poor performance? That already happened without NIL and will likely happen every time regardless of NIL. Just ask JG. Our sensitive fan base boo'd him loudly multiple times. It would only give everyone more things to say. Fans as a whole will turn on anyone if they suck.

What is going to happen when Nico balls out and get's UT in contention for the SECE/CFP? That's just as legitimate of a question as the opposite, and maybe more likely barring injury or getting into trouble, especially if you believe all the recruiting gurus. I'll tell you what I think will happen..... UT will keep recruiting, Spyre will grow, and they will get even bigger names coming.

What about Quinn Ewars? Why no mention by Herbie there? His beloved OSU paid that kid a $1 million NIL deal and he hadn't played a down.

Herbie's a hypocrite and he is cherry picking to support his misinformed argument. If he had left Nico out of his argument and not fluffed his beloved team or Bama, I would've moved on. But he chose to single out Nico and UT, in spite of his own alma mater doing the EXACT SAME THING.

What he says or doesn’t say……I could care less, doesn’t affect me.

In today’s NIL world (until it’s drastically changed) your going to have to really pony up to get on of those very top QB’s……and no one knows for sure how it’s going to pan out……but everyone (who can) is willing to do it. Teams like Tennessee might have to pony up a bit more….because their not Bama or OSU or whatever…..but they can and they did and it worked.

Now you just have to sign some other good prospects in case it doesn’t work. Which Tennessee is also doing…..Tayven Jackson, and I’m sure there will be more.

If you want to get where some of the top teams are you need some of the very best elite players. Some will work out, some will not. That’s just the chance you “have” to take……..it’s the same way with 3 stars as well……their just not getting paid millions.

I can imagine that very thing being said in the locker rooms by Nico’s teammates.

Can you imagine the vibe on the team the first time Nico throws 3 pics in a losing effort and drives away from the campus after the game in his Range Rover?

Probably the exact same thing they said when Peyton or Matt Stafford did it. You think players have less respect for players who made money under a system that’s getting them paid too, then they do kids who grew up rich and just had it given to them?

I love that we stepped up. First people complain for years that no one here spends money on football, now some are complaining that we do spend money on football. They also act like it's taking bread off their plate for it to happen. You can claim to be pro-Capitalism and then be anti-NIL. What if someone said they'd pay you 8 million dollars for doing your job but the government stepped in and told you no, you can't get that much money because you don't deserve it. I'd imagine you'd be pretty upset. That's what's been happening to college athletes for decades.
